Abstract

Abstract

At present, disposable masks have become a necessity and habit for the general public. This causes an increase in the volume of single-use mask waste generation. If disposable mask waste is not managed properly and correctly it can harm living things such as fauna and contains micro plastics which have the potential to be a source of pollution in the environment. This study aims to analyze the potential impact of household-scale disposable mask waste pollution in Cinere District. The method used in this research is statistics and literature study. The results showed that the average use of disposable face masks in Cinere District was 2 pieces/day with a weight of 3.54 grams and it was estimated that the people of Cinere District produced 76,494 disposable masks waste/day with an extrapolation of the potential impact of micro plastic pollution reaching 67.31 billion/day which will be released into the environment. This will be a heavy burden on the environment, therefore good cooperation is needed between the community and the government in managing disposable mask waste on a household scale in order to reduce and prevent pollution of disposable mask waste in the environment.

Abstract

Peers advisory is important to help improving individual behavior, including waste-management and handling activities. The data analyzed in this study were derived from primary data collection on some populous provinces in Indonesia, along with waste-management problem. A survey has been conducted on more than 2,000 observations at individual level, gathered from 563 household to examine how social and education affect the probability of a person to follow correct waste-handling actions: put trash righteously. This study found that urban citizens in Indonesia are probably 1.7 times more likely to follow correct waste-handling actions, if they’re have been taught in environmental caring. This study also found that peers’ advice in terms of environmental caring will affect people 3.77 times more likely to put trash righteously. Overall, this study found that peer’s socialization environment is important in reshaping human’s behavior on handling wastes. In addition, good habits formed during childhood, and self-initiative behavior has not also been important enough to solve waste-handling problems.

Abstract

The Cakung River is a river located east of Jakarta and empties directly into the Cilincing estuary, on the coast of DKI Jakarta. The Cakung River crosses a densely populated area and becomes a waste disposal site for various types of industries, resulting in a decline in river water quality. The decline in the quality of the Cakung River will affect Jakarta’s coastal area which has a strategic ecological function. This study aims to analyze the water quality and water quality status of the Cakung River using the pollution index method. The results were also compared with measurements in 2021 and 2019. Laboratory analysis showed that the main pollutant parameters such as TSS, BOD, COD, and Faecal coliform exceeded the quality standards at all sampling points. The range of TSS values was 42-3450 mg/L, BOD 11.1-23.64 mg/L, COD 30-100 mg/L, Faecal coliform 5x106-9x106 MPN/100 mL. The pollution index calculation results show that the Cakung River is severely polluted with index value ranging from 13.92-14.86 and the level of severe pollution has also been going on since 2019. Therefore, serious efforts to control pollution in the Cakung River are needed.
