Abstract

Background: Nursing is an interpersonal process that requires a deeper emotive-caring and communion-encounter with a higher degree of emotional synchrony. However, the social, cultural, ethical, economic, legal, and technological demands make it intangible and indefinable.Purpose: To identify and delineate the antecedents, defining attributes, and outcomes of emotional synchrony using both empirical and theoretical literature.Methods: This concept analysis used the Norris’ method of concept clarification. Electronic databases such as OVID, Web of Science, CINHAL, PsychInfo, SocIndex, PubMed, and ProQuest were used to search the keyword ‘emotional synchrony.’ There were fifty-two sources included in the inductive thematic analysis to identify, analyze, recognize, and report the themes generated from the corpus. The discussion is grounded in light of the Theory of Nursing as Caring to elucidate its utility within the parlance of nursing as caring.Results: The Model of Patterning Emotional Synchrony offers a new perspective toward a meaningful synchronous experience in the communion of beings that illuminates a soul-felt connectedness through the encounter, presence, and bond. The emotional synchrony’ is a phenomenon of caring integration where an intricate dance through a triadic-synchronistic rhythm of fusion, attunement, and effervescence contribute to the personhood, growth in reflection, and capacity to care. Also, as the emotional synchrony becomes an outward expression of caring, and as a manifestation of healing-caring-moment, the person embodies caring as a mode of being and views all persons as caring.Conclusion: The model explicates that it is the emotional synchrony where the person develops a soul-felt connection with others. It is with emotional synchrony that refuels the synergy and transcendence towards a communion of beings to embody Amo Ergo Sum—I love. Therefore, I am.

Abstract

Background: Nurses are required to maintain the standards of their practice through an informed range of Continuing Professional Education (CPE). However, there is a paucity of evidence exploring the relationship between motivation in pursuing CPE and competency among Indonesian nurses.Purpose: This descriptive correlational study describes the motivation among Indonesian nurses in pursuing CPE and its relationship to their competency outcome performance.Methods: Ninety-three staff nurses were chosen by convenience sampling, informed and gave consent for their voluntary participation in a selected hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia. Before the data collection, the researchers sought ethical clearance from the respective organizations. Eligible participants were those who have at least one-year hospital experience, naturally born Indonesian, and completed a degree in nursing. Data were collected using adapted, pilot-tested, translated, and validated sets of questionnaires.Results: The findings revealed that most of the nurses were 21–30 years old, married, permanent employees with 1–3 years’ working experience and had earned a degree in nursing. Indonesian nurses had moderate to high motivation in pursuing CPE and exemplified a fair to very good level of competency outcome performance. Results also indicated that among the motivation factors, expectancy was significantly associated with critical thinking (r=0.259, p< 0.012).Conclusion: Motivation among Indonesian nurses in pursuing CPE was at a moderate to high level. As Indonesia emerges as a promising country, leaders need to increase the motivation of nurses in their pursuit of CPE. Highly competent and well-prepared nurses can facilitate a caring and healing environment for patients and contribute to the overall performance of health-care organizations and society.

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 pandemic has become a severe health threat to the Philippines and around the world. At the early onset of the pandemic, it is imperative to measure the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) among healthy individuals to better understand the causes, transmission, and preventive measures. Purpose: This study aimed to identify the knowledge, attitude, and practice towards COVID-19 in a healthy Filipino population during the early onset of the pandemic outbreak.Methods: This cross-sectional rapid online and web-based survey was conducted among healthy Filipino population. A total of 1634 subjects participated via the Google survey link. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the respondents' profile characteristics and KAP scores. The One-Way ANOVA or independent sample t-test was used to measure KAP scores' differences when grouped according to respondents' profile characteristics. Pearson correlation was used to measure the relationship among the KAP scores. The data were all analyzed using the SPSS version 26.0. Results: The overall knowledge scores revealed 67.7%. Filipinos believed COVID-19 would finally be successfully controlled and confident that the Philippines can win the battle against the virus through preventive practices. KAP scores showed significant differences with age, sex (p<0.000), and place of residence (p<0.000), occupation (p<0.000), and marital status (p<0.000). A significant positive low correlation between knowledge and practice (r=0.076, p<0.01), attitude and practice (r=0.100, p<0.01).Conclusion: Albeit a low knowledge of COVID-19, healthy Filipino populations had a positive attitude and compliant with the preventive measures. This study hopes to contribute to the growing corpus of literature on COVID-19 to provide evidence-based information towards health promotion, illness prevention, and control of possible virus' spread.

Abstract

Background: The quality of management has become a problem and significant issue of the late decade in Indonesia's professional nursing practice. By implementing total quality management (TQM), the organization would identify a health organization system's performance to improve patient satisfaction and patient safety for independent nursing practice services. Objective: This study aimed to assess the quality of independent nursing practice in Indonesia based on TQM indicators.Methods: This study employed a sequential explanatory mixed methods design. Participants were 105 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of independent nursing practices who answered a TQM survey using The Malcolm Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence (MBCfPE). The quantitative responses were analyzed using SmartPLS version 3.0. For qualitative data, selected six participants from total respondents were interviewed to explore the participants' understanding of TQM. All the responses were transcribed and uploaded using NVIVO ver. 11 for thematic analysis.Results: Leadership positively influenced strategic planning, customer attention, assessment analysis, and information management (focusing on personnel process management and efficiency) (p <0.001). In addition, process management indicated a positive influence on performance results (p <0.001). Interview transcriptions concentrated on the following themes that emerged, such as quality focus, service focus, human resource focus, performance result, leadership, service system design, strategic planning, and information system.Conclusion: TQM with the adaptation of MBCfPE criteria improves the organization's performance and serves as a strategic component in assessing and implementing sustainability change. The findings of this study can be used by CEOs of independent nursing practices for continuous improvement. In addition, the results serve as a basis for the ministry of health for accreditation to ensure the high quality of health care services.

Abstract

Background: Interprofessional education (IPE) has been recognized globally as critical for preparing health professionals to deliver collaborative and patient-centered care. In the Philippines, however, IPE remains in its early stages of development, with limited standardization across institutions and scarce research focused on faculty perceptions. Faculty play a vital role in implementing and sustaining IPE initiatives, making their perspectives essential to understanding the current landscape and barriers to IPE integration.Purpose: This study aimed to assess the perceptions of IPE among faculty members teaching in allied health programs in the Philippines and to identify factors influencing their attitudes toward interprofessional collaboration.Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, surveying 328 faculty members from accredited Philippine institutions through a self-administered online questionnaire. Participants were selected using convenience sampling. The Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS) was used to measure perceptions, with excellent internal reliability (Cronbach’s α=0.984). Statistical analyses, including independent t-tests and one-way ANOVA, were conducted using SPSS version 27 after checking for normality (Shapiro-Wilk test) and homogeneity of variance (Levene’s test).Results: Faculty members demonstrated generally positive perceptions of IPE, particularly in valuing collaboration and recognizing the need for cooperation. No significant differences were found in overall perception scores based on age, gender, region, or years of teaching experience in the academe and years of clinical or professional practice in their respective health fields. However, statistically significant differences were observed across programs for perceived need for cooperation (p=0.000) and perception of actual cooperation (p=0.001), indicating a gap between intent and practice.Conclusion: While allied health faculty in the Philippines express supportive attitudes toward IPE, actual interprofessional collaboration remains limited. These findings highlight the need for faculty development initiatives, institution-wide policy frameworks, and longitudinal research to bridge the gap between perception and practice. Strengthening IPE implementation will be crucial to preparing future healthcare professionals for collaborative roles in improving patient outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a significant concern in healthcare settings, particularly among critically ill patients who require mechanical ventilation. Nurses play a vital role in preventing VAP through their knowledge and implementation of evidence-based practices. However, there exists a notable gap in the research regarding nurses’ knowledge of preventing VAP to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.Purpose: This study aimed to assess nurses’ knowledge of preventing VAP among critically ill patients using the ventilator bundle checklist.Methods: This study used a one-group pretest-posttest design to test the change in the nurses’ knowledge scores on VAP working in two government hospitals in Buraidah, Al Qassim Region, Saudi Arabia. The study covered 250 purposively and conveniently sampled nurses from intensive care units. Data collection was performed in three phases: pre-test, VAP educational program, and post-test. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires on nurses’ socio-demographics, a 20-item self-made survey about the knowledge of VAP and its prevention and the adapted ventilator bundle checklist. The collected data were entered, prepared, and analyzed using SPSS version 25.0. Relevant ethical issues were strictly considered.Results: The results showed that during the pre-test, correct responses were accounted for but showed low scores in the following areas: general knowledge of VAP (27.6%), factors associated with VAP (36%), international guidelines for prevention (20.8%), and nurses’ roles in prevention (16.4%). However, in the post-test, there was a remarkable increase in the knowledge scores in the same categories (95.2%) on general knowledge, on factors associated with VAP (74.8%), on international guidelines (73.6%) and on nurses’ roles in prevention (61.6%). The program significantly improved overall VAP knowledge and knowledge in specific areas like general VAP, associated factors, international guidelines, and nurses’ roles in prevention (p<0.000).Conclusion: A pre-test revealed low baseline knowledge across all four areas assessed: general VAP knowledge, factors associated with VAP, international VAP prevention guidelines, and nurses’ roles in VAP prevention. However, post-test scores markedly increased in all areas, indicating the educational program’s effectiveness. Hence, the findings suggest that educational intervention focused on VAP screening and bundle protocols could be beneficial to address the gap in knowledge on VAP.
