Abstract

Adolescent girls are susceptible to nutritional and psychological problems due to changes during puberty. Selective eating behavior and negative body image perceptions may affect nutritional intake, potentially leading to eating disorders and mental health issues. This study aimed to examine the relationship between food selectivity and body image with nutritional status in adolescent girls. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was used, involving 89 purposively sampled female adolescents aged 15–19 years from a population of 790. Anthropometric measurements were conducted using a microtoise and a digital scale, and data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Results showed that 17.5% of participants were undernourished. There was no significant association between food selectivity and nutritional status (p = 0.454), but a significant association was found between negative body image and abnormal nutritional status (p = 0.001). In conclusion, body image is significantly associated with nutritional status, whereas food selectivity is not, among adolescent girls at SMA Negeri 2 Palu.

Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is a prevalent gynecological problem among adolescent girls, often influenced by modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep quality, and nutritional status. This study aimed to examine the association of junk food consumption, sleep quality, and nutritional status with dysmenorrhea among female students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 169 female students at SMKN 1 Palu, Indonesia. Data were collected using validated questionnaires: Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) for junk food intake, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) for sleep quality, and BMI-for-age for nutritional status. Dysmenorrhea severity was assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Data were analyzed using Chi-square and Spearman tests. Results: The findings revealed that poor sleep quality was significantly associated with dysmenorrhea (p = 0.038), while junk food consumption (p = 0.646) and nutritional status (p = 0.426) showed no significant association. Conclusion: Sleep quality emerged as a modifiable determinant of dysmenorrhea, suggesting that improving sleep hygiene may help alleviate menstrual pain among adolescents. Integrated health promotion strategies that combine sleep education and balanced nutrition are recommended for adolescent reproductive health programs.

Abstract

Stunting is still a priority nutrition problem today. The Kamaipura Health Center is one of the health centers in Sigi Regency that is ranked first with the highest prevalence of stunting in 2023. Some of the factors that cause stunting are the low use of Maternal and Child Health (KIA) books and poor maternal personal hygiene. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the use of KIA books and maternal personal hygiene with stunting in children under five years aged 24-59 months in the working area of the Kamaipura Health Center. The research method used observational analytical design and a cross-sectional approach. The population was all toddlers aged 24-59 months. A sample of 112 respondents was selected using the simple random sampling method. Data were collected through interviews with structured. It is known that 56.2% of toddlers are stunted, 73.2% lack of knowledge, 52.7% do not use KIA books, and 37.5% do not have good personal hygiene. Stunted toddlers who have mothers with less knowledge are 69.5%, stunting toddlers who have mothers who do not use KIA books are 83.1%, and stunting toddlers who have poor personal hygiene are 95.2%. There was a significant relationship between knowledge (p<0.001), the use of KIA books (p<0.001), and personal hygiene (p<0.001) with stunting. There is a significant relationship between knowledge and stunting, the use of KIA books and stunting, and personal hygiene and stunting. There is a need for further research related to knowledge and the influence of nutrition education on the level of knowledge of mothers regarding the use of KIA books and personal hygiene using the pre post test method.
