Abstract

Based on the depositional environment, the Quaternary deposits in the study area can be divided into five groups, i.e : (a) fluvial-channel deposits, (b) floodplain deposits (c) lake deposits, (d) transition/ tidal deposits, and (e) swamp deposits. Furthermore, this Quaternary deposits represent 3 (three) depositional intervals, namely Depositional Interval I-III.The development of the Quaternary environment and changes of basin fill in the research area were influenced by tectonic and climatic changes. Changes in climatological conditions, from the humid-subhumid into dry, probably due to global climatic changes following the Milankovitch cycles. While the vertical and lateral changes of environment systems could be influenced by reactivation of Singkarak-Solok fault segment. Keywords: Quaternary, tectonic, climate, environment

Abstract

A coastal plain area having dynamic charakterisitc. Understanding of Quaternary stratigraphy plays an important role in explaining the occurance of geological processes during the development of the coastal plain. Holocene stratigraphic sequence analysis reveals that the studied area has been influenced by several geological processes such as sea level rise and drop, and tectonic activities. These geological phenomenas are expected as the agents to change the directions of coastal plain development. Keywords: tectonics, quaternary stratigraphic sequences, sea level rise, sea level drop

Abstract

The landscape of Payakumbuh and the surrounding area is characterized by the influences of volcanic and tectonic origins as well as by geological processes like weathering, erosion, sedimentation and solution. The landscape which is built up by the product of Marapi and Malintang Volcanoes, occupies the central part of the investigated area. The landscape of volcanic origin was then affected by tectonic activities producing lineaments that are assumed as active faults. These faults which are in NW-SE direction, seem to have the same direction as the Takung River Fault Zone. Based on its geomorphological characteristics and processes, the landform of the investigated area can be distinguished into volcanic, fluvial, fluvio-volcanic, denudational, structural and karst origin. It can be concluded that morfogeneticly the investigated area has been formed by endogen and exogen prosesses. Exogen prossesses produced the denudational, fluvial, and kars origin, while endogen process produced the structural and volcanic origins. Keywords: landscape, landform, volcano-tectonic origin, structural origin.

Abstract

Geomorphologically, the investigated area can be classified into several morphologic origins, i.e: volcanic, fluvio-volcanic, volcanic denudated, denudational, structural-volcanic and fluvial. Moreover, on the basis of the aerial photo interpretation and ground checking, two volcanic cones can be recognized, i.e., old and young Maninjau volcanoes. This assumption supported by the bathymetry map of the Maninjau Lake that shows two points of maximum depth at different locations, -168 m in the north and -169 m in the south sides respectively. These data indicate that the volcano has two different eruption centres. Keywords: geomorphology, fluvio-volcanic, denudational, structural
