Abstract

One of familiar green soybean, edamame is a vegetable that popularly chosen by the richest consumer. The reducing inorganic fertilizers can be realized gradually by transforming the farming from conventional to organic. Related to transformation, we observed the suitable combination of inorganic and organic fertilizers for the edamame growth and production. By a randomized block design, seven combinations of inorganic fertilizers (150 kg/ha Urea, 150 kg/ha SP-36, 100 kg/ha KCl) and organic fertilizers (compost) were applied. Three repeatations was adopted for each treatment and 30 plants per plot was used. The analysis of variance and Tukey HSD at 5% error were chosen. Based on the result, the combination of inorganic fertilizers and compost effect four plant growth and development variables such as the plant height, the number of leaves, the number of productive branches, and the time to produce 50% of a flower. The application of inorganic fertilizers at 50% and 75% combined with compost 10 t/ha increased the plant height, the number of productive branches, and the number of leaves. The number of seeded pods and the pod weight are not affected by all combinations of treatments.

Abstract

Boron (B) is a micronutrient that has an important role in increasing corn production. Application method B can have different effects on B uptake and crop yield. This study aims to analyze application method B which is more effective in increasing the growth and production of maize plants and to analyze the response of growth and production of Nasa-29, Bisi-2, and Bima-19 URI hybrid maize to application method B. The research was carried out in the experimental garden of Balitserial Bajeng. Gowa Regency. The study was designed using a split-plot design (RPT) with three replications. The main plots were varieties, namely Nasa-29, Bisi-2, and Bima-19 URI, while the subplots were application B through the soil and spraying through leaves. The results showed that the application of B through the soil and the leaves did not show a significant difference in all observed parameters, but the application of B through the soil showed better results. The Nasa-29 variety produced significantly better cob length and cob diameter when given B through the soil, while the Bisi-2 and Bima-19 URI varieties gave no different responses to the B application method for all parameters observed. The application method of B through the soil or the leaves on the three varieties tested did not show a significant difference in yield so the two methods could be an alternative for maize with similar soil conditions in Bajeng, Gowa Regency, and application during the dry season

Abstract

This Community Service Program (PKM) was conducted in collaboration with Majelis Taklim Nurhidayah, located in an urban area with relatively limited home yard space. Verticulture is an innovative cultivation system that utilizes vertical space, making it suitable for application in narrow urban areas. However, the partners’ knowledge and skills in vegetable cultivation using the verticulture system were still limited. The aim of this PKM activity was to improve the partners’ knowledge and skills in applying verticulture technology for vegetable cultivation in home yards. The methods included counseling, training/demonstration, mentoring, and evaluation and monitoring to assess the partners’ progress. The results showed that the program successfully enhanced the partners’ understanding and technical ability in verticulture-based vegetable cultivation, as well as their creativity in reusing plastic bottles and cups as planting containers. The partners expressed high appreciation for the PKM program, as reflected in their high level of satisfaction and their commitment to continue verticulture cultivation independently at home. The program has received full support to ensure its sustainability, especially in promoting vegetable cultivation through verticulture as an effort to enhance household food security.

Abstract

Cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) is a widely cultivated horticultural commodity in Indonesia, but its short postharvest shelf life presents limits marketability due to rapid quality deterioration during storage. This study evaluated the effects of packaging methods and storage temperatures on the shelf life and quality of cayenne pepper. A randomized complete block design with a two-factor factorial arrangement was employed. The first factor was packaging (no packaging, non-vacuum packaging, and vacuum packaging), and the second was storage temperature (5 °C ± 1 °C, 7 °C ± 1 °C, and 9 °C ± 1 °C). The results showed that the combination of vacuum packaging and storage at 5 °C yielded the best outcome, with the longest shelf life of up to 61.67 days, the lowest weight loss of 7.33%, and preserved cayenne pepper quality, as indicated by a vitamin C content of 1.44 mg/100 g, optimal deep red color (score 5.0), and firm texture (score 4.0). In contrast, peppers stored without packaging exhibited significant deterioration, primarily due to fungal infection by Fusarium sp. and Aspergillus sp. Overall, the findings demonstrate that vacuum packaging combined with low-temperature storage effectively extends the shelf life of cayenne pepper while preserving its physical, nutritional, and sensory attributes.
