Abstract

The phenomena of radicalism and violent extremism in Indonesia, in some cases, cannot be separated from pesantren (Islamic boarding schools); some jihadis (read: terrorists) are pesantren graduates. However, as an educational institution that has rooted in the Indonesia Muslim communities, the majority of pesantren carry the spirit of religious moderation. They have even produced many alumni promoting peaceful, tolerant, and democratic views of Islam. Some pundits have confirmed the moderate character of pesantren. Azyumardi Azra, in his review on the results of the study of the Center for the Study of Religion and Culture (CSRC) and the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM, Pusat Pengkajian Islam dan Masyarakat) UIN Jakarta (The Jakarta Post, 22 December 2019), underlines that pesantren has contributed to fostering the understanding of moderate Islam (wasaṭīyah). Pesantren is different from Islamic educational institutions in other Muslim countries, such as Pakistan, Yemen, Afghanistan, etc. In those countries, many madrasahs (Islamic schools) become a place of a breeding ground for a radical understanding of Islam. The CSRC and PPIM UIN Jakarta’s study (2019) shows that pesantren has “social resilience” which can hinder them from the influence of radical ideology, although they still have some vulnerabilities. Pesantren resilience is resulted by their capacity in empowering their social capitals that have been existed in three social connectivity: social bonding, social bridging, and social linking.

Abstract

PurposeThis study aimed to better understand how the modernization of Islamic education has affected the patterns of learning Classical Literature (Kitab Kuning) in traditional pesantren in Sukabumi, West Java.MethodThis study used a qualitative method, by conducting in-depth interviews with 30 Kyais and pe-santren teachers in six pesantrens in Sukabumi. The six pesantrens represented old pesantren and were located in both the regency and city of Sukabumi.Results/findingsIn general, the modernization of Islamic education in pesantren in Sukabumi has not had much impact on the ways of learning Kitab Kuning which still apply classical methods. Exceptions oc-cur in a small number of pesantren which still all adhere to a pure Salafiyah system, such as Pe-santren An-Nidzom, Selabintana, and Pesantren Assalafiyah, Babakan, Tipar.ConclusionDespite minimal modernization of their education system, pure Salafiyah pesantrens have tried to apply limited modernization to the pattern of teaching of Kitab Kuning. Two new models have been adapted: First, the application of the Amtsilati method, a fast way of learning the Kitab Kuning discovered in 2002. Second, the application of an intensive learning strategy by placing selected students in intensive classes. Further studies need to be carried out to explore the effec-tiveness of the new method of learning Kitab Kuning in comparation to the classical one.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the ideological forms, tendencies, and media interests of Al Arabiya.net and the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) Arabic in their coverage of the 2021 Yemen crisis. The research analyzes news text discourse using Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis model, which comprises three dimensions: text analysis, discourse practice, and social practice. The data for this study comes from three Al Arabiya news articles and three IRNA Arabic news articles published between July and December 2021. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method and literature review. The findings reveal that the news texts from Al Arabiya.net and IRNA Arabic exhibit distinct ideological forms and biases. Regarding the 2021 Yemen crisis, the Al Arabiya.net texts demonstrate a negative bias towards the Houthi group while supporting the Yemeni government led by Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi. Conversely, the IRNA Arabic texts show a negative bias towards the United States, Israel, and the Saudi-led Arab coalition, which has been militarily involved in the Yemen conflict since 2015. The IRNA Arabic texts display sympathy towards the Houthi group and argue that the Arab coalition's actions in the Yemen conflict have worsened the crisis.
