Abstract

Mobile devices are widely utilized today in language classrooms across the globe, and experts have studied this phenomenon. This study examines the use of mobile devices and the 4 Pics 1 Word application (app) to support English language learning. This study seeks to investigate students’ perceptions of 4 Pics 1 Word app utilized in vocabulary class, specifically in terms of its benefits. Using a qualitative case study design, 40 EFL students attending a junior high school in Medan participated in this study. The data were collected through questionnaires containing ten statements in which the answer options are strongly agreed, agreed, neutral, disagreed, and strongly disagree; and semi-structured interview, which was done with five students who voluntarily participated. The findings indicate that students viewed the use of 4 Pics 1 Word in vocabulary class positively. It is believed that the application is efficient and well-designed, with an exciting and enjoyable learning environment. Enhanced learning motivation and interest, increased vocabulary mastery, and a more active and enjoyable learning process are among the benefits mentioned by the students.

Abstract

Keeping a teaching journal is one way that can be done to assist in the improvement of professional development. One approach that is becoming increasingly popular nowadays. Using a qualitative case study methodology, this research aims to explore the English teachers' perspectives on journal writing as a way of professional development. The study enlisted the participation of 21 English teachers to complete a demographic survey. In accordance with the aims of the study, participants were recruited using a technique of purposive sampling. In this case, the researcher selected the participant based on their experience in writing a teaching journal. The researcher utilized a questionnaire and an interview as instruments for data collection. The purpose of the questionnaire is to collect demographic information as well as respondents' perceptions about the benefit of keeping a teaching journal for professional development. The interview was then conducted to obtain further information regarding the participants' responses to the questionnaire. Five English teachers voluntarily participated in the interview process and in analyzing data, thematic content analysis was used in this study. The outcomes of the study revealed that English teachers got a range of benefits from strengthening their professional development, including encouraging a positive attitude toward teaching, enhancing English teachers' critical thinking, and improving teaching quality. This study suggested that keeping a teaching journal has a profound influence on English teacher development.

Abstract

In both first and second language acquisition environments, speaking is one of the four macro skills that must be cultivated as a way of effective communication. This study was aimed to explore the postgraduate students' perception of speaking skills and to examine the most dominant problems faced by the postgraduate students in speaking. As a result of this issue, a qualitative research design was developed as an action study in a regular course. Therefore, the subjects of this research were 10 postgraduate students in the first semester at the State Islamic University of North Sumatera. The data were collected by a questionnaire which applied in Google form. The researcher shared the Google form link with the students via WhatsApp message. In analyzing data, the researcher analyzed the data based on each question and answer of the respondent. The researcher analyzed the data one by one to get the point of the research. After that, the whole data are discussed using the theory and continued by concluding. The result shows that it was found that the post-graduate students faced many problems in speaking in the target language, such, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and speaking. There were also other problems such as lack of confidence and did not have any brave to speak in the second language.

Abstract

Technology has aided in the development of learning media with a variety of media creations as media for students to be more engaged in learning to use a laptop or smartphone with Android capability by installing the application in question. In this study, the use of games or gamification applications in learning English, specifically digital scrabble games, is discussed. This study attempts to investigate the use of scrabble to support students' motivation and vocabulary acquisition based on teachers' perspectives. The subjects for this research were 12 (twelve) English teachers of North Sumatera. In conducting this research, the researcher used the case study methodology. The data were collected through an open questionnaire requiring a lengthy response from the respondent and a closed questionnaire with an alternative answer decided by the questionnaire's creator, namely yes or no. The results showed that, in accordance with the teachers' perceptions, utilizing scrabble can motivate students to study because they become interested, feel challenged while using it, and want to keep playing. Due to the students' ability to learn and assimilate new words through scrabble, their vocabulary acquisition also enhanced.
