Abstract

This study discusses the epistemology of hadith from the Shi'a perspective, which is a specific approach used by Shi'a scholars in understanding and assessing the quality of hadith. The Shi'a hadith epistemology takes into account the historical context and the groups involved in the transmission of hadith and pays special attention to the authority of the Imams of the ahl al-bayt in interpreting the hadith teachings. This study aims to conduct an in-depth exploration of the epistemology of hadith from the Shi'a perspective. This approach involves a review of relevant literature and research methodologies. It will also discuss the challenges and criticisms faced by the Shi'a perspective in hadith epistemology. The research method used is a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature and sources. The results of this study are expected to provide a better understanding of how the Shi'a view and apply hadith in the context of their lives and traditions. In addition, this research is also expected to provide new contributions and insights in the development of hadith science in general.

Abstract

Empiricism is a branch of Western epistemology that is based on experience and discourages reason. According to empiricism, the source of knowledge is experience or empirical. Reason is not a source of knowledge; instead, reason is tasked with processing knowledge gained from experience. The aim of this research is to find out hadiths about the life of the Prophet which can constitute epistemology as science. This research uses a descriptive method with a literature review. Thus, this research concludes that the application of Islamic epistemology based on the life of the Prophet is proven in the Muslim hadith no. index 2336 about the wrong story of the Prophet to date palm farmers. This hadith is a tribute to the Prophet because of his expertise and ability in the professional field. In other words, the Prophet's hadith shows that the only people who understand agricultural issues better are farmers. Judging from the asbab al-wurud hadith, the Prophet was born and raised on the barren Arabian Peninsula. Therefore, the Prophet only expressed his opinion without having experience in farming dates. From this experience of the Prophet's erroneous opinions, lessons can be made for farmers, as those who understand more about the world of Islamic boarding schools are the kyai and Islamic boarding school administrators.

Abstract

General Background: Islamic intellectual history in the Nusantara has developed through transregional scholarly networks linking local communities with global centers of learning, especially the Haramain. Specific Background: Shaykh Yasin Al-Fadani, a Minangkabau-born scholar based in Mecca and known as Musnid ad-Dunya, held a central role in hadith transmission and Islamic astronomy, connecting the Haramain and the Nusantara through his works and students. Knowledge Gap: While prior studies address his hadith and astronomical contributions, limited analysis applies Karl Mannheim’s sociology of knowledge to explain his role in Nusantara intellectual dynamics. Aims: This study investigates how his social position, intellectual networks, and writings sustained Islamic scholarly continuity between the two regions. Results: Through qualitative case study and content analysis, the findings show that he preserved sanad authority, established extensive teacher–student networks, and authored key works such as Al-Fawaid Al-Janiyyah and Al-Mukhtasar Al-Muhazzab, which remain central in pesantren education and responsive to colonial and modern contexts. Novelty: By employing Mannheim’s framework, this research situates his scholarship within its socio-historical setting and transregional interactions. Implications: The study clarifies Nusantara–Haramain scholarly connectivity and reaffirms the ongoing relevance of sanad-based learning in contemporary Islamic education. Highlights: A transregional teacher–student lineage linked Mecca with pesantren communities across Java, Sumatra, and Kalimantan. Sanad-centered scholarship functioned as a mechanism for preserving religious authority during colonial and modern transitions. Major writings on hadith and Islamic astronomy addressed both doctrinal continuity and practical communal needs.
