Abstract

Car Toons Compilation is an animated film by the YouTube channel First Toons which contains a compilation of episodes of Car Toons, including A Tow Truck, A Water Truck, and A Tractor. Car Toons tells a different story in each episode but still includes car elements. This study aims to discuss the semiotic understanding of the animated film by using Peirce's semiotic theory, especially icons, indexes, and symbols. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with descriptive analysis, which emphasizes the process of semiosis with the meaning of the relationship between signs or representamen in the elements of animated films and their benefits for children. The study results show that the animated films A Tow Truck, A Water Truck, and A Tractor have imaginary icons, namely visuals based on similarities to reality. The Tow Truck's indexicality as a saviour for a breaking car has a symbol of a towing tool that has a tip like a fishing hook on the back of the truck. The indexicality of the Water Truck is used to save alive whales even though they are on land. The blue object is a symbol of water. Tractor truck indexicality that agricultural land can be planted due to tractor services, its symbolism is that the animation of land with plants is agricultural land. Based on this discussion, the meaning of representamen provides benefits for children in the form of understanding the types of trucks and their uses.

The story tells about rising sea level in Fiji, and it is suitable to the reality occurring in Fiji. Rising sea level reaches the land by the sea, hence the people living there must be relocated. Sea Changes is analyzed using ecocritical approach and semiotic theory. This study aims to reveal the meaning of visual appearance which goes to the values containing in the story. The analysis reveals four ecocritical elements by Scott Slovic, these are where the humans are, where the humans live, how the humans treat the environment, and how humans treat other humans. The four questions are answered using semiotic theory by Charles Sanders Peirce. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with descriptive analysis, which emphasizes the process of semiosis with the meaning of the relationship between signs or representamen in the pictorial book and the values for children. The results of the study are that Sea Change gives some value for children, these are about where humans properly live, and how humans properly treat the environment and other humans.

Abstract

Representations of womanhood and patriarchy are presented in the novel Tarian Bumi by Oka Rusmini. Stuart Hall's representation theory is used as a theoretical framework. This research explores female figures who experience gender injustice and how patriarchal domination is deeply rooted in Balinese society. By analyzing the female characters, this article finds that women in Tarian Bumi often face various forms of gender injustice. Women experience limited freedom and life choices, derogatory judgments based on caste and physical appearance, and the burden of traditional gender roles that require them to sacrifice personal well-being to meet social expectations. Rigid social norms and sanctions for breaking norms strengthen patriarchal domination, making women who try to violate these norms get severe social sanctions. This article reveals how the novel provides an overview of social realities experienced by Balinese women, criticizing and challenging unfair patriarchal norms. Tarian Bumi exposes oppressive social structures and fights for gender justice in society. This article contributes to discussions about gender representation in literature and the importance of literature as a tool for social change. Keywords: patriarchy, representation, womanhood

Abstract

This research explores the role of the heroine in preserving Balinese cultural identity, focusing on the character of Luh Ayu Manik Mas from the children's story, "At War with the Spirit World." By employing Roland Barthes's mythological analysis, we delve into the denotative and connotative meanings embedded within the narrative. Denotatively, the heroine is portrayed as an independent and strong figure, essential for cultural continuity. She actively engages in preserving Balinese traditions, such as participating in water rituals and protecting the environment. Connotatively, the heroine embodies qualities of bravery, sacrifice, and a deep connection to Balinese cultural values. Her actions highlight the significance of environmental sustainability and the preservation of cultural heritage in the face of modern challenges. By analyzing the character of Luh Ayu Manik Mas, this research demonstrates how literature can contribute to the maintenance of cultural identity. The heroine's journey serves as a powerful tool for transmitting cultural values and inspiring future generations to embrace and preserve Balinese traditions.
