Abstract

Public discussions of global conflict turned out not only to be stages for information exchange but also as arenas for negotiating agreement, direction, evaluation, and participation. In podcast settings, guests typically serve as information providers, which may obscure the interpersonal significance of their grammatical choices given the predominance of declarative statements. This review assesses the effects of disruptions in the conventional relationship between grammatical mood and speech function. Drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), the analysis inspects 484 guest clauses from three English-language episodes of the YouTube series PowerfulJRE that address the Russia-Ukraine War. The data were coded for mood, speech function, congruence, and tenor, integrating frequency analysis with contextual interpretation. While declarative statements structure most of the discourse, 37 clauses (7.6%) deviate from expected mood-function correspondences. These incongruities are unevenly distributed. Instances include questions functioning as statements, statements serving as questions or commands, and commands realized as statements or questions. Contextual analysis shows that those changes facilitate confirmation-seeking, alignment-building, directive mitigation, rhetorical engagement, narrative presentation, and discourse organization. The result shows that the interpersonal meaning of podcast discourse does not emerge only from leading grammatical patterns but also from speakers’ purposeful use of the relationship between grammar and function. Incongruent mood therefore functions as a resource that enables primarily informational discourse to achieve greater flexibility and interactivity
