Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the concentration of Na2S in the process liming/ scaling the tensile strength and elongation water snake crust leather (Hemalopsis Buccata). Raw material used is 12 sheets of water snake skin (Hemalopsis Buccata). In the scales removing process Na2S was used with concentration level of 0.5 oBe; 0.75 oBe; 1.0 oBe; 1.25 oBe. At the end of the crust leather tanning process, tensile strength and elongation were tested. The test results will be compared with SNI No. 06-4586-1998 of the quality requirements of chrome tanned water snake finished leather. From the tensile strength test result, increased concentrations of Na2S resulted in decreased tensile strength, though it still in accordance with the SNI with requirement at least 1000 N / cm2. From the elongation test results, note that all the elongation above a maximum of 30% requisite by SNI. Nonetheless refers to the suitability of common data quality requirements of various types of finished leather from BASF (2004), the leather still can be processed leather products due to the strong and soft texture. Increasing concentrations of Na2S will increase the pH value at the liming/ scaling and influence the tensile strength.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze students’ tendencies in choosing themes/titles for their final assignments in the Leather Technology Study Program from 2003 until 2012. Results of this study can be considered in the future in directing the students to carry out their final projects which are in line with the achievement of ALT vision. This research used descriptive qualitative approach with quantitative content analysis (content analysis qualitative /QCA) in analyzing the data. The results of this research showed that the distribution of students interested in completing final project through industrial internship program was 93.23%, through research was 0.52% and through the independent work was 6.25%. Based on the raw material types which are of interest, there are 3 out of 8 kinds of animals: cows 45.26 %, sheep 26.84% , and goats 22.11% , Based on leather articles, there are 3 out of 8: shoe upper leather 33.68% , glove 28.42%, and upholstery 11.58 %. Based on leather processing, there are 3 out of 11: retanning 27.60 %, finishing 23.44 %, and tanning 13.54 %. The researched concludes that Leather Tannery Technology Program Study students prefer to take internship program as final assignment continued with Inovation work program. Inovation work program must be developed by expanding the use of raw materials from the skin of small animals such as rabbit, snake, fish, etc. needs to be developed, and students’ creativity in leather processing and finishing should be increased

Abstract

Finishing action is a finishing technique for crust dyed leather that has been sanded in the surface and finished to form artificial tattoo. Impregnation is a part of a finishing technique that aims to reduce the skin’s absorption ability to liquids, because in general the surface of the skin has high water absorption ability. The raw material for impregnation trial was 5 pieces of crust dyed cowhide with C and R qualities, thickness of 1.2-1.4 mm black. The impregnation material used in 2952 RE (acrylic polymer), melio resin A-716 (polyurethane resin), 8060 EE (penetrator) and aquades. Physical test results of tensile strength before repairing 17.01 N / mm2 after repairing 23.13 N / mm2, elongation of 70.73% after repairing 62.50%, and tear strength of 10.06N after repairing 25.17N. After improvement, there was an increase in the quality of skin quality according to SNI 06-4264-1996.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the physical character of vegetable tanned sheep using gambir (uncaria gambir). Twelve pieces of sheep pikel skin were tanned using 25% vegetable tanning material from three types of gambir (A, B, C) and two kinds of tanning formulations ((Std) and (Std + Aux)). Skin products were tested for physical characteristics (tensile strength, elongation, tear strength, softness and shrinkage temperature). Furthermore the test results were compared with two standard leather products, namely; standard 1 (SNI 06-0237-1989: standard for lining leather) and standard 2 (SNI 4593: 2011: standard for jacket leather). The use of all types of gambir and tanning formulations has produced skin that pass the standards of skin tensile strength, standard 1 (minimum 75 kg / cm2) and standard 2 (minimum 150 kg / cm2). The results of the skin elongation test showed that only the use of gambier A pass the standard 1 (maximum 25%) and only the use of gambier C with tanning formulations (Std + Aux) that did not pass standard 2 (maximum 60%). The results of the use of gambir A produced the highest tensile / elongation ratio, 12.16 kg / cm2for the tanning formulation (Std) and 10.42 kg/cm2for the formulation (Std + Aux). Skin tear strength was not required by standard 1 and all skins pass standard 2 (minimum 12.5 kg / cm). Skin softness was not required by standard 1 and all skins do not pass standard 2 standards (5.0-7.6 mm). The use of gambier B results the highest temperature shrinkage of skin, this was influenced by a high ratio t/nt (1.77) and low gum content (6.15%), the addition of auxiliaries (penetrator and sulphate oil) in the formulation tanning (Std + Aux) increases shrinkage temperature the skin from 760C to 780C.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using bright binder polyurethane material in improving the shiny value in the finishing process of upholstery automotive article for car seat covers. The raw material used in finished dyed cowhide or finished leather with thockness of 1,2-1,4 mm with an area 5 sqft. The trial was carried out using 6 sheets of A4 size finish leather (21x29,7 cm) which would be re-fixed pe sheet with a different concentration of polyurethane for each trial. The method of improving the shiny value for upholstery automotive article is re-sprayed (re-fixative) with trial of variations in reducing matt polyurethane and variations is adding bright binder polyurethane to fixative (top coat) formulations, to get the shiny value according to the customer master sample standards, namely 1,1-1,2 GU. the measurement of the shiny value is carried out using a glossmeter. The result obtained are the addition of polyurethane bright binder 2% to get the best result to improve the shiny value of upholstery automotive for car seat covers. These results have met customer standars both form testing using a glossmeter and critical test carried out. The conclusion is that upholstery auutomotive leather has shiny value that meets the customer master sampel standards.

Abstract

The limited availability of domestic raw materials has encouraged the leather tanning industry to import raw materials from various countries. The condition of skin raw materials imported from abroad is generally in the form of pickle or wet blue-like (skin that has been chrome tanned in small amounts (1.5% (w/w)). Industry concerns regarding the adequacy of tanning degree on wet blue-like skin conducing the treatment being carried out using the same method and amount of tanning agent for both pickle and wet blue-like skin. Thus, potentially causing excessive use of chrome. This research compares the effect of tanning treatment on thermal and microbial resistance as well as physical characteristics of glove leather with wet blue-like skin raw materials. Based on the research results, it is known that treatment without re-chroming produces lower thermal and microbial resistance than treatment with re-chroming. However, the formulation without re-chroming treatment on wet blue-like skin can be recommended for application considering that the results obtained have characteristics in accordance with the requirements according to SNI 06-0777-1996. The application without re-chroming formulations can enable produce efficiency due to the use of less chrome and faster operational times. Still, adjustments need to be made regarding handling to prevent the growth of microorganisms. This is because the probability of growth of microorganisms when applying formulations without tanning is higher than formulations with tanning.
