Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of Think Pair Share technique on students' reading comprehension. The method used is meta analysis. Meta analysis is used to obtain the effect size value by combining several existing research results. A total of 20 published articles in the form of journals as well as theses were used as data sources, which were then analyzed. The final result of this research shows: 1) Think Pair Share technique on students' reading comprehension based on the total research findings shows a value with an average effect size of 1.747 in the very high category. 2) Think Pair Share technique on students' reading comprehension based on educational stages, both at the university, senior and junior high school stages, shows a high effect size result, but senior high school occupies the highest position in the score with an average effect size of 2.213 in the very high category. 3) Think Pair Share technique on students' reading comprehension based on regions. There are three coverage areas, namely Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi, which occupy the highest position in the score with an average effect size of 2.172 in the very high category. It was concluded that Think Pair Share technique was effectively applied to students' reading comprehension by looking at the results of previous studies, and the findings of the effect size results in this meta analysis research were in the very high category.

Abstract

The study aimed at finding out the students' access and ease with technology, as well as the barriers and prospects of using the Learning Management System (LMS) at Institut Parahikma Indonesia (IPI). An explanatory sequential mixed method was used in this study. There were 16 students from English Education Department and four lecturers selected using the purposive sampling technique. The instruments were a questionnaire and an in-depth interview. The results revealed that the students' access was well-versed in technology and felt at ease utilizing the LMS. Students' and lecturers' common barriers were insufficient bandwidth connections and a lack of personal time management, while their common prospects were enhanced infrastructure and internet connections, and large capacity in LMS for uploading data, lack of training for students, incompatible features in particular assignments, and a limited budget for internet usage. Meanwhile, students' prospects were LMS application on Google Play, direct assignment notification via SMS, and feedback from lecturers. In contrast, the lecturers' prospects were that all IPI materials should be accessible in LMS. Therefore, the institution needs to provide LMS training for the students, evaluate the lecturers, and enhance the capacity of the bandwidth connection. Moreover, the LMS features should be upgraded to maximize the functions.

Abstract

:   Although word stress is a crucial aspect of English speaking, it is not given much emphasis in Indonesia's EFL instruction. Students, consequently, lack the theoretical understanding of how to properly stress syllables in English words. This study uses a program named Praat to examine the acoustic parameters of word stress produced by EFL students in terms of its intensity level. These parameters can indicate whether the students pronounce two-syllable words of nouns and verbs accurately. The subjects of this research were the third-year students of English Education Department who were selected purposively based on the students’ results of EF SET (Standardized English Test). The findings revealed that the students produced more inaccurate word stress when pronouncing nouns than they did when pronouncing verbs. Moreover, the inaccurate word stress produced by the students was divided into three categories: equation stress, no-stress placement, and reverse stress. Among the three categories, equation stress is the most common error found in this study. This study provides insight into the features of word stress and the acoustic measurement of word stress produced by Indonesian learners of English. It implies that there is a need to integrate explicit instruction on word stress. This could involve dedicated lessons on stress placement, incorporating practical exercises and feedback mechanisms to help students develop a theoretical understanding and practical skills in pronouncing English words accurately. The study also encourages future research in related areas, suggesting a focus on other pronunciation problems like intonation. This broader approach to research can contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges Indonesian learners face in mastering English pronunciation that can provide a foundation for curriculum development and instructional strategies aimed at enhancing English language proficiency in Indonesia.
