Abstract

Mental health is a crucial aspect of human well-being that includes physical, mental, and social dimensions. One of the real impacts of chronic mental disorders such as schizophrenia is the decrease in the deficit self-care of sufferers which causes them to neglect personal hygiene. This community service activity (PkM) aims to increase the understanding, motivation, and skills of psychiatric patients and families (caregivers) regarding the importance of self-care by integrating local cultural values (Batak culture). The method of implementing activities is carried out through health counseling and psychoreligious and cultural assistance in the Medan Tuntungan District area. This intervention involved an academic team from STIKes Darmo Medan with the target audience including outpatient psychiatric patients, caregiver families, Batak traditional leaders, and local health cadres. The evaluation of the activity was carried out by comparing the results of the pre-test and post-test to measure the level of improvement in understanding and skills of the target. The main supporting factor for this activity is the permission from the sub-district apparatus and the strong kinship ties of the Dalihan Na Tolu system in the Batak ethnic community. In conclusion, the synergy between clinical approaches and local wisdom of Batak culture is effective in stimulating the independence of psychiatric patients and reducing the burden of family care in a sustainable manner.

Carried out at the Delima Clinic by an academic team from STIKes Darmo Medan, this intervention involved public health counseling and interactive focus group discussions, and was evaluated through a pre-test and post-test quantitative design. The results showed a significant increase in participants' awareness, effectively eliminating traditional food taboos, and empowering mothers to safely utilize local nutrients to speed up the healing of perineal wounds. In conclusion, structured education on safe local food sources and traditional herbal medicine serves as an effective strategy to optimize the recovery and well-being of postpartum mothers.

Abstract

The postpartum period or postpartum period is a critical phase that requires significant physical and psychological adaptation. The mother's inability to adapt in this phase risks causing physical complications to mental health problems. Self-care skills are the main key to optimal recovery, where success is greatly influenced by family support. This community service activity aims to empower families as the main companions of mothers in improving postpartum self-care skills by harmonizing medical knowledge and local family values. The activity was carried out at the Hana Kasih Clinic on October 24, 2024 by an academic team from STIKes Darmo Medan, involving postpartum mothers and their family members (husbands, parents, or relatives). The methods used are direct health counseling and interactive discussions. The evaluation was carried out through a pre-test and post-test design to measure the improvement of family understanding and maternal self-care independence. The results of the activity showed an increase in family understanding of the importance of postpartum assistance and helped erode myths or erroneous taboos that can hinder maternal recovery. In conclusion, this local value-based family support education is effective in optimizing the physical and mental recovery of mothers after childbirth in a sustainable manner.
