Abstract

The reception of contemporary literary works has evolved through interactive commentary on the internet. Unfortunately, literary studies, such as Arab and Indonesian literature, as seen in the Indonesian scholarly publication database, have yet to address this new phenomenon. The theories employed have also failed to highlight the significant nuances of horizon of expectations and repertoire in reader reception. Using a relevant literature tracking method, this article focuses on reception theory proposed by two Konstanz School scholars, Hans Robert Jauss and Wolfgang Iser. The findings indicate that the concept of literary reception theory is built upon the foundations of three predecessors: Russian Formalism, Prague Structuralism, and Gadamer's Hermeneutics. Among these predecessors, Jauss formulated the theory of reception with the horizon of reader expectations, while Iser enhanced reader response with the notion of repertoire. This article emphasizes the importance of considering reader response and the interaction between language and readers in comprehending the reception of texts holistically.

Abstract

This study examines the development of Indonesian digital literature through the identification of its forms and the accompanying methodological implications. Although literary production in the digital space is increasingly abundant and has received academic attention, there is still little attention examining the diversity of forms and its methodological consequences that arise from differences in material and medium. Two main problems that guide this study are how have Indonesian digital literary forms developed as a medium of expression, and what methodological challenges arise in examining them. This study then uses a historical-material approach borrowing Bolter and Grusin's media remediation framework. This study identifies four main categories: Material Digital Literature, Web-based Literature, App-based Literature, and Chat Literature as well as Generative Literature. Each form demonstrates transformations in the production and reception of literary texts, which require different methodological approaches. This article’s argument emphasizes the importance of alignment between method, medium form, and interpretive validity in the study of digital literature. These findings encourage the development of an adaptive approach in the study of Indonesian digital literature to achieve a sharp understanding of technological and authorial aspects.

Abstract

This study examines the inner conflict and personality dynamics of the main character in Atta Verin's short story "Happiness that Kills" through Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic approach. Using descriptive qualitative methods, the study results reveal tension between the main character's id, ego, and superego in balancing personal desires and moral demands as a mother. The use of defense mechanisms such as denial and repression is also found. The study concludes that the character's happiness is ironic and destructive, as revealed through an in-depth analysis of her psychological structure.
