Abstract

Quality human recourse is the determinant factor for the improvement of coastal-border areas. The Indonesian government encourages the improvement of foreign since foreign language is indispensable for competing in the global economy. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy simultaneously holds English language training in tourism destinations in Indonesia, including the Temajuk Village that borders directly with Malaysia. This one group pretest-posttest design experimental study tested the effectiveness of a traditional yet powerful, storytelling, in improving the English speaking skill of the Tour guides in Temajuk Tourism Village. The study has proven that storytelling significantly improved participants’ English speaking skills with a significance value of 0.045 (< 0.05). In terms of aspects of speaking skills, it was found that participants’ Volume (0.038 < 0.05), Facial Expression (0.045 < 0.05), and Action-body Language (0.009 < 0.05) improved significantly. Meanwhile, storytelling had no significant effect of participants’ Eye contact (0.815 > 0.05) and Content of the story (0.552 > 0.05). This study pertains to showing precious insight into community-based engagement practice. It proffers that storytelling can support tour guides’ English speaking skills and potentially help the community’s economy as part of community empowerment.

Abstract

Community empowerment in the border area has attracted considerable attention, including in terms of English Language learning. This study is a smaller part of a bigger project carried out in Temajuk Village, West Kalimantan, Indonesia.  This study used unstructured interviews to explore what has neither been tested in the hypothesis nor questioned in the research problems. The unstructured interview has not really been put to use despite its ability in uncovering a wider range of topics of conversation. Thus this descriptive study seeks to examine participants’ thoughts after attending a six-meeting training of storytelling in English to tour guides in Temajuk Tourism Village. The findings revealed that participants appreciated the training given and are enthusiastic about attending more training. The pocketbook surprisingly is the most favorable way of teaching preferred by participants. This study also encourages the use of gradually increasing difficulty of method in teaching English for participants coming from different backgrounds of educations and ages. This study provides insights and input for future policies and programs for the empowerment of the border community.

Abstract

M-learning has gained remarkable popularity in language learning. Mobile-assisted language learning offers learning opportunities outside the classroom. This study is a smaller part of a bigger project. This study has strived to highlight the advantages of the use of a mobile-assisted language learning application named Busuu in supporting students’ listening practice. Participants involved in this study were 32 first-year college students who have used Busuu for two months. Students used Busuu for listening practice and regularly report their progress to the lecturers. The study revealed that Busuu widens vocabulary range, provides listening practices, has attractive and interactive features, and fosters learning autonomy. Students also wrote that the use of mobile applications is very useful, due to their practicality, portability, flexibility, and accessibility. In addition, it opens up learning opportunities and immediate feedback for learning. Thus, Busuu is promising to be used in listening classroom.

Abstract

Politeknik Negeri Sambas adalah sebuah perguruan tinggi yang sedang berkembang yang terletak di Kabupaten Sambas, perbatasan antara Malaysia dan Indonesia. Politeknik Negeri Sambas memiliki jumlah dosen sebanyak 86 orang dan kebanyakan di antara mereka masih memiliki kekurangan dalam kemampuan berbahasa Inggris. Oleh karena itu diperlukan sebuah usaha untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam berbahasa Inggris. Salah satu cara untuk meningkatkan hal tersebut adalah dengan menggunakan Need Analisis untuk mengetahui bagaimana mereka sekarang (Present Target Needs) dan apa yang ingin mereka inginkan dan kekurangan mereka dalam belajar bahasa Inggris (Target Needs). Metode dari penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan 26 responden yang diwakili oleh tiga Jurusan yaitu Manajemen Informatika, Teknik Mesin dan Agribisnis. Dari data yang telah ditemukan maka disimpulkan bahwa dosen Politeknik Negeri Sambas menyadari akan pentingnya bahasa Inggris untuk digunakan sebagai syarat untuk melanjutkan pendidikan yang lebih tinggi. Dosen Politeknik Negeri Sambas ingin belajar bahasa Inggris karena ingin menggunakannya pada dunia pendidikan Mereka ingin melanjutkan pendidikan yang lebih tinggi dan bisa bersosialisasi secara global. Mereka menyadari bahwa jika mereka tidak menguasai skill berbahasa Inggris maka mereka akan menghadapi kesulitan dalam karirnya dan mereka mempercayai itu akan memberi pengaruh buruk dalam dunia pendidikan sedangkan kemampuan yang ingin mereka fokuskan dalam belajar bahasa Inggris adalah speaking dengan cara belajar di dalam ruangan lebih dengan cara berpasangan atau grup dengan fasilitator dengan gaya guru mengajar sebagai fasilitator bukan sebagai guru tradisional yang memberikan kuliah saja.
