Abstract

This paper discusses the problems experienced by fishermen's wives in Sei Nagalawan Village who experience social bias. Social bias in the sense of a paradox situation, where women experience a paradoxical situation that is when their husbands go to sea to catch fish. Automatically the responsibilities in the family are held by their wives. Not only that, the fishermen's wives also regularly catch fish on the shore. However, until now these women were not considered fishermen which resulted in them not being able to get health insurance and access to borrow money from the Bank. Not only the role of fishing women in the social, economic and environmental fields in activities against poverty. The author combines the Marxist, Phenomenological and Ethnometodological perspectives in countering the phenomenon of discrimination in his position as a female fisherman amid the workload that can reach 18 hours per day. At the end of this paper the author describes how the strategies of fishing women in Sei Nagalawan Village fight poverty by actively catching fish on the shore, developing Kampung Nipah ecotourism through the Muara Maimbai Multipurpose Cooperative, developing MSMEs by selling mangrove (mangrove) raw materials and actively conducting struggle activities to fulfill the recognition of women as fishermen. Because, according to Law Number 7 of 2016 concerning Protection and Empowerment of Fishermen, Fish Cultivators and Salt Farmers, fishermen are a type of work related to fishing.

Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to look at the different forms of grammatical cohesions and why they were used in Barack Obama's and Donald Trump's inaugural addresses. This thesis employs a descriptive qualitative technique to describe the study's issues in Barrack Obama's and Donald Trump's inaugural addresses. Based on Halliday and Hasan's theory, the data are collected using library research techniques and grouped into the categories of grammatical cohesions as well as the reasons for employing them. After examining both Barrack Obama's and Donald Trump's inaugural speeches, it can be determined that Barrack Obama's inaugural speech has three types of grammatical cohesions while Donald Trump's inaugural speech has four types of grammatical cohesions. In both speeches, such categories are used to connect two things' meanings, to replace one item with another, to delete an item, and to relate the previous or following material.

Abstract

This study anchored in the field of Interlanguage Pragmatic (ILP). The approach taken is speech act based. The investigation focuses on realization of polite requests produced by Indonesian learners of Français langue étrangère (FLE) (henceforth abbreviated as ILF) and native speakers of French (henceforth abbreviated as NSF). The model used for the investigation is the Cross-Cultural Speech Act Realization Project (CCSARP) model formulated by Blum-Kulka et al. (1989), modified by Warga (2005) and Bae (2012). The model applied to the analysis of the data is based on three politeness systems of social relationship between speaker and addressee proposed by Scollon and Scollon (2001). Data was be collected by using Written Discourse Completion Test (WDCT). Six out of twelve request situations formulated by Reiter (2000) categorized into each politeness system were selected to be analyzed. The WDCT were tested to 20 ILF; 1 learner of Universitas Negeri Medan and 19 learners of Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The 20 participants are those who are certified of Diplôme d'études en langue française (DELF) of B2 level (advanced level). As the baseline data of the study, the e-mailed data of 20 NSF were also collected. The study found that there is a preference of Indonesian learners of FLE and native speaker of French to use Conventional Indirect strategy in their requests. This strategy, even realized in slightly different number of use, was highly used and considered to be the most polite request by the two groups.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the types of idiomatic expressions which are used by the students in their English essay and to describe on how far is their understanding of idiomatic expressions. In conducting this research, the writer applies qualitative approach by using content analysis to observe the types of idioms found in the students’ essays and doing an interview sessions in order to assess their understanding of idiomatic expressions.Based on the analysis, it is found that there are two types of idiomatic expressions found in the students’ essays. Both types are consisted of each one idiom for one student, those are A cup of tea categorized as Compound and Drop your jaw categorized as Verb + object/complement (and/or adverbial). Whilst, the results of their understanding of idiomatic expressions through interview session show that 6 of 7 were not able in passing the first facet of Six Facets of Understanding which is Explanation and categorized as the students do not understand about idiom, while 1 of 7 students could pass all facets and categorized as the only student who understands about idioms. The results show that actually the 4th semester of English Department students of Universitas Sumatera Utaraare not that familiar with idioms since five of seven of them did not use idiom in their essays and six of seven of them could not pass the facets of understanding.

Abstract

This research is to examine the use of Mood and Speech Function in Donald Trump's speech in response coronavirus pandemic. The rise of the coronavirus pandemic that occurred in almost all parts of the world in December 2019 - 2020 which has not yet ended, made America the largest country affected by the coronavirus pandemic after Italy. This thing has made Donald Trump speaking out in an effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus in America. The analysis of this research based on Eggins (2004:14) which includes Realization of Speech Function in mood system. This paper concerns on the analysis of Mood and Speech Function in Donald Trump’s speech in response coronavirus pandemic. This uses descriptive research method, in which the data are described systematically to get an accurate and factual result. The data used in this study are the clauses containing of grammatical mood and speech function used by Donald Trump’s speech. The finding describes that as a president want to give his response to the spread of this global pandemic. Where the response is in the form of information and opinions carried out in preventing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic to the citizens of America. It also to analyze how the mood and speech function realized in Donald Trump’s speech.

Abstract

This study attempts to investigate the incomplete linguistic features and schematic structure in university students’ narrative text. Qualitative content analysis method was utilized as the research design. The instrument of the research is the writing sheet. The data were taken from a narrative text written by 34 university students of second-year English education study program under the theme of folktales from North Sumatera. The data were analyzed by using the transitivity system to identify linguistic features in narrative text. The findings present that there are 4 different titles of folktales found in the data. From the data, it was commonly found that there is an incomplete part of the schematic structure of narrative text written by students namely complication, evaluation, resolution, and coda. In terms of linguistic features, it is discovered that most of the students have difficulties in differing the tense used covering the use of regular and irregular verbs, and the absence of dialogue. Then, the conclusion can be drawn that the incomplete schematic structure and linguistic features exist in university students’ narrative text. It is also suggested that students keep practicing to write and lecturers should devote higher attention in teaching this genre so that it is able to be comprehended and properly produced by students.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing the reality and relation in Antara news article related to law revision of Corruption Eradication Commission (Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi/KPK). The The reality is realized in experiential function that consists transitivity system while relation is revealed by logical function that consists of the status and its logico-semantic relation. The source of data of this study is Antara online news article. The data of this study is the clauses which are presented in the content of the news article. This study uses descriptive qualitative method by applying documentation technique and are analyzed by interactive model. After the data analyzed, it is found that the reality in Antara News realized in five of the six processes by having no occurence of behavioral process and the verbal one becomes its dominance. For its relation, both status of clause, either parataxis or hypotaxis are realized in Antara news article which are engaged in expansion and projection as the logico semantic relation. From the ten configurations of logical function, Antara News only has eight of them. The findings lead this research to  have one conclusion that that Antara News, as the news article which is funded by Government is definetely pro to the government policy since they believe that the revision is prominent to strengthen the sustainability of KPK as an independent constitution to eradict coruption in Indonesia.

Abstract

This research entitled Sign Element of International Food and Beverage Logos. This research analyses the sign elements of food and beverage logos and the interpretation of the sign. The company want to promote and inform their product by creating the logo. This research applies the semiotic theory by Charles Sanders Peirce to analyse the sign elements and its interpretation in the logos. This research use qualitative descriptive method in analysing the data. The data is 7 food and beverage logos which goes international. Those 7 food and beverage logos are McDonald’s, Starbucks, Domino’s, Pizza Hut, KFC, Coca-Cola, and Pepsi. The data source in this research were logo images that collected from the logo’s official website and Wikipedia. This research will analyse the icon, index, and symbol of the logos as the sign elements by using Peirce’s triadic theory. Then the interpretation of the sign will analyze by relating the representment, object and interpretant. The result of this research shows that there are 6 icons, 5 indexes, and 7 symbols sign used in 7 food and beverage logos. There is 1 logo that has no icon sign, 2 logos have no index sign, and all logos have a symbol sign. The meaning of the sign elements that found in the logos was represented by relating the representment, object, and interpretant.

Abstract

This article investigates the Interpersonal function in the speech by BTS at the 75th UN General Assembly. The objective is to find out the Mood types and to describe the Interpersonal function realized in BTS’ speech. Qualitative method is used in this study. The data were collected from the clauses in BTS’ speech at UNGA. Through this study, it is found that the Mood types in BTS’ speech at UNGA are Declarative mood (92,30%), Imperative mood (6,59%), and Interrogative mood (1,09%). The findings also revealed the dominant Mood types is Declarative which is used to share or to give information to the audience. For the Interpersonal function, it is realized through Mood structures which contains the Mood and Residue elements. Through Mood elements, it is found that there are Subject, Finite, and Mood Adjunct. While in Residue elements, there are Predicator, Complement, and Circumstantial Adjunct.

Abstract

This research deals with mental process were found in Donald Trumph’s speech. Mental process was used to express people’s feeling, thinking, perceiving shows other desire toward things in life. With these mental productions, humans can express their view, ideas, and a feeling to public through speech. As in Donald Trump’s speech on his presidential speech in addressing the outbreak of COVID-19 in his country. The language used in his speech determines the success of communication with the participant since language express speaker feeling, idea and desire. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The data were obtained from Donald Trumph’s speech and source of the data were the script of Donald Trump’s speech on March 11, 2020 about the coronavirus. The data were collected by documentary sheet. The data analysis used interactive model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. The findings show that 1) there were 39 utterances that contained of mental process were found in Donald Trumph’s speech, namely 17 (43.6%) for cognition, 11 (28.2%) for desiderative, 7 (17.9%) for affection, and 4 (10.3%) for perception. The highest type of mental process in Donald Trumph’s speech was cognition. It means that Trumph provided his insight to American people about the corona virus in order to make them to be calm in facing  the outbreak. It reflected the way of he logically thinks.
