Abstract

World Englishes (WE) recognize diverse English varieties shaped by local cultures, challenging Standard English dominance and empowering global speakers. In Indonesia, pesantren integrates English and Arabic into education, creating Pesantren English, a localized form reflecting cultural values. This aligns with the WE perspective, granting students legitimacy as English speakers and fostering hybrid identities. Narrative inquiry is suitable to explore this linguistic and cultural dynamic. This research explores Pesantren English as a local variety in the expanding circle, examining its role in shaping learners’ identities and cultural expressions. It also aims to guide educators in adopting culturally sensitive teaching methods and recognizing the influence of language teaching on identity construction. The study used narrative inquiry to explore Bilal’s (pseudonym) perception of Pesantren English and its impact on his identity. Data were collected through interviews and a learning journal in June 2022, then analyzed by coding and identifying themes to draw conclusions. Bilal, a student from a pesantren in Tasikmalaya, Indonesia, initially preferred Arabic but grew passionate about English after exposure to Western media. The pesantren enforced strict use of English and Arabic, which helped Bilal improve his language skills through both academic and extracurricular activities. While he valued Standard English and criticized local accents, Bilal viewed English as a tool to spread Islamic values globally without adopting Western culture. He plans to further his studies in English and religion, aiming to use both to promote Islam worldwide.

This study aims to analyze "Improving English Reading Skills through the Audiovisual Text Media" among first-semester students of the English Language and Culture Study Program at Sumbawa University of Technology. This research is a quantitative study using a pre-experimental design approach (nondesign). The design consists of a one-group pretest-posttest design with a single predetermined group. The research sample comprises 10 students. The research instrument used to collect data is a test, which includes a pretest and a posttest. The results of this study indicate that the use of the Audiovisual Text Media can improve students' reading ability. This is supported by the analysis using the Paired Test, where the t-value is -42.052 with a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000. Comparing this with the tabulated significance value (0.05), it is evident that there is a difference between the pretest and posttest scores regarding improving English reading skills through the audiovisual text media.

Abstract

This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of research on social welfare in multicultural societies, examining publication trends, key themes, and collaborative networks. Using data from Scopus and analyzed through VOSviewer, the study identifies major research clusters centered on migration, cultural diversity, government policies, and socioeconomic factors. Findings indicate a shift in scholarly focus from economic disparities and human rights to emerging concerns around digital transformation, social integration, and inclusive welfare policies. The study also highlights regional disparities in research contributions, with Western scholars dominating the discourse while emerging research networks develop in Asia and other regions. Additionally, gaps in comparative welfare studies, the role of non-state actors, and the impact of digital technologies on welfare provision are identified as future research priorities. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners seeking to enhance welfare policies in diverse and evolving social contexts.
