Abstract

This paper aims to find what types of metaphor are there in the novel Anak Semua Bangsa and the strategies for translating those metaphors employed by the translator in translating Anak Semua Bangsa into Child of All Nations. In order to do so, the researchers employed Dunn’s (2015) types of metaphors for data classification and Shi’s (2014) strategies of trans- lating metaphors. The data were taken from the novel Anak Semua Bangsa for the source lan- guage data and Child of All Nations for the translation version. This study finds that there are three types of metaphors found in Anak Semua Bangsa novel, i.e. modulated (62.67%), source-target (29.33%), and interpretive (8.00%). The translator of Anak Semua Bangsa was likely to employ either using literal translation or changing the metaphor to meaning strate- gies for translating metaphors. In conclusion, regardless for what purposes the translation is, the translation product should preserve above all the meaning rather than the forms. Keywords: translation, metaphor, Anak Semua Bangsa, child of all nations

Abstract

This article examines swear word translation in Eka Kurniawan's Indonesian novel, Seperti Dendam, and its English version, Vengeance. The study analyzes swearing expressions and translation strategies using a qualitative approach. Data from both novels reveals seventeen swear words across eight themes. Swear words are classified into four function types and a mixed function. The translator employed five main strategies, maintaining function and theme being the most common. The findings show the translator aimed to preserve the original function and theme while adapting to the target text's style. Indonesian swear words share similarities with English counterparts in function and theme.

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive research aims to explore the different meanings that can be derived from the name of a study program, i.e., English for Business and Professional Communication, using a syntactic approach. The syntactic approach employed was the X-bar theory rules to analyze the possibilities of the structural meaning. The results show three possible structural interpretations of the program’s name: (i) an English language program with two specific objectives, namely business and professional communication, (ii) a program with two specializations, namely English language for business purposes and professional communication, and (iii) an English language program with a specific purpose in the field of communication, which is divided into two sub-fields, namely business communication and professional communication. Thus, the English for Business and Professional Communication study program name is an ambiguous construction with three possible structural readings.

Abstract

Literary works refer to books and writings with distinctive reason, emotion, and imagination characteristics. Poetry is a literary work that is a means for a poet to express the contents of his/her thoughts and feelings by prioritizing the aesthetics of language that is structured in such a way. This study analyzes poetry as a literary work that is transferred from the source language (SL) to the target language (TL), or what is known as poetry translation. This study aims to analyze M. Aan Mansyur’s translation of the poem “A Dirge” by Christina Rossetti. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method because the data is compared and described in writing and content analysis. The data sources are a translation of the poem “Sebuah Ratapan” by M. Aan Mansyur and the original poem in English. This analysis results from Newmark's translation method and Lefevere's poetry translation strategy, showing that free and rhymed poetry translation strategies dominate poetry translation texts.

Abstract

Generally, to finish a bachelor’s degree in Indonesia, undergraduate students are required to compose a research article as a form of academic writing. One of the distinctive features of academic writing is explicitness, which shows the connection between the texts by using conjunctions to help the reader understand how the various parts of the text are related and how well they understand the ideas being presented. This paper aimed to explore the conjunction usage in the research articles written by nine students from three higher educational institutions in West Borneo. Using a content analysis sheet, this qualitative research was done by interpreting the context of the conjunctions used in students’ research articles and evaluating their compatibility with each purpose of the conjunctions by adopting the misuse pattern of conjunctions theory. The research procedure consisted of coding each sentence that contained a conjunction, categorizing the conjunctions based on the types, analyzing the conjunction, and classifying the conjunctions found into two categories, which are appropriate and inappropriate. The findings showed that the most frequent conjunctions used by the students are “because they tend to add information in order to elaborate on the ideas of the sentences." The result shows that the students employed a range of conjunction types, encompassing coordinating, subordinating, correlative, and compound conjunctions. Nevertheless, in their thesis articles, students predominantly favored the use of coordinating conjunctions, with "and" emerging as the most frequently utilized conjunction. Regarding the appropriateness of conjunction usage in the articles, there are 34 conjunctions misused out of 737 conjunctions. However, it is considered appropriate since the conjunctions appropriately used are much more dominant than the misuse committed.
