Abstract

Political speech has been an interesting social phenomenon to study. The languageinterplays within political discourse discover more than what is said. This studyanalyzes Benjamin Netanyahu speech in the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) 2013 under the discussion of nuclear Iran. The study focuses on therepresentation of nuclear Iran based on Benjamin’s perspective and uncovers thepower strata between Iran and Israel. The study is conducted under a qualitativeapproach by using the three stages model of Critical Discourse Analysis andSystemic Functional grammar approach. The result of the study indicates thatnuclear Iran has the capability to contribute several impacts in the energy sector,peace and resolution process worldwide, and terrorism sphere in the Middle East.Benjamin’s speech also mirrors the power strata between Iran and Israel. Morespecifically, Benjamin implicitly acknowledges Iran as a powerful party within thediscourse.

Abstract

Issues regarding attitudes and perceptions about English and its cultural politics have been widely and significantly reported in literature. As an international language, English signifies multiple and complex benefits and challenges. This paper aims to extend the discussion by interrogating students’ attitudes and unpack their views towards promises of English in Indonesian Islamic higher education (HE) settings. Participants in this study were undergraduate English Literature students who had engaged with the introductory principles of (Critical) Applied Linguistics (CPL). Data was collected through questionnaires (with closed and open-ended questions) from 58 participants, 19 males and 39 females, and semi-structured interviews with four students. The findings elucidated different views on varieties of English as students showed a quite moderate view of varieties of English from non-inner circle countries instead of treating them as something deficient. Dependency on native speakers’ English variety, however, seems to be negotiated in that the participants view intelligibility as more important in communication than, for instance, correctness. Moreover, students in the present study view speaking English with a local accent as something acceptable. Although not absolutely certain, they still presume that having competence in English can offer better hope in their future.

Abstract

This study delves into Joe Biden's use of the personal pronouns "I" and "We" in his presidential campaign speeches, analyzed through the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). By examining how Biden presents himself and the nation, the research uncovers the narratives crafted to promote a sense of unity and leadership. The SFL framework provides a detailed description of the linguistic choices that shape Biden's self-representation and his depiction of America, highlighting the strategies used to connect with voters on both personal and national levels. The results reveal Biden's portrayal of America, his vision for the future, and the specific policies he advocates. Such portrayals are expressed through six processes of Ideational metafunction: Material, Mental, Behavioral, Verbal, Existential, and Relational. Relational process is the highest process found in the data. It implies Biden’s inclusivity as common American people and his effort to resonate with a diverse audience. In short, this analysis enhances the understanding of the rhetorical tools utilized in political discourse to create impactful narratives.

Abstract

This research aims to examine how Indonesian netizens of X consider physical bullying in wider scope, which is social media (cyber-world) through X. Researchers analyze traditional bullying that occurs in Indonesia but is used as discourse on social media (cyber). Therefore a netizen attitude assessment system appears in comments and posts, especially those related to affect, assessment, and appreciation. The method used in this research is Qualitative research under Discourse Analysis methods, with the social media data source "X" with the keywords #bullying and #bullyingcilacap, while the data analyzed is in the form of words or lexis related to the appraisal system. The findings of this research are in the form of a negative judgment attitude followed by an attitude of affect and appreciation in posts about bullying cases that occurred in Indonesia. This shows that the writer or netizen is very angry and worried about the immoral act of bullying. However, a form of positive judgment attitude was also found where netizens sympathized and cared about justice for victims of bullying.
