Abstract

This paper outlines the development of Critical Regionalism Concept, introduced by Kenneth Frampton, whom a professor in history and architecture. His most influential achievement was a book titled "Toward A Critical Regionalism", that introduced critical regionalism theory/thought as a response of globalization and universalization impact. His thought was based on the worry of excessive impact of modernism and globalism, and political situation at that time, causing buildings of western classic architecture style replaced by modern architecture style as symbols of industrialism. Critical Regionalism theory tried to put back architecture and buildings to the context and the development of its surrounding, as an effort to strengthen local identity by seeing its potency and noticing every details in buildings. Now, this theory is widespread and developed by world architects. These architects succeed in making modern architecture more tactile and tectonic, creating creative and tectonic structures forms, which able to counter universalism in architecture by placing back technology as instrument in architecture

Abstract

Rumah Panggong is a form of local architecture in Belitung Island, where there are not many architectural studies focusing on it. This study focused on the spatial aspect, because space is the firstly generated architectural design idea to facilitate activities or society culture before later developed into the form, structure, materials, and so forth. The approach used was qualitative descriptive with emphasis on data collection method using field observations, as well as data analysis method using a coding system, which included open coding, axial coding phase and selective coding phase. Through this research, it was found that Rumah Panggong is formed into 3 parts, namely mother room, suyok or porch, and cesspit. These 3 parts form the typo-morphology of the building. The basic spatial ideas of Rumah Panggong can be identified by its functionality, effectiveness, flexibility and most essentially its mother room existence.

Abstract

Abstract

Old town means an historic or original core of a city which signifies the city’s origin growth. When the city develops and expands its built area, the emergence of a new development center will be inevitable. This study focuses on the connection of the old and new development center of Balikpapan city. In defining the mentioned connection, the authors use Space Syntax theory and depthmapX[net] software to analyze connectivity, integration and choice of the observed networks. Space Syntax analyses helped defining the spatial configuration of the old and the new center of development of Balikpapan city which has higher scores in main connectors and lower scores in local streets which also defines the movement and accessibility of the observed area. It is hoped that this study would be beneficial in guiding the planning and design of the future development of Balikpapan city that is appropriate with its spatial configuration.
