Abstract

Abstract. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum tissues that commonly occurs in pregnant women, especially during the second trimester, due to hormonal changes affecting the immune response to plaque. The prevalence of gingivitis among pregnant women in Indonesia reaches 74%, with 80% of cases attributed to poor oral hygiene. Lack of awareness in maintaining oral hygiene among pregnant women increases the risk of gingivitis, which can lead to complications such as preterm birth, low birth weight (LBW), and abortion. This study aims to determine the relationship between oral hygiene and the incidence of gingivitis in second-trimester pregnant women at Klinik Pratama Hikmah, Bandung City, in 2025. This research used a quantitative correlational design with secondary data from medical records. The population and sample consisted of 35 second-trimester pregnant women diagnosed with gingivitis, selected through total sampling. Data were collected using observation sheets based on the Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S) and Gingival Index (GI), then analyzed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed that most respondents had poor oral hygiene (88.6%) and experienced moderate (62.9%) to severe (25.7%) gingivitis. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between oral hygiene and gingivitis incidence with a p-value = 0.000 (p < 0.05).
