Abstract

We consider the substantial relationship between teachers' reading habits and teaching practices in the Indonesian context. This issue has piqued the interest of research. Therefore, this study investigates how teachers' reading habits influence their teaching practice. This study employs narrative inquiry by Clandinin and Connelly (2000) as a qualitative research design, allowing us to collect rich data through the unique stories of the participants. This study involves three Indonesian English teachers at one of the vocational high schools in Indonesia, namely SMK Negeri 1 Pringapus. Specifically, this study uses a narrative inquiry framework by Clandinin and Conelly (2002). We collected the data through observation, questionnaires, interviews Creswell (2012); transcribing, and coding based on Bailey (2008). Additionally, to obtain trustworthiness, we use the theory of Guba and Lincoln (1982). The findings show that teachers' reading habits have vital roles in their teaching practice. The findings also clearly demonstrate a solid and lasting relationship between teachers' reading habits and teaching practice. This study suggests that educators, in particular, should improve reading habits both for professional needs as teachers and personal needs. It is also necessary to continue to improve the quality of teaching practice by strengthening reading habits. Key Words: teachers' reading habit, narrative inquiry, teaching practice

Abstract

Metaphors deal with transferring words to other words by comparing the similarity of its meaning. This study investigated the realization of metaphors and their relationship among the four types in the novel. Lakoff and Johnson; Lakoff and Turner mentioned four metaphors; those are structural metaphors, orientational metaphors, ontological metaphors, and image metaphors. These metaphor categorizations are mentioned in the Contemporary Theory of Metaphors (CTM). The researchers conducted a linguistic analysis of text as the method. To collect the data, the researchers used MIPVU (Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit) in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. The metaphors which are found were analyzed based on classifications as they are used in the novel. In this study, there are 367 metaphors found in the novel; those are 56 structural metaphors, 40 orientational metaphors, 222 ontological metaphors, 36 image metaphors, and 13 compound metaphors. The most used metaphor in the novel is Ontological metaphor because it has more general specification than other metaphors. The compound metaphors are found based on the relationship of the four types. They are used together to strengthen, clarify, support, complete, and continue each other. The results presented that all of the metaphors are mapped in a proper way. It means they have compatible concepts transferred. Thus, this result can be used by the learners as supporting words to raise the learners' quality of speech.

Abstract

In a talk show, conversations naturally operate by taking turns. Sometimes the participants ignore the rules and focus more on gaining significant attention from the audience than making successful conversations. The participants involved in the conversation have the power to organize the distribution of conversational turns. This research applied qualitative research, which concerns evaluating the power and status of turn-taking mechanism used by the participants in talk show. The data used all utterances produced by participants from two episodes in Insight with Desi Anwar talk show. The utterances were transcribed using Jefferson's transcript notation. In addition, the data were analyzed by using the theories, such as Stenstrom, Sacks et al., and Brown and Levinson. The study reveals three findings related to the research questions. First, the results showed that taking the turn strategy was the most often used by the participants of the two episodes in talk show, followed by holding the turn strategy and yielding the turn strategy. Second, the phenomenon of turn-taking mechanism is influenced by power and status, where status affects participants in dominating turn-taking. Third, the quality of the conversation can be seen from the fluency of conversation itself in applying the rules of turn-taking mechanism. The participants use two rules, selecting the next speaker and self-selection. Pedagogically, this study can be used to make the teachers and students consider the significance of having an understanding of turn-taking mechanism, knowing the rules and how to maintain turn-taking, and the meaning of words in the spoken interaction.
