Abstract

This kind of study was a qualitative content analysis. The purpose of this study was to examine errors that happened during students' written interactions on the Whatsapp application. The data were acquired using purposeful sampling since the researcher identified EFL university students who actively communicated via WhatsApp in written English. The researcher used documentation to collect data for this investigation. To ensure the validity of the data, the researcher took a screenshot of the student's writing that was typed in the Whatsapp group, and interviewed five respondents via Whatsapp voice calls that were recorded using a voice recorder on a smartphone, then transcribed and assessed qualitatively. The researcher collected data in a methodical manner and carried out several data analysis operations like collecting the errors, classifying them, providing and evaluation and explaining the errors and the factors. The researcher concluded from the research findings that both the source language (L1) and the target language (L2) have an effect on students' interlanguage writing output. The study discovered that the native language had an effect on literal translation by utilizing Indonesian grammatical patterns, Indonesian acronyms, omitting plural marker-s, and omitting BE. Meanwhile, the target language's effect was detected by the insertion of auxiliary verbs and the generalization of the past tense –ed.

Abstract

Academic writing is currently a worldwide concern. A plethora of studies on academic writing difficulties in higher education has been conducted. With the advancement of technology, the challenges of academic writing can be alleviated by using Quillbot, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered digital tool. However, research on using Quillbot in post-graduate academic writing classrooms is still limited, and little is known about how students perceive it. This study investigates how post-graduate students view Quillbot as a digital tool for English academic writing. This study employed a qualitative case study design by involving 20 post-graduate students majoring in English education who were already familiar with Quillbot to participate. In investigating the participants' perspectives, a questionnaire and semi-structured interview were used as the instruments for data collection. The findings reveal that the post-graduate students in this study responded positively to using Quillbot to assist them in improving the quality of their writing. Furthermore, the use of Quillbot was found to have three benefits: enhancing students' positive attitudes toward writing, providing a variety of user-friendly writing features, and aiding students' language development. This study implies that AI-powered technology like Quillbot in writing, particularly in academic writing, has a significant role in creating high-quality writing for students.

Abstract

ABSTRACTAlthough many studies have been conducted to investigate how graduate students navigate the publication endeavor as a graduation requirement, a scant number have explicitly focused on how Master's students manage to do so through their participation in a community of practice (CoP). This study set out to bridge this gap by examining the transformation experienced by Indonesian Master's students of English education in terms of their knowledge and practice in writing for scholarly publication after joining a writing group. This study employed a qualitative, descriptive case study approach. Data were collected through a questionnaire, in-depth interviews, and artifact analysis from 15 students and analyzed using Content Analysis. Findings indicate that after joining the writing group, the students reported increased skills in writing scholarly articles and more knowledge of the publication process. This study suggests the establishment of communities of writing practice in graduate programs to assist students in addressing the mounting pressure of scholarly publication, either as degree conferment or career preparation and advancement. How to Cite: Fithriani, R., Rahman Hz, B.I., Kurniati, E.Y.
