The writer takes 40 students as the sample and they are devided into two groups by using random sampling. The first group was VIII-1 as Experimental class which is taught by implementing Roundtable technique. While the second group is VIII-2 as control class which is taught by using conventional method. Oral test is used as the instrument of collecting the data. This test consists of two types, namely pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The calculation shows t-observed that is 2.307 is higher than t-table that is 1.686 at the level significance (p: 0.05) with the degree of freedom (df) 38. It means that Ha is accepted, therefore it is concluded that Roundtable technique significantly affect on students’mastery of writing a descriptive text of eleventh grade students at SMP Swasta GKPI Pamen. It is suggested for the students of English department as source of valuable knowledge and information when conducting a research related to the study. Abstract

This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach to examine Conversational Implicatures found in "The Silence of the Lambs" Movie using Grice's Cooperative Principle theory (1975). The objective of the study is to identify the prevalent type of Conversational Implicature and characterize its pattern of usage. The results indicate that Generalized Conversational Implicature (GCI) accounts for 42.2% of the total implicatures, while Particularized Conversational Implicature (PCI) represents 57.8%. Notably, Particularized Conversational Implicature emerges as the dominant type. The patterns identified within Generalized Conversational Implicature (GCI) are (1) conveying additional messages without needing to explain in detail or explicitly,(2) responses that do not require additional explanation, and (3) brief and succinct responses. However, Particularized Conversational Implicature patterns generated are (1) based on the specific context of the situation, (2) based on specific knowledge of the case and the context of the conversation, (3) use of cryptic language and allusions, (4) manipulation of hearing sympathy or understanding by sharing personal desires,(5) the psychological dynamics between the characters,(6) use of indirect questions.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe (1) what are the text flow structures of the of students' English speech performance and (2) what is the non-text flow structure of the students' English speech performance in the Seminar on ELT course. Methods: This study was observed using an anthropolinguistic approach using analytical parameters, namely interconnection, valuability, and sustainability. A qualitative paradigm with an ethnographic model is used in this study by applying twelve steps both in interview and observation methods. Findings: The text flow structure of the of students' English speech performance has three important patterns, namely the introduction, body, and conclusion. It has the smallest elements called substructure. The substructure, there are greeting, question, and declarative sentences found in introduction. The substructure, there are transitional speech, guess, question, declarative, and explanatory sentences found in closing, and greeting closing found in closing part. In the non-text flow structure of the students' English speech performance found co-text and context elements, they are cultural, social, situational, and ideological contexts. In co-text found kinesics and prosemics. Conclusions: The text flow structure is the basic framework of a text in forming a coherent whole. The text and non-text flow structure is related to the text framework which is arranged regularly from beginning to end starting with the introduction into the conclusion. Both the text and non-text flow structures are very necessary to improve students’ ability to communicate well and creatively.

Abstract

Vocabulary is a crucial component of language learning because it enables learners to understand texts, express ideas, and communicate effectively in both academic and real-life contexts. In the Indonesian educational setting, however, many students continue to experience difficulties in mastering vocabulary. Traditional teaching methods that rely heavily on memorization, limited practice, and lack of interactive activities often fail to engage learners, resulting in low achievement and limited speaking proficiency. This gap highlights the need for more effective instructional strategies that can support vocabulary development in meaningful and engaging ways. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the Mind Mapping technique on students’ vocabulary achievement at SMA Yayasan Rakyat Pancur Batu. The study employed a quasi-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test model. The participants consisted of 20 twelfth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. A vocabulary test of 25 multiple-choice questions was administered before and after the treatment. During the intervention, students were taught using the Mind Mapping strategy, which allowed them to organize words visually into categories to improve retention and understanding. Data analysis included mean comparison, normality and homogeneity testing, and the t-test. The findings indicated that students’ mean vocabulary score improved from 40.25 in the pre-test to 82.5 in the post-test. The t-test calculation showed that the obtained t-value (5.54) exceeded the t-table value (2.09) at the 5% significance level, confirming that the treatment had a significant effect. In conclusion, the Mind Mapping technique proved to be an effective strategy to enhance vocabulary mastery. It encouraged active learning, improved retention, and created a more engaging classroom atmosphere, thereby supporting better English proficiency and communication skills.
