Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of speech acts in the text and to analyze different perspectives on the meaning “very sorry” between the United States of America and the Peoples Republic of China. The object of the study is a letter of saying sorry from the U.S. Ambassador for China Joseph Prueher to the Foreign Minister of the PRC Tang Jiaxuan on the incident in Hainan Island which caused the death of the Chinese’s pilot and the custody of the aircraft crew and the surveillance aircraft relating the emergency landing without any prior permission. The researcher employed the speech acts theory proposed by Searle (1979) as cited by Wardhaugh (2006) to analyze speech acts types and to obtain the dominant type and the implication used in the text. The strategies of apology by Cohen and Olshtain (1986) as cited by Zhang (2001) were also employed. This study is descriptive qualitative research. The result showed the biggest percentages of the types were expressive and assertive. The researcher also found the different perspectives on the meaning of “very sorry” between the US and the PRC which led into misunderstanding influenced by the culture. This research benefits the English language learners to understand the meaning of locutions which they hear and to acknowledge the culture influences society perspectives in understanding the meaning especially for non-English speakers.DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/llt.2017.200102

Abstract

In linguistic field, transitivity is widely used to analyze newspaper, short stories, novels or other discourses to construe the ideology of the discourses. This research aims to analyze the transitivity processes in abstracts. The data are obtained from abstract papers submitted in 2nd LLTC held by ELESP Sanata Dharma University. The data are analyzed by using qualitative and quantitative methods since the research provides the descriptive analysis based on the percentage of occurrence of the findings. There are five abstracts chosen randomly from twenty linguistics abstracts. The results show that (1) there are six transitivity processes analyzed;  material  (62.4%),  relational  (24.7%),  verbal  (5.4%),  mental  (4.3%),  behavior (3.2%), existential (1.1%) and (2) there thirteen circumstantial elements with the highest percentage is place (54.4%), and the least are frequency, commutative, and matter (1.3% for each). This research can be the initial state of conducting a research on transitivity process and circumstantial elements in abstracts. Keywords: transitivity, abstract

Abstract

Abstract In accordance with SKL BIPA Permendikbud number 27 of 2017, BIPA students in beginner level are expected to be able to use Indonesian language to self introducing and fulfillment of concrete daily needs with simple way, such as asking direction, order food, shopping in the market, and ect. That abality can be mastered by students with varying fluency on every students. That things is influenced by lack of language structure of the learner and there is interference mother tongue to Indonesian language. Teacher need prepare task activities that support students to achieve expected abilities and help students more fluent Indonesian language. One of task form that can be given is daily journal writing. This research is qualitative descriptive research. Reseacher use participant observation method. Reseacher also documenting students daily journal. Subject in this research is BIPA students in the beginner level in Language Institute of Sanata Dharma University. The purpose of this research is to describe daily journal assignment form and what are the assignment step using daily journal for BIPA learner in the beginner level. Based on the research result, the form of daily journal assignment are two activities, that is outdoor activity and in door activity. Both of activities covers authentic assignment. The assignment can be done with three activities, that is (1) daily journal prewriting activity, (2) daily journal writing process, and (3) post writing daily journal.  Key word: BIPA, beginner level, authentic task, daily journal Abstrak Sesuai dengan SKL BIPA Permendikbud nomor 27 tahun 2017, pemelajar BIPA tingkat pemula diharapkan mampu menggunakan bahasa Indonesia untuk perkenalkan diri dan pemenuhan kebutuhan konkret sehari-hari dengan cara sederhana, seperti bertanya arah, memesan makanan, berbelanja di pasar, dan sebagainya. Kemampuan tersebut dapat dikuasai oleh pemelajar dengan kelancaran yang berbeda-beda pada setiap pemelajar. Hal tersebut dipengaruhi oleh masih minimnya pengetahuan struktur kebahasaan pemelajar dan adanya interferensi bahasa ibu terhadap bahasa Indonesia. Pengajar perlu menyiapkan aktivitas-aktivitas tugas yang mendukung pemelajar untuk mencapai kemampuan yang diharapkan dan membantu pemelajar semakin lancar berbahasa Indonesia. Salah satu bentuk tugas yang dapat diberikan adalah penulisan jurnal harian. Penelitian ini termasuk jenis penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Peneliti menggunakan metode observasi partisipan. Peneliti juga mendokumentasi hasil tulisan jurnal harian pemelajar. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah pemelajar BIPA tingkat pemula di Lembaga Bahasa Universitas Sanata Dharma. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan bentuk penugasan jurnal harian dan bagaimana langkah penugasan dengan jurnal harian bagi pemelajar BIPA tingkat pemula. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, tugas penulisan jurnal harian berbentuk dua aktivitas, yaitu aktivitas di luar kelas dan di dalam kelas. Kedua aktivitas tersebut mencakup tugas-tugas bersifat autentik. Penugasannya dapat dilakukan dengan langkah (1) aktivitas pramenulis jurnal harian (2) proses menulis jurnal harian dan (3) pascamenulis jurnal harian. Kata kunci: BIPA, tingkat pemula, tugas autentik, jurnal harian

Abstract

The disruption and development of technology has rapidly transformed the educational system these days. Its practicality has driven students to equip themselves with technological devices and software, particularly those with Artificial-intelligence. This study aimed at identifying students’ perspective on the implementation of Artificial-Intelligence Powered App as Learning Aid in Improving Learning Autonomy. Specifically, this study identified whether or not the use of Artificial-Intelligence Powered App as Learning Aid could change learners’ perspective on autonomous learning and improve their learning autonomy. Further, the perspective being investigated is related to learners perspective on their role in fostering autonomy as well as learners’ perspective toward the teachers’ role. The researchers conducted the study by following a collaborative action research. The data of the study were collected using questionnaires and semi structured interview. Then, the results of the questionnaires were analyzed quantitatively and the results of the interview were analyzed qualitatively. This study finds out that incorporating artificial intelligence powered apps has successfully changed learners’ perspective on autonomous learning. Besides, the use of artificial intelligence powered app also works positively in fostering learners’ autonomy. Since this study was conducted using action research method, the result of the study cannot be generalized to a larger population. Thus, an experimental study that apply inferential statistics analysis is needed to support the results of the study. HIGHLIGHTS: One of the challenges in fostering learner autonomy is making them understand of the need to be autonomous. Learners initially thought that teachers should spoon-feed them the learning materials. AI powered apps like Mondly has the potential to help students understand their roles and teacher’s roles during learning by providing them features that encourage autonomous learning activities, such as planning, monitoring and evaluating their learning.
