Abstract

Abstract

Since ancient times, Yawa Unat have indigenous community revered the land as Mother. The land is a precious and vital resource for indigenous peoples. Nevertheless, the area considered sacred has a very significant economic worth for survival. Realizing that they had lost their land rights and their relationship with the land during the preceding decade, the Yawa Unat sold the land. The land is not simply a mother whose womb gives birth to and enriches the lives of the Yawa Unat Tribe's people. So far, study on Yawa Unat has focused mostly on the economic and religious significance of land as mom. Consequently, the struggle of the Yawa Unat tribe to defend their land is viewed as concentrated solely on their own interests. Furthermore, in this research, utilizing Carolyn Merhant's feminist approach, we suggest that land as a mother has a significant value for the balance of the ecosystem of life for both Yawa Unat and the people of Papua and the natural world of Papua holistically. Therefore, the ethical aspect of Yawa Unat's battle has a significant global impact on the human-nature interaction in Papua. Lastly, this research is limited to ethical considerations and does not yet address features of local religious politics and religious liberty that are crucial to this topic.

Abstract

Since its establishment in 2016, the Indonesian government has conducted Pendidikan Kepercayaan (Belief Education) as religious education for indigenous communities and kepercayaan (belief) adherents in Indonesia. Various studies affirm that kepercayaan Education is the Indonesian government's way of eliminating discrimination against indigenous communities and kepercayaan adherents in the educational sphere. Other research on kepercayaan Education targets the challenges of implementation in the school context. This work attempts to examine the interconnectedness of kepercayaan education and the education of indigenous religions and kepercayaan adherents within the community context. The underlying question is does belief education represent the education of indigenous religions within communities? How does the education of indigenous religions in the community context contribute to and be included in the development of kepercayaan education? As a theoretical framework, I employ the concept of indigenization that has developed in the discourse of indigenous education in Canada. The method used in this research is a literature study. The results of this study indicate that belief education does not represent the education of indigenous religions and kepercayaan adherents within the community realm. Kepercayaan education is a service designed unilaterally by the state without recognizing and respecting the diversity and educational needs of indigenous communities in Indonesia. As an alternative, I propose a reconciliation and collaboration-based indigenization approach as a new framework for reconstructing kepercayaan education. The path of reconciliation and collaboration provides a space for children of indigenous communities to achieve the national educational aspiration of learning and practicing the teachings of their 'religion' in accordance with the educational model of their respective communities.

Abstract

Research on compulsory religious education policies in Indonesia, criticized for their normative and pedagogically lacking nature, primarily functions as religious instruction due to their mono-religious focus (Bagir: 2011, Suhadi et al.: 2013, Yusuf and Sterkens: 2016). Consequently, the existing religious education model in Indonesia falls short in fostering tolerance and mutual respect among students of diverse faiths, particularly within the school setting. The mono-religious approach not only presents pedagogical challenges but also hinders the development of dialogue between teachers and students of differing beliefs. This paper attempts to narrate teachers' experiences in teaching religious education to students of various religions, utilizing qualitative methods such as literature review and interviews. The study focuses on Christian religion teachers at SMAK BPK PENABUR Jakarta. The findings reveal that teachers face challenges in bridging knowledge gaps between themselves and students, prompting the need for negotiation and transformation of the religious education classroom into an interreligious education space, fostering dialogue between teachers and students of different faiths.
