Abstract

Searching for medicinal raw materials derived from the isolation of secondary metabolite compounds is still being carried out to cure a range of illnesses, including infections and degenerative diseases caused by bacteria and free radicals. This research used endophytic fungi extract from the twig of Syzygium malaccense. The diffusion method was used for antibacterial activity and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) was used for antioxidant activity. Chemical compound was identified by using NMR spectroscopic method. This research found 5 isolate of endophytic fungi from twig of S. malaccense (YR1 – YR5). Strong antibacterial and antioxidant activity were showed by YR5. Based on molecular identification, YR5 was Fusarium verticillioides. Pure compound prodeced by endophytic fungi F. verticilloides was naphthalene (3-methoxy-7 methylnaphthalene-1,6-diol). This finding can be used as a basis for drug development.

Abstract

Needs analysis is a systematic process for determining objectives, identifying actual and expected conditions, and prioritizing actions. Needs analysis in the development procedure is carried out to determine the students' assessment of the practicum guide used and the expectations of the practicum guide to be made. The purpose of this study was to analyze student needs for the development of e-modules for microbiology practicum in the biology education study program at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang. This type of research is descriptive qualitative, while the instruments used are student questionnaires and interview guidelines for lecturers and laboratory assistants. The results obtained are 55% of students like microbiology courses, 78% of students like practicum methods, low student science process skills, learning microbiology has been with practicum activities, there is already a practicum guide but it is still printed and not model-based, 46% of students like practicum guides with laboratory assistant direction, 57% of difficult material is sensitivity to antimicrobial substances. In conclusion, it is necessary to develop a practicum guidebook based on the guided inquiry model and integrated with technology on the material of sensitivity to antimicrobial substances to improve the science process skills of biology education students at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang.

Abstract

Biology education at the senior high school level has an important role in providing students with an understanding of basic concepts regarding aspects of life, one of which is fungi. Fungi are one of the important topics in biology and have an important role in the ecosystem. The purpose of this study was to determine the needs of schools in creating teaching modules about fungi for grade X that are in accordance with the curriculum. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The results of the study showed that the curriculum implemented at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Air Saleh uses the Independent Curriculum, students prefer the way teachers teach using Student Worksheets (LKPD) media, with the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model. Practicum was chosen as a solution to solve problems given by teachers. The conclusion of this study is that schools have implemented the latest curriculum by analyzing student needs and teachers prefer learning using Student Worksheets (LKPD) and solving problems by creating project-based teaching modules.

Abstract

Gambir (Uncaria guianensis (Hunter) Roxb) is a shrub from the Rubiaceae family which has hard, twisting stems, short-stemmed leaves, light green in color, small white flowers with round cobs. Gambir is already known to have many medicinal benefits. Lots of compounds contained in gambier which are useful as antioxidants. In Indonesia it is used for betel nut besides the betel plant. Another benefit of the gambier plant is as a mixture of medicines for burns, headaches, diarrhea, dysentery, mouthwash, canker sores, and as a skin tanner to prevent decay which makes the skin look softer, more colorful and youthful. This study aims to isolate the types of endophytic fungi found on the bark of the gambier plant and to identify the types of endophytic fungi based on their macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. The research method used in this study was a sample of Gambir (U. guianensis) taken from Hamlet V, Tambang Rambang Village, Rambang Kuang Subdistrict, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra. The endophytic fungal isolation method used was gambier plant stem bark samples using PDA media. Bark taken from the main stem and branches, exfoliated less than a full circle. The results of this study succeeded in obtaining 5 isolates of endophytic fungi from the bark of gambir (U. guianensis) belonging to 4 different genera, including Trichoderma, Blastomyces, Fusarium, and Alternaria.

Abstract

Clean water is a basic need for society. However, the problem of clean water sources still occurs in the Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) area of South Sumatra Province. The condition of the water being brownish and oily is an unresolved problem. One source that has the potential to disrupt water quality is the presence of factories around rivers. This community service activity aims to identify water quality and provide training to the community regarding river water management strategies and drilled wells as the primary water source for obtaining clean water, as well as increasing understanding and knowledge about clean water management with the Gravity-fed Filter Technique. The method of activities related to clean water quality is carried out in four stages, namely: 1) Location survey (cross-sectional), 2) Water sampling and laboratory analysis, 3) Education on water quality standards, and 4) Training on Gravity-fed Filter Techniques. The laboratory analysis showed that the water samples smelled fishy and were brownish and oily. In addition, the results of microbiological tests on water samples contained Coliform bacteria (sanitation indicator bacteria), which were outside the provisions of Minister of Health Decree No. 907/MENKES/SK/VII/2002 concerning clean water quality requirements. Through training activities using the Gravity-fed Filter technique, the pH and bacteria contained in the water can be reduced. Clean water management strategies using the Gravity-fed Filter technique can be used as a solution to improve clean water quality. Every society can apply the Gravity-fed Filter technique. Through this activity, society has managed water sources into clean water for daily needs.

Abstract

Cashew fruit is a plant that is widely grown in eastern Indonesia, such as in NTB, Bali, NTT, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi. The study aimed to identify the endophytic fungi found in cashew trees. The method used in this research was taking samples, namely the roots, root bark, stems, bark and leaves of the cashew plant then making instant PDA media mixed with distilled water and antibiotics with direct planting techniques on PDA in Petri dishes. Furthermore, the purification of endophytic fungi was carried out followed by macroscopic and microscopic observations by observing the types of spores, spore forms, and hyphae. The results of macroscopic and microscopic observations on samples of isolates coded KB.AO1 and D.AO1 were identified as belonging to the genus Fusarium, isolates coded KB.AO2 belonged to the genus Trichoderma, isolates coded A.AO1 belonged to the genus Colletotrichum, and isolate A.AO2 belonged to the genus Acremonium, isolate KB.AO1 belongs to the genus Cladosporium, code KB.AO2 belongs to Aspergillus, isolate code BAO1 belongs to Pythium, isolate code BAO2 belongs to Mucor, and isolate code DAO2 belongs to Nigrospora.

Abstract

Mistletoe (Dendrophthoe pentandra) is a parasitic plant that has traditional medicinal properties. This study examines the endophytic fungi found in mistletoe roots and their bioactivity. Endophytic fungal species are identified using their morphological traits. Potato Dextrose Broth (PDB) medium is utilized for both culture and extraction, with ethyl acetate as a solvent. The antioxidant test employed the DPPH method, whereas the antibacterial test used the paper disc diffusion method. Mistletoe roots yielded four endophytic fungus isolates (BR1–BR4). The findings of morphological study revealed that BR1 (Pythium sp.), BR2 (Trichoderma sp.), BR3 (Fusarium sp.), and BR4 (Mortierella sp.). The endophytic fungus BR4 (Mortierella sp.) had the highest potential antioxidant and antibacterial activities. This endophytic fungal extract has the potential to be a source of novel medications through additional investigation by isolating the pure component and in vivo studies.
