Abstract

This study aimed to find the structure of the theoretical model that can illustrate the achievements of Indonesian students in the field of physics. This study also examines the variables that directly or indirectly influence the physics achievement of Indonesian students. The data in this study are data of TIMSS 2011 on physics test with population involved were 4572 Indonesian students grade 8. This research used path analysis from LISREL 8.30. The physics achievement model of Indonesian students based on TIMSS 2011 results are as follows: (1) physics achievement is directly influenced by self-confidence, interest in learning, and students attitudes toward the importance of physics; (2) physics achievement indirectly influenced by students involvement in physics learning indicated from their interest and confidence in physics learning; (3) attitudes toward the importance of physics have an indirectly positive impact on physics achievement. Students self-confidence in physics learning has a stronger direct influence on their achievements than their interest in physics.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to validate the test items of science achievement, which were used as a test at Pancasakti Science Competition, in order to obtain enough valid test items with the Rasch model application. Validation model used in this research is Messick validity covering aspects such as (1) content, (2) substantive, (3) structural, (4) external and (5) consequential. To achieve these objectives, this study investigates the quality of the items that include matching items, Person-Items Folder, Person/Item Folder, Information Function Tests, Person Fit Statistic, Collapsed Deviance, Casewise Deviance, Hosmer-Lemeshow, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, unidimensional, invariance, separation and DIF. The test was given in the form of multiple choice as many as 40 items consisting of 15 items of physics, 10 items of chemistry, and 15 items of chemistry. The participants were 85 biology students with the test time allocation of 60 minutes. Item analysis was conducted by using R 3:12 Program, eRm package version 0.15-6. The study results showed that the test items of science achievement were proven valid by the application of Rasch Model. The test items have met construct validity according to Messick (1996) which includes such aspects: (1) content, (2) substantive, (3) Structural, (4) External and (5) consequential.

Abstract

This research intended to reveal the determinant factors which could explain Indonesian students’ environmental awareness based on the 2015 PISA; also, to find out the influence of Science Proficiency to Indonesian students’ environmental awareness based on PISA 2015. The data were obtained from the 2015 PISA database in which there were 6513 Indonesian students participated in the survey. This research employed the Path Analysis continued to the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) employing the LISREL 8.30. The research results indicated that the environmental awareness of 15-old Indonesian students directly influenced positively by: (1) students’ enjoyment of learning science equal to 0.41; (2) students’ self-efficacy in science equal to 0.16 (3) students’ instrumental motivation equal to 0.15 ; (4) Inquiry-based instruction in science lesson equal to 0.14; (5) students’ science proficiency equal to 0.11; and (6) students’ epistemic belief equal to 0.04. The higher the socio-economic status of the students, the lower the environmental awareness. A respectable correlation of >0,5 was obtained from the relationship between those 6 variables and environmental awareness.

Abstract

The emergence of Differential Item Functioning (DIF) indicates an external bias in an item. This study aims to identify items at scientific literacy skills with integrated science (SLiSIS) test that experience DIF based on gender. Moreover, it is analyzed the emergence of DIF, especially related to the test construct measured, and concluded on how far the validity of the SLiSIS test from the construct validity of consequential type. The study was conducted with a quantitative approach by using a survey or non-experimental methods. The samples of this study were the responses of the SLiSIS test taken from 310 eleventh-grade high school students in the science program from SMA 2 and SMA 3 Tegal. The DIF analysis technique used Wald Test with the Rasch model. From the findings, eight items contained DIF in a 95 % level of trust. In 99 % level of trust, three items contained DIF, items 1, 6, and 38 or 7%. The DIF is caused by differences in test-takers ability following the measured construct, so it is not a test bias. Thus, the emergence of DIF on SLiSIS test items does not threaten the construct validity of the consequential type.
