By drawing on Ottoman-Turkish documents in the Prime Ministerâs Ottoman Archives, this paper investigates the role of the Ottoman state and Pan-Islamic ideology on modernisation in Indonesia. The article revisits the process defining the Ethical Policy (Politik Etis) as the turning point of the emergence of modernisation in Indonesia. In existing scholarship, the âEthical Policyâ became the grand narrative in Indonesian history, meanwhile the influence of Pan-Islamism is only seen as the unsuccessful political propaganda of Abdulhamid II on the anti-colonialism movement in Indonesia. Many Indonesian and Ottoman historians view Pan-Islamism in the context of anti-colonialism fighting against the Dutch militarily in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This article proposes an alternative view to this narrative which acknowledges Pan-Islamism as a modernisation step for Indonesians which was signed by the Jawi students arrival in Istanbul and shows the Hadhrami community as the agent of modernisation. In short, the article shows the Ottoman influence on the emergence of the Ethical Policy of 1901 in Indonesia.[Menggunakan dokumen-dokumen Turki Utsmani yang disimpan di Prime Ministerâs Ottoman Archives, makalah ini meneliti peran imperium Utsmani dan ideologi Pan-Islam dalam modernisasi Indonesia.

On 1955, the Republic of Turkey sent their delegation to participate in the Bandung Conference. What is striking, before and during their participation, was persistent distrust and reservations of Turkish delegation to the aims and purposes of Bandung Conference. The convenational explanation about this attitude is mainly provided by analyses that put the rationale to Cold War environment and Turkey position as NATO member. By highlighting the discourse surrounding Turkey participation before and during the conference, and analyzed the issue into the framework of global historical context, this paper argues that the delegation's reservations and distrust toward Bandung Conference was not merely a product of her contemporary position as NATO member and Cold War politics, but had a deeper intellectual roots in the intellectual development of Turkey elite groups when it was stiil under Ottoman state. The main point of their position was because Turkey considered themselves not as Asian Muslim, but rather identifying themselves as Western Muslim. This position have become a crucial aspect that shaped the mental outlook of Turkish position in the conference.

Thomas Stanford Raffles was one of the governors general who ruled Java between 1811 and 1816. His short period of power is often overlooked by historians. Nevertheless, Raffles' reign played an important role in Indonesian history before independence. The first English language newspaper published during Raffles' reign was the Java Government Gazette. This article investigates and analyzes the Java Government Gazette in the collection of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia. This newspaper was published between 1812 and 1816. The Java Government Gazette newspaper played a significant role as a source for the history of the Dutch East Indies in the early 19th century. In fact, this newspaper also shows how the Dutch East Indies cannot be separated from the global dynamics of the 19th century. This newspaper provides various information, such as the slave trade, ship transportation, buying and selling of assets and products and information regarding the British and French conflict. This research method is a qualitative method that emphasizes the analysis of historical information in the Java Government Gazette newspaper. In this research, the author argues that the Java Government Gazette newspaper is an important historical source for understanding the position of the Dutch East Indies at the beginning of the 19th century from a global historical perspective.

This paper will investigate a brief intellectual history of Rafet Bey, an Ottoman statesman who was appointed as consul-general in Batavia in the early twentieth century. In this paper, intellectual and global history will be the main approach to analyze relations between the Ottomans and the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) in the early twentieth century, especially during the First World War. The appointment of Rafet Bey as Ottoman consul in Batavia coincided with a moment of strength for the Dutch East Indies, after conquering Aceh and other Indonesian regions. On the other hand, the emergence of the Armenian question also caused some difficulties in Ottoman foreign policy at the time. In short, a brief intellectual biography of Rafet Bey is important because it allows deeper analysis on Ottoman- Indonesia relations in the early twentieth century.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v24i1.3684

The early twentieth century served as a dynamic age for various modern movement intellectuals. The steamboat discovery enabled people to rush from one place to another, allowing a more active exchange of ideas and insights. Sutomo was a Javanese intellectual playing an essential role in Indonesia’s modern history. In 1936-1937 he travelled around the world and visited several countries, one of which was Turkey. This article discussed Sutomo’s views on modernization processes taking place in Turkey. This study employed a historical method by using articles from Soeara Oemoem’s newspaper from 1936-1937. That newspaper elaborately described Sutomo’s journey while he was in Turkey. In this article, we argued that social and economic situations influenced Sutomo’s views on Turkey’s modernization in the Dutch East Indies. His experiences abroad influenced his further involvement in the discourse of Indonesian secular and Islamic nationalism.
