Abstract

The development of accessible learning media is an important necessity in efforts to improve disaster preparedness among students with visual impairments. This study aimed to develop audiobook-based disaster education media and evaluate its effectiveness in improving disaster knowledge and preparedness among visually impaired students. The study was conducted at the State Special School of Banda Aceh City from June to December 2025, using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving repeated measurements. The developed product was an educational disaster-preparedness audiobook, designed according to the learning needs of visually impaired students and validated by experts. The study participants consisted of visually impaired students selected through purposive sampling based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected through an online questionnaire equipped with screen-reader functionality and through observations conducted during the learning process. Data analysis included normality testing, paired-difference testing, and repeated-measures analysis of variance. The findings indicated significant improvements in disaster knowledge and preparedness scores after the audiobook-based educational intervention. A follow-up measurement conducted one week after the intervention showed that students’ knowledge levels remained relatively stable, indicating knowledge retention. These findings were further supported by increased student participation and active engagement throughout the learning process. The disaster-education audiobook was demonstrated to be an effective and inclusive learning medium for disaster education among students with visual impairments.
