Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the hypothesis that there appears a systematic order of the acquisition of past tenses. It is claimed that irregular past tense verbs are acquired earlier than regular past tense verbs. In comparison to the acquisition of irregular and regular past verbs, the acquisition of the past copula be forms `was` and `were` is believed to take place much earlier. To test this hypothesis, the data were collected from forty-six students who were asked to write an essay with a minimum of 250 words to get data of the use of past tenses. The findings reveal partial support for the hypothesis, suggesting that the universal order of morpheme acquisition may not be a stable phenomenon.

Abstract

One of the most serious problems in effective teaching and learning processes at the secondary level is students' disruptive behavior. All stakeholders should have been giving more attention to students' disruptive behavior especially during learning processes.  This study aimed to give a descriptive account of the factors causing students’ disruptive behavior in learning English based on the case study of a student who is categorized as the most disruptive student in learning English. This study applied descriptive qualitative research by using a purposive sampling technique. Two of the EFL teachers, a counselor, two of his classmates, and one of his family were interviewed for the data collection. The observation checklist and field notes were also used to show the student's disruptive behavior when learning English. The data analysis consisted of the data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion: drawing/verification. The findings showed that the factors causing the student’s disruptive behavior in learning English were (a) seeking attention, (b) classmate, (c) close friend, (d) learning environment, (e) family, and (f) social environment. It can be inferred that the most dominant cause of student’s disruptive behavior came from external factors.

This study scrutinized strategies applied by the successful student in learning English by using deep interview and questionnaires. There were two questionnaires used in this research namely inventory of language learning strategies by good language learner (GLL) by Rubin and inventory of language learning strategies (SILL) by Oxford. These instruments helped the researcher to investigate which strategies mostly applied by the student. In addition, the interview was employed to explore other factors that might have affected or supported the student’s learning. The finding shows that the successful learner at bilingual program of FMIPA UNM tends to use a variety of learning strategies in their learning. Although it cannot be said that one strategy is better than the other strategies, yet, it is true that the varied strategies the students use, the better performance they could gain.

Abstract

This study investigates EFL lecturers’ grading practices, focusing on the beliefs underlying these practices, the types of assessment they implement to determine students’ final grades, and multiple factors influencing them in deciding students’ final grades. Applying interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), two EFL lecturers, one from an Islamic higher education institution and the other from a general higher education institution, were interviewed to reveal their grading practices. The findings of the research reveal that both lecturers believe that grades should reflect students’ learning outcomes. They serve as an instrument to measure the achievement of learning objectives and to identify which items from the course need to be improved. Both lecturers also believe that assigning final grades should involve multiple aspects related to moral character development. Furthermore, they apply various types of assessment. They employ formal and informal assessment types to obtain students’ scores before deciding their final grades. In addition, they consider academic factors, such as scores derived from formal and informal assessments, and non-academic factors, such as students’ efforts, attitude, and attendance, should be employed in their grading practices.     Keywords: Grading practices; Assessment; Academic Factors; Non-academic Factors
