Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to determine how the impact of students' intelligence levels on writing skills (writing) in English subjects. This research is a case study research with the research subjects of seventh-grade students of one of the Islamic junior high school in Nganjuk Regency with a total of 30 students which are divided into two groups by the researcher they are a group of students with high intelligence scores and students with low intelligence scores. The researcher analyzed the IQ test data conducted by the school several months earlier (less than one year of data accuracy period) and the students' writing test results. The results of the analysis of the data obtained show that students with high intelligence scores on average have good writing skills seen from the five writing aspects used as benchmarks in this study, namely content, organization, grammar, mechanics, and vocabulary. The group of students with high intelligence scores had an average writing score of 85.33 while the group of students with low intelligence scores had an average writing score of 75.07.

Abstract

This article reports the results of a research dealing with: (1) the students’ writing skill which is taught using picture series, (2) the students’ writing skill which is taught using comic strips, (3) whether comic strips is more effective than picture series in teaching writing to the seventh grade students of a state islamic junior high school in Nganjuk. The research method was experimental method. The subjects of the research were the seventh grade students. There were two classes taken in this research, one as the experimental class and the another one as the control class. Each class consisted of 30 students. The experimental class was taught using comic strips and the control class was taught using picture series. The data were obtained by conducting a test after providing eigth meetings as the treatment for each class. The researcher analyzed the data using t-test to find whether comic strips was more effective than picture series in teaching writing. Based on the data analysis, the research findings are: (1) the students who were taught using picture series had low writing skill, (2) the students who were taught using comic strips had good writing skill, (3) the comic strips is more effective than picture series to teach writing for the seventh grade students of junior high school. It was showed from the computation of the t-test analysis at the significant level of 5% (sig = 0.05). The calculation showed that t value of 5.825 with the significant level of less than 0.05 is 0.000.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui produk pengembangan media comic strips sebagai media pembelajaran writing berbasis kearifan lokal untuk siswa sekolah menengah pertama.Strip komik (Comic Strips) merupaka media pembelajaran yang dapat digunakan untuk berbagai macam skill, salah satunya adalah Writing. Strip Komik berbahasa inggris banyak sekali dibuat oleh para native atau orang-orang asli pengguna Bahasa Inggris sehingga bahasa yang digunakan cenderung kompleks dan sulit dipahami oleh Siswa yang masih dalam proses belajar. Strip komik yang dalam pembelajaran Writing digunakan untuk menstimulasi Siswa agar dapat mempelajari grammar (tata bahasa), mechanics (cara penulisan), content (pengembangan ide/ isi), organization (urutan/ kronologi ide), dan vocabulary (penggunaan kata yang efektif).Dalam penelitian pengembangan ini, peneliti mencoba memenuhi kekurangan-kekurangan yang belum dapat dipenuhi oleh media strip komik yang sudah ada dengan menggunakan metode penelitian Research and Development (R n D). Ada sepuluh langkah yang dilakukan dalam penelitian RnD ini berdasarkan pada teori Borg dan Gall (1989: 783-795). Pada tahap penelitian pendahuluan dan pengumpulan informasi peneliti melakukan observasi dan dan wawancara terhaap guru dan siswa untu mengungkap kebutuhan guru dan siswa dalam kegiatan writing. Selain itu peneliti juga melakukan kajian terhadap hasil penelitian terdahulu yang pernah dilakukan terkait dengan penggunaan comic strips sebagai media pembelajaran writing. Dari hasil observasi dan wawancara maka didapat sebuah perencanaan untuk mengembangkan comic strips berbasis kearifan lokal sebagao media pembelajaran writing untuk siswa sekolah menengah pertama. Dalam tahap pengembangan, peneliti membuat konsep comic strips yang kemudian diilustrasikan ke dalam panel-panel yag berisi tokoh dan dialog. Setelah draft selesai maka diakukan penilaian atau validasi oleh ahli materi dan ahli media. Adapun hasil uji kelas kecil menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara nilai pre-test dan post-test yang ditujukkan dari nilai signifikan 0.00< 0.05 maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan comic strips bebasis kearifan local ini efektif untuk pembelajaran writing di sekolah menengah pertama.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find students difficulties if getting main idea from a text and to know the students’ perspective of reading activity to find main idea. The subject of this research was the third semester students of English Department of STKIP PGRI Nganjuk which was consisted of 27 students. For getting the data, the researcher used three techniques they were reading test, interview, and providing questionnaire. As the results of the test there were 9 students who had score in range of 65-75 with the total questions of 20 and the rest had score in range of 40-64. Based on the interview, the students’ problems were about having low interest of reading, having low vocabulary mastery, the sentence structure which longer than what they usually read or construct, having poor reading strategy, and getting confused of grammatical structure used in the text. Based on the results of the questionnaire can be concluded that the third semester of English Department of STKIIP PGRI Nganjuk still had difficulties of getting main idea from a passage because mostly they did not understand with the vocabulary used in text so they could not determine the main idea of the passage.

Abstract

The present paper aims to know whether there is any influence of using local wisdom-based comic strips in teaching writing for the junior high school students. Local wisdom-based comic strips is a developed comic strips that contain local wisdom as the knowledge of the local people which is inherited hereditary. Creating the local wisdom-based comic strips and applying them as media to teach writing aims to facilitate the students and teacher to do the teaching and learning process. Besides, they also can create the education which can provide the meaning for local people’s life. In other words education can be the spirit which colors the local people’s life. The research design is quasi experimental with two group as experimental group and control group which uses t-test to analyze the data and compares the results. The researcher used a test in form of writing test as the instrument of getting the data. There were 70 students which were taken as sample from a junior high school in Nganjuk which are separated into two groups of experimental and control. The research result was shown by the mean score of experimental class is 78.19. It also can be seen that the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is 0.000 which means that the value of Sig. (2-tailed) < 0.05. So the alternatives hypothesis (Ha) is accepted while the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. The conclusion is the use of local wisdom-based comic strips has a significant influence to the students writing skill.
