Abstract

Abstract. Underwater archaeological research usually talks about archaeological remains under the sea like a sinking ship. The issue of sinking ships concerns the cargo, the type of ship, shipping lines, trade routes, and the origin and technology of shipbuilding. The problem is that archeological findings are not only in the sea, but also in lakes, swamps, or rivers. Therefore underwater archeology not only studies archeological findings in the sea but also on the lake. Archaeological findings originating from within the Matano lake include in the form of pottery both intact and fractions mixed with metal objects. Lake Matano located in Luwu Regency in South Sulawesi is an ancient lake and is the deepest lake in Southeast Asia. How and why these pottery findings arrived inside the lake, are the problems that will be answered in this study. The aim is to find out the function and role of pottery in the sites of Lake Matano and what factors influence it. With the method of inductive reasoning and underwater exploration and land and an analogy with the findings of similar pottery in the terrestrial area of the lake, we can find a connection between the findings of pottery and the same activities related to the manufacture of metal objects, and strong suspicion of tectonic activity that affects the site's existence.Keywords: Pottery, Underwater, Terrestrial, Metal, Lake MatanoAbstrak. Penelitian arkeologi bawah air biasanya berbicara tentang tinggalan arkeologi di bawah laut seperti kapal tenggelam. Isu kapal tenggelam ini menyangkut tentang muatan, jenis kapal, jalur pelayaran, jalur perdagangan, dan asal muasal dan teknologi pembuatan kapal. Permasalahannya, temuan arkeologi tidak saja berada di dalam laut, tetapi juga terdapat di perairan danau, rawa, ataupun sungai. Oleh karena itu, arkeologi bawah air tidak saja mempelajari temuan arkeologi di dalam laut, tetapi juga di danau. Temuan arkeologi yang berasal dari dalam Danau Matano antara lain berupa tembikar, baik utuh maupun pecahan yang bercampur dengan benda logam. Danau Matano yang terletak di Kabupaten Luwu di Sulawesi Selatan adalah danau purba dan merupakan danau terdalam di Asia Tenggara. Bagaimana dan mengapa temuan tembikar ini sampai berada di dalam danau adalah permasalahan yang hendak dijawab dalam penelitian ini. Tujuannya adalah untuk mengetahui fungsi dan peran keberadaan tembikar di situs-situs Danau Matano dan faktor-faktor apa yang mempengaruhinya. Dengan metode penalaran induktif dan ekplorasi bawah air dan daratan serta analogi dengan temuan tembikar serupa di area terrestrial danau dapat diketahui adanya hubungan antara temuan tembikar dengan aktivitas yang sama berkaitan dengan pembuatan benda logam, dan dugaan kuat adanya aktivitas tektonik yang mempengaruhi keberadaan situs.Kata kunci: Tembikar, Bawah air, Terrestrial, logam, Danau Matano

Abstract

Indonesia’s abundant underwater cultural heritage is potential resource for the pride of national identity, as well as the socio-economic growth. However, current utilization of such resource is still merely limited to exploitable commodities with no consideration to its sustainability. This article aims to identify problems in the regulatory aspect of the utilization of underwater cultural heritage in Indonesia and to propose an alternative utilization model to respond the identified problems. Data collection for this study includes structured interview and literature study. Interviewees are selected people from The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and Association of Indonesian Archaeologist. The results of qualitative analysis on the interview show overlapping implementation of four regulations regarding underwater cultural heritage. This article proposes a utilization concept adopted from the ecosystem restoration concession model as an alternative for sustainable utilization of underwater cultural heritage.

Abstract

Abstrak. Analisis Deskriptif Alat Batu Palaeolithik dari Sulawesi, Hasil Ekspedisi IndonesiaBelanda pada tahun 1970. Studi ini menganalisis artefak temuan ekspedisi Indonesia-Belanda di tahun 1970 di Marale di hulu dan Beru di hilir Sungai Wallanae; termasuk menguji hipotesis bahwa penghalusan material kasar di hilir terjadi pada artefak kecil. Batu gamping, kersikan, dan rijang merupakan bahan yang dominan. Artefak umumnya mengalami abrasi dan pembundaran dari tingkat moderat hingga kuat. Hampir semua artefak terpatinasi. Teknik ‘crushing’ merupakan tipe dominan dari persiapan bidang dorsal dekat dataran pukul. Dataran pukul umumnya datar dan ujung distal tipis. Himpunan serpih Marale yang umumnya lebih lebar dan panjang dibandingkan himpunan serpih Beru mendukung hipotesis tersebut. Kebanyakan alat serpih merupakan serut samping. Sebagai tambahan, berdasarkan klasifikasi morfologi yang baru diperkenalkan, umumnya batu inti (70%) memiliki platform tunggal, berbentuk pyramidal atau polihedral, walaupun ada yang double platform. Perkiraan pertanggalan van Heekeren dari 200 dan 100 ka agaknya tepat, sebagaimana publikasi van den Bergh yang mempertanggal artefak in situ dari ekskavasi di daerah yang sama di antara 194 dan 118 ka. Kata Kunci: Sulawesi, Walanae, Palaeolithic, Alat-alat batu, Survei Abstract. This study analysis lithic artefacts collected by the Indonesian-Dutch expedition to Sulawesi in 1970. In addition, the hypothesis was tested that downstream fining of coarse material results in smaller artefacts. The artefacts were collected by surveying in Marale (upstream) and Beru (downstream) along the Walanae River. Most artefacts were abraded and rounded. Almost all artefacts were patinated. Silificied limestone and chert were the predominant raw materials for making stone tools. Crushing was the predominant type of dorsal face preparation near the striking platform. The dominant platform type was plain and the dominant distal end feather. The width and the maximal length of the flakes of Marale were significantly larger than those of Beru, confirming the above hypothesis. Most flake tools were side scrapers. In addition to the functional standard classification also a new morphological classification was introduced. Most cores (70%) were single platformed, pyramidal or polyhedral, but also double platformed cores were present. Dating of the stone tools between 200 and 100 ka as earlier suggested by van Heekeren might be plausible based on a recently published study by van den Bergh (2016) who dated in situ artefacts excavated in the same region between 194 and 118 ka.
