Abstract

Background. Physical inactivity has been known as a global public health problem and also becomes an important risk factor for Non-Communicable Disease (NCD). Jump rope training is an example of aerobic exercise that is easily done with simple tools. It also increases pulmonary function and reduces oxidative stress. The objective of the study assessing the effects of jump rope training on oxidative stress and pulmonary function in male medical students of Diponegoro University. Method. This is a quasi-experimental study with 42 male medical students as subjects. The subjects were chosen purposively and divided into two groups using a matched subject design. The treatment group was given jump rope training for 6 weeks, each week consists of three-session exercises. The control group didn’t perform jump rope training. The pulmonary functions measured are Vital Capacity (VC), Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) and Forced expired volume in one second (FEV1) using spirometry, while the oxidative stress level used malondialdehyde (MDA) parameters measured using the thiobarbituric reactive substances method (TBARS). Paired t-test, independent t-test, Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, and Spearman test were used for statistical analysis. Results. There was a significant difference in spirometry test and MDA level in the jump rope training group compared to the control with p < 0.001. Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed that MDA levels were not correlated with pulmonary function (p > 0.05). Conclusion. Jump rope training may decline oxidative stress and improve pulmonary function in male medical students of Diponegoro University.

Abstract

Background: Aging results in a decrease in various body functions, one of them is in the aspect of mobility. Increasing age can reduce the range of motion of the joints. One of the easy physical activities for the elderly is foot exercise and hydrotherapy (warm water soaks) in order to minimize the decrease in ROM. Aim : To compare the combination of foot exercises with hydrotherapy and without hydrotherapy on active ROM of the lower extremities in the elderly. Methods : This research is an experimental study with parallel 3 groups pre and post-test design. The research subjects were 21 elderly people in RW 04 Karang Wetan, West Ungaran, Semarang Regency. Active ROM of the lower extremity was measured before and after intervention using a goniometer. analyzing the data of this study using the Paired T test and One Way ANOVA method. Results: There was no significant increase in the active ROM of the lower extremities in the control group, p=0.114 (p>0.05). The range of active motion of the lower extremities (pre test to post test) in the combination treatment group of foot exercise and hydrotherapy p < 0.001 (p < 0.05) and the treatment group of foot exercise p = 0.001 (p < 0.05) experienced a significant increase . However, there was no significant difference in the increase in active ROM of the lower extremities in the combination treatment group with foot exercises and hydrotherapy, p=1.00 (p<0.05) and the foot exercise treatment group. Conclusion:Physical activity in the form of a combination of foot exercises with hydrotherapy and without hydrotherapy performed 3 times a week for 5 weeks has been shown to increase the active ROM of the lower extremities in the elderly. However, there was no significant difference between the two which was more effective in increasing the active ROM of the lower extremities in the elderly.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Elderly are susceptible to health problems due to decreased organ function such as increased blood sugar levels that are at risk for diabetes mellitus, so proper management is needed with physical activity. Foot exercise and hydrotherapy can be an alternative to physical activity for elderly to lower blood sugar levels. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the combination of foot exercise with and without hydrotherapy on blood sugar levels in the elderly. Methods: Experimental study with parallel 3 groups pre and post-test design. Research subjects were 21 elderly, divided into control group (n=7), combination of foot exercises and hydrotherapy intervention group (n=7), and foot exercise intervention group (n=7). The intervention was done 3 times a week for 5 weeks. Blood sugar levels were measured using POCT.Results: There is no significant decrease in blood sugar levels from control group (p>0.05). There is significant decrease in blood sugar levels from foot exercise and hydrotherapy intervention group (p<0.05) and foot exercise intervention group (p<0.05). The difference in blood sugar levels showed significant results between foot exercise and hydrotherapy intervention group and control group (p=0.000) and between foot exercise intervention group and control group (p=0.004). There is no significant differences in blood sugar levels between foot exercise and hydrotherapy intervention group and foot exercise intervention group (p=0.112).Conclusion: Both foot exercise and hydrotherapy are effective in lowering blood sugar levels in the elderly.
