Abstract. Misunderstandings about the functioning of guidance and counseling services (BK) in schools as well as negative perceptions of school counselors cause guidance and counseling programs in schools to be unable to run optimally so as to fail to achieve predetermined results. As a result the performance of school counselors is considered poor by the principal and fellow teachers. This article was created with the aim of providing an overview of the causes of misunderstandings that result in negative perceptions of school counselors and the role of principals in addressing them. This article is a theoretical study and analysis of the results of previously conducted studies. A number of studies prove that the failure of guidance and counseling programs as well as poor performance of school counselors occur due to the lack of understanding of the counselor's duties and functions and inadequate implementation of school management by the principal. The results of the study concluded that the principal as manager and school administrator can play an active role in the management of guidance and counseling actively in the way of: 1) Understanding the main tasks and functions of the school counselors appropriately; 2) Collaborate with counselors in implementing guidance and counseling programs in schools; 3) Ensure the ratio of school counselors and students is 1:150; and 4) Conduct professional development for school counselors continuously. The role of the principal in the implementation of management is expected to improve the performance of school counselors and eliminate negative concerns over the presence of school counselors in schools.
