Abstract

Linguistically, the more complex clause a sentence implements, themore complex the grammar it embed. A simple clause, as opposingthe complex clause, consists of a subject and a verb with optionalobject or complement. However, Biber et.al. (2011) has provedthat complexity of a clause attached in a sentence fails to indicatethe complexity of a sentence in writing composition. Furthermore,they indicated the stage of the acquisition of complexity features ofwriting, including that of in L2 of English. This present study aimsat investigating how the frequency of complex sentence produced byGanesha University of Education students different from that of byprofessional academic writer, to assess students’ writing ability. Thecomplexity features of writing comprise: 1) fnite dependent clausetypes; 2) non-fnite dependent clause; and 3) dependent phrase types(non-clausal). Theoretically, the implication of the study aims to beneftthe development of teaching writing through authentic assessmentprocess. Providing assessment with diagnostic feedback on areasof needed improvement through authentic assessment in Englishlanguage teaching has become a solution due to its signifcance forlanguage learner (Brown & Abeyvikrama, 2010: 254). Corpus-basedanalysis is conducted allowing great number of data to be analyzed togenerate more reliable generalization (Baker, 2010). The corpus dataand the frequency of sentence complexity as represented by selectedfeatures of (Biber et al., 2011), are annotated using CLAWS part-of-Made Wahyu Mahendra, An Authentic Assessment....46.speech tagger hosted by Ucrel, and are calculated by Ant.Conc 3.2.4corpus software. The fndings projects surprisingly occurrence inwhich undergraduate students utilizes clausal sentence rather thanphrasal sentences. It becomes indication that the students are in theearly developmental stage of complexity in writing.

Abstract

For foreign language learners, especially in university, academic writing is essential. Students are required to analyse, compare, and inform through academic writing. Moreover, when they reach the end of their study, they should write a thesis as part of a requirement to graduate. Thus, thesis writing is a major challenge for students. Halliday and Hassan as cited in Hinkel (2001) emphasise that academic writing should achieve cohesiveness to make it well-constructed and understandable. Transition signal is one of prominent cohesive devices that should be taken into account in academic writing. This study aims to identify students’ problems and tendency in using transition signals in academic writing. The data are gained from university students’ academic writing product which is built in a form of corpus. The data are then analysed by using corpus software (ant conc.3.2.4). Its implication on English Language Teaching (ELT) concerning the teaching of transition signals will also be addressed

Abstract

The study aimed at exploring the phonological interference made by Pendalungan students in EFL reading, particularly in vowel phonemes. Pendalungan is an assimilation of two majority ethnics in Eastern Java; Java and Madura. Due to the unique characteristics of the language used by this group of community, it is assumed that the errors made by EFL Pendhalungan students might show different patterns as those found in either Javanese and Madurese students. To answer the problem of the research, the descriptive qualitative design was employed. There were eight students who belonged to the Pendalungan community, from a private university in East Java were taken as respondents. The secondary instruments used was an oral test of reading an English text. The finding showed that there were 12 incorrecty pronounced vowels; /ɪ, aʊ, ɔ:, e, Ʌ, əʊ, aɪ, ɪə, ə, ɒ, eɪ, æ/. The finding was analyzed based on the types of phonological interference, namely sound addition, sound omission, and sound replacement. The first two types have the least cases of two for each, while the last type has the most. Furthermore,the phonological interference emerged in the finding is somehow related to the nature of both languages, Javanese and Madurese. Inaccuracy mostly occurs because students pronounce the words as they are written.

Abstract

Transition signals are the essential elements to achieve a well-structured text. The ideas in the text need to connect to each other. It will be difficult for the reader to understand the sequence if the ideas are simply just exposed by the writer without being related to each other. Students’ competency and ability in English academic writing overviewed from their competence in constructing sentences. Therefore, this research aimed to find out the use of transition signals and their accuracy in students’ community service report. The research used a descriptive quantitative method. The data were taken from students’ community service report written by the seventh semester English literature students of Foreign Languages Study Program of Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar. The finding of this research showed that the total number of transition signals used by the students in their community service report were 303 and classified into eight types of transition signals. Transition signals to introduce sequence and logically order ideas was mostly used and transition signals to emphasize ideas was least used by the students. From the whole types of transition signals, the average usage accuracy was above 60%.

Abstract

The knowledge of cultivation and the methods of treating and solving pest problems naturally without neglecting the local culture has been an inseparable aspect of Balinese agricultural life, which is known for its irrigation system called subak. This study aims to examine agricultural scripture named Usada Wisada Pari from two perspectives. First, this study examines the types of pests and its countermeasure. Secondly, it is important to study the lexicon form of these pests. This study shows that the types of rice pests in the Usada Wisada Pari text are categorized into two types, namely animals and plants. The countermeasure consists of natural ritual elements from plants and incantations. Furthermore, this research also shows that all kinds of plague and agricultural pests, along with ways to overcome them, reflect the very strong Shivaistic teachings. All kinds of diseases, countermeasures and prevention are described as the authority of Lord Shiva as the god of destruction in the Hindu concept. It can be concluded that the scripture of Usada Wisada Pari is a text that provides knowledge about rice pest antidotes in an environmentally friendly and holistic manner because it involves natural and religious elements. This study is expected to contribute both to academics or future researchers as well as to the public. It is hoped that academics and researchers can use this present study as a source and expand as well as deepen the object of study based on ethnoagriculture. Meanwhile, the general public can increase their knowledge regarding alternative management of agricultural epidemics in synergy with nature and local wisdom.

Abstract

Abstract The importance of writing has become a primary concern in teaching English as a foreign language. The skill of writing enables learners to generate ideas into certain organisation and awareness once the process of writing is undertaken. From writing, learners are also expected to be able to construct and use the language more accurately because they have enough time to think compared to have an oral activity. However, such an ideal situation can hardly be manifested due to particular problems faced by learners. This present study aims at investigating the struggling points of writing construction done by students. There were fourteen students who were purposefully selected as the subject of this study. In order to gather the supporting data, the researcher employs document study and direct observation. This study is expected to give contribution to help teachers confirming common problems faced by students during learning writing. Nevertheless, it also contributes to other prospective studies which are on the same interest with this present one. Keywords : Assessing Writing, Writing Problems, Writing Construction
