Abstract

PurposeThis study aimed to better understand how the modernization of Islamic education has affected the patterns of learning Classical Literature (Kitab Kuning) in traditional pesantren in Sukabumi, West Java.MethodThis study used a qualitative method, by conducting in-depth interviews with 30 Kyais and pe-santren teachers in six pesantrens in Sukabumi. The six pesantrens represented old pesantren and were located in both the regency and city of Sukabumi.Results/findingsIn general, the modernization of Islamic education in pesantren in Sukabumi has not had much impact on the ways of learning Kitab Kuning which still apply classical methods. Exceptions oc-cur in a small number of pesantren which still all adhere to a pure Salafiyah system, such as Pe-santren An-Nidzom, Selabintana, and Pesantren Assalafiyah, Babakan, Tipar.ConclusionDespite minimal modernization of their education system, pure Salafiyah pesantrens have tried to apply limited modernization to the pattern of teaching of Kitab Kuning. Two new models have been adapted: First, the application of the Amtsilati method, a fast way of learning the Kitab Kuning discovered in 2002. Second, the application of an intensive learning strategy by placing selected students in intensive classes. Further studies need to be carried out to explore the effec-tiveness of the new method of learning Kitab Kuning in comparation to the classical one.

Abstract

Qasidah Nahdliyah Satu Abad NU (QNSANU) is a literary work composed by KH. Afifudin Muhajir to commemorate the centennial of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). According to Iser, no literary work holds complete meaning if it remains static as a document; it must be read and actively responded to by readers. Authors deliberately leave gaps or empty spaces within the text as a platform for readers to engage their imagination, leading to multiple interpretations that enrich perspectives and understanding of the literary work. This study aims to examine how these gaps are filled by respondents or readers, thereby revealing diverse interpretations. The research employs a qualitative method, with metaphor data collected through an experimental approach, involving fieldwork and interviews with 11 master's students of Arabic Language and Literature from the Faculty of Adab and Humanities, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Class of 2024. The study emphasizes that the second stanza of Qasidah Nahdliyah Satu Abad NU possesses significant symbolic power in establishing both emotional and intellectual connections with its readers. The findings support the hypothesis that the qasidah serves as an effective aesthetic medium for representing NU's historical, spiritual, and ideological values. Metaphors in the stanza, such as kaukabah (star) and al-barq fi al-zulma (lightning in the darkness), successfully create a framework for diverse interpretations depending on the readers' backgrounds. These interpretations demonstrate the qasidah's ability to bridge multiple perspectives, both among individuals directly connected to NU and those with no direct affiliation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings in the short film Inthiq Rasmiyyatan produced by the students of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor by applying Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory. The focus of the study is directed toward the shifts in word meanings from their denotative sense to connotative interpretations that emerge through myths namely, the culture, ideology, and traditions of the Islamic boarding school (pesantren). This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a note-taking technique centered on the film’s dialogues. The primary data include seven key lexical items: rasmiyyatan, qudam?’, mudabbir, t?j, qayyid, ???ir, and a proverb attributed to Imam al-Shafi‘i, which reflects the educational philosophy of the pesantren. The findings reveal that each term embodies three interrelated layers of meaning. Drawing on Barthes’ framework, the study uncovers that meaning is not confined to dictionary definitions but may shift contextually to represent particular values such as discipline, obedience, honor, and moral responsibility among santri (students). For example, rasmiyyatan, literally meaning “formal” or “official,” connotes linguistic discipline in using Arabic and English, while t?j (“crown”) serves as a metaphor for pride and institutional identity within the pesantren education system. At the level of myth, language functions as a representation of ideology, reinforcing the pesantren’s character, ethics, and value system. Ultimately, this study demonstrates that the film transcends mere communicative intent it portrays how language constructs social consciousness and spiritual values. Therefore, the research contributes to the advancement of linguistic and semiotic studies, while offering new insights into the role of language in shaping identity, ideology, and the educational culture of modern Islamic boarding schools
