Abstract

Unmanaged household waste accumulation in Sembung Village, Balongpanggang District, Gresik Regency, poses an environmental challenge affecting public health and environmental quality. A lack of awareness regarding waste segregation and the economic potential of domestic waste remains the core issue. This community service activity aims to enhance the knowledge, awareness, and skills of Sembung Village residents in managing household waste through a circular economy approach. The program was conducted using the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) method, consisting of four main phases: identification of assets and problems, socialization of circular economy concepts, technical training on waste sorting and creative recycling (such as composting and ecobricks), and sustainability mentoring. The target partners were 35 participants from the local Family Welfare Movement (PKK) and youth organization (Karang Taruna). The findings revealed an 85% increase in community understanding of organic and inorganic waste segregation, as measured by pre-test and post-test evaluations. Participants successfully recycled plastic waste into value-added items and produced liquid organic fertilizer from kitchen waste independently. Implementing circular economy principles effectively reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills while creating opportunities for local economic value addition through waste reuse. The program's success is driven by active community participation and the village government's commitment to initiating an independent waste management unit in Sembung Village.
