Abstract

This research aims the delusion within Alfred, the main character in Ruta Sepetys’ Salt to the Sea. The delusion within the main character has great impact toward the novel. Ritunanno and Bortolotti’s (2021) theory of delusion is meant to analyze the delusion within the main character.  This method is adequate for analyzing the delusion within the main character in Salt to the Sea novel. This research uses qualitative method. The data will be taken from dialogues between the main character with other characters and the author’s narrations. The delusion within the main characters is collected by identifying and classifying the dialogues into the beginning, the process, and the result of the delusion within the main character. The delusion is portrayed by Alfred which leads to the tragic impacts. The beginning of the delusion occurs in Alfred’s environments that depicts how his parents and friends treat him in certain ways he does not want to. While, the process of the delusion occurs when he’s on duty during the war. It is interpreted how he goes through such underestimation toward colleagues and strangers being rude to him. Eventually, the impacts make some significant changes toward Alfred’s character. The positive impacts are the remembrance of his mother and the details of the ship. And the negative impacts are the neglect on other people and his death. All in all, this research shows the worst that the delusion could create to Alfred is his death.

Abstract

The main factor causing inequality for women is patriarchy. As in many old-school traditions, patriarchy remains in marriage where wives are urged to bow down to their husbands and the husband is regarded as the ultimate authority of the household. This research investigates the narrative of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's iconic short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper". Descriptive qualitative research and textual analysis approach are used to complete this research analysis. Along with the depiction of radical feminism, this research aims to subvert patriarchal ideals. This is in keeping with the narrator’s husband John, who works as a physician, forbids her to do anything instead locking her in the ancestral halls. The reason of his attitude as if this is the only way to cure the female narrator’s depressing nervous trouble. She is often considered let the silly fancies run in her mind and lost control. In the nursery room she is locked up, she found an irritating painting on the yellow wallpaper. Yet, she later discovered there is a woman imprisoned in the painting who is always creeping. The findings show that the yellow wallpaper symbolizes the female narrator’s suffering as a captivated creature and pushed by the patriarchy control.

Abstract

This article examines the cultural construction of justice through a comparative literary analysis of two texts from different traditions: the Indonesian folktale The Legend of Toba and the contemporary American memoir A Lifetime of Injustice by Jessica Neyhouse. Using the methods of literary comparison and cultural hermeneutics, the study reveals how each narrative encodes justice in culturally specific ways—through cosmological punishment and ancestral norms in The Legend of Toba, and through socio-political critique and racial consciousness in A Lifetime of Injustice. Despite their differences, both texts emphasize universal moral themes such as betrayal, accountability, and the pursuit of justice. The findings support the argument that literature not only reflects cultural values but also facilitates dialogue between particular and universal ethical visions

Abstract

This research delves into the themes of friendship and loyalty within Alexandre Dumas’s The Three Musketeers through a nuanced qualitative literary analysis. By scrutinizing the narrative architecture, character arcs, and thematic motifs, the research seeks to illuminate how Dumas elevates friendship from mere personal affection to a noble moral ideal. The primary reference is the English translation by Pevear (2006), complemented by an array of scholarly discourse on Dumas’s oeuvre and theoretical perspectives on friendship. Employing three analytical approaches, namely, thematic analysis to uncover persistent values of loyalty, structural analysis to examine how the narrative structure underscores the importance of camaraderie, and character development analysis to trace the growth of pivotal figures, the research demonstrates that friendship in the novel is depicted as a virtue rooted in mutual respect, moral integrity, and self-sacrifice. Dumas masterfully employs this motif not only to propel the storyline but also to critique authority and extol ethical resistance. Ultimately, the research reveals friendship as a dynamic force with profound personal and political significance, elevating it to a moral and societal ideal

Abstract

This article examines the social and cultural aspects shown in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling. Beyond its fantasy narrative, the novel portrays real-world social issues such as family dynamics, bullying, personal identity, social class, and cultural prejudice within both the magical and non-magical worlds. Through a qualitative approach using library research, this study identifies how social environments, peer interactions, institutional influences, and cultural norms shape character development, particularly that of the protagonist, Harry Potter. The analysis highlights how the novel reflects British cultural heritage, including the class system, educational structures, and traditions, as well as issues of discrimination based on blood status. This study contributes to understanding how popular literature serves as a medium for representing and critiquing social and cultural realities.

Abstract

This research investigates the representation of family values in the Indonesian film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap (2022) and the Korean drama Reply 1988 (2015) through a comparative literature approach. Both films depict family as the core of identity, love, and conflict, yet reveal significant cultural differences. Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap portrays a patriarchal Batak family where traditional obligations and family honor create tension between generations, with emotions often concealed and revealed only in dramatic moments. In contrast, Reply 1988 illustrates urban Korean families characterized by open emotional expression, egalitarian gender roles, and strong neighborhood solidarity as an extension of family life. The study applies qualitative content analysis, identifying thematic patterns of family structure, emotional dynamics, and cultural expectations. Findings highlight both universal themes of familial love and the unique cultural nuances that shape family narratives in Indonesian and Korean contexts. This research contributes to comparative literature by demonstrating how film serves as a cultural text, offering insights into societal values and intercultural understanding

Abstract

This article explores the theme of oppression against women in Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story The Yellow Wallpaper. Through thematic analysis, this study examines how the mental breakdown of the main character reflects rigid gender roles and patriarchal norms that dominated American society in the 19th century. The story follows a woman undergoing a ‘rest cure,’ a treatment method that emphasises isolation and prohibits intellectual activity, which only exacerbates her mental condition. Gilman not only criticises medical practices but also the oppressive social structures and marriages that silence women's voices. Symbolism, particularly the yellow wallpaper, plays a crucial role in depicting the protagonist's entrapment and despair. Her mental decline is understood not merely as an illness but as a symbolic form of resistance against oppressive norms. This finding suggests that The Yellow Wallpaper functions not only as a psychological study but also as a powerful feminist statement on the importance of autonomy, self-expression, and a gender-sensitive approach to mental health.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery remains one of the most disturbing and widely discussed short stories in American literature. Its enduring appeal lies largely in the carefully crafted plot structure, which cleverly conceals the true nature of the small town’s annual ritual until the story’s climax. This article presents a close reading of the narrative using formalist and structuralist approaches, focusing on how tension and irony are built through narrative delay, symbolic cues, and a cyclical ritual structure. These narrative techniques not only generate emotional tension but also serve as critical tools used by Jackson to challenge themes of social conformity, the banality of evil, and culturally legitimized violence. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on literary analysis through close reading and interpretative strategies. The research begins with an intensive reading of The Lottery to identify narrative techniques and literary devices used. This is followed by textual analysis using formalist and structuralist criticism. The study also examines secondary sources from academic journals and literary theory. The final stage involves interpreting meaning to uncover the social, psychological, and ideological implications of the text. By emphasizing the ethical dimension of the plot’s architecture, this study argues that The Lottery goes beyond mere storytelling and functions as a sharp critique of unquestioned traditions, urging readers to confront the hidden violence within normalized communal practices.
