Abstract

This study examined the interactional metadiscourse devices and the correlation with gender in personal essays. The data was taken from 20 essays, 10 essays from each respective genders which are published by Chicken Soup for the Soul in several editions. Tokens of interactional metadiscourse devices were obtained by using corpus software Antconc 3.5.9. The occurrence then underwent qualitative examination to sort only items used as interactional devices based on interactional metadiscourse taxonomy proposed by Hyland. This feature have been widely used to identify the interaction and meaning-making in many persuasive and academic writings as well as talks such as TED talks. To fill the gap, this study aimed to see the differences of interactional metadiscourse devices usage by women and men in personal essays. The result shows that women use more interactional discourse markers than men except for hedges category. In general, women use more interactional discourse in personal essays to express themselves and to let their readers feel being engaged in the story through emotive connections. Whereas, men write their stories more directly and attract the reader on the sequence of events.

Abstract

This study investigates the motives of using backronyms in the Indonesian Instagram discourse, focusing on the account @biasalahanakmuda, related to the backronyms’ communicative functions in social media interaction. The data consists of 137 backronymic items with 189 occurrences, collected from Instagram posts, captions, and stories posted between July 10, 2020 and April 27, 2026. The data were selected using purposive sampling based on three criteria: (1) the item is an existing lexical form or acronym-like expression, (2) a new invented expansion was assigned to it, and (3) the expansion resulted in a different meaning than the original form. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method supported by quantitative calculation. The analytical approach combined morphological analysis, especially Kridalaksana’s rules of acronym formation, with pragmatic and digital discourse analysis to examine how the backronyms are structurally formed and communicatively used in Instagram discourse.  Each backronymic item was interpreted in relation to its original form, its invented expansion, its Instagram context, and its pragmatic function. Data validity was enhanced by contextual verification with the aid of screenshots, and systematic coding ensured the reliability of analysis. The results show that backronyms are used for four general reasons: entertainment, audience engagement and group intimacy, evaluation and criticism, and identity and stance marking. Findings suggest that backronyms are not merely playful wordplay, but flexible resources for interaction, evaluation, and self-positioning in digital discourse.

Abstract

In the era of social media, public figures do not merely share their personal lives but also construct self-image through linguistic practices that reflect social and religious identities. One such practice is sharenting, the act of sharing content about children or family life accompanied by specific narratives. Linguistic practices on social media, particularly sharenting by public figures, serve as a means of constructing and expressing intertwined social and religious identities. This study explores how language choices in the image captions of sharenting content posted by Oki Setiana Dewi, a Muslim celebrity known as both a preacher and a mother, reflect the construction of a Muslim mother identity in digital spaces. The research employs a qualitative sociolinguistic approach to analyze the language choices in the captions. The analysis reveals that the use of religious diction, prayerful expressions, and spiritual narratives serves as a linguistic strategy to affirm the mother's role as a moral educator and guardian of Islamic values within the family. Language functions not only as a means of conveying information but also as a tool for establishing social relations, constructing a religious self-image, and expressing the speaker's ideological position. Linguistic practices on social media can be understood as a means of representing Islamic identity while simultaneously reinforcing social credibility as a Muslim female public figure.

Abstract

The implementation of Law No. 33 of 2014 on Halal Product Assurance (JPH) has transformed Indonesia's halal certification system and signaled a broader shift in the halal discourse from religious authority to state governance. This study aimed to investigate the themes and framing changes in news coverage of halal certification before and after the enactment of the JPH Law, and to examine how the media constructed the issue in two periods: 2010–2014 and 2015–2022. The study uses a Corpus-Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS) framework and the Text Linguistic Approach to Framing, and utilizes the online corpus tool Sketch Engine. The corpus consists of 1,131 halal-related news articles published by Republika.co.id from 2010 to 2022, totaling 470,404 tokens. Results show major changes both in thematic focus and media framing. The coverage between 2010 and 2014 focused on halal products, non-governmental actors (especially the Indonesian Ulema Council/MUI), and chemical substances; the coverage between 2015 and 2022 focused on government programs, state-affiliated actors, and religious issues. Regarding framing, halal certification was framed in terms of authority legitimation, consumer protection, and product quality in the earlier period, and in terms of mandatory compliance, government programs, and economic development in the latter. Overall, the implications of this study suggest that Indonesia’s transformation of its halal certification system is accompanied by a corresponding shift in halal discourse. The transfer of authority from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to the government has altered how halal is perceived and justified in public discourse. The media plays a key role in reflecting and reinforcing these shifting power dynamics among the state, religious leaders, and the marketplace.
