Abstract

Abstrak Norma Linguistik dalam Komunikasi Berbasis Pesan Pendek pada Kelas Menulis. Komunikasi Instant Messaging (Pesan Singkat) berbasis teks diperkaya oleh fitur linguistik, seperti pemendekan teks, gerak tubuh, isyarat intonasi, though-string, dan isyarat backchannel. Kemudian, penggunaan fitur linguistik ini membentuk strategi kesantunan yang sangat perlu untuk dijaga dalam rangka mencipakan komunikasi yang harmonis. Lebih jauh lagi, metode ini untuk mencapai norma linguistik. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan melakukan pendekatan kualitatif dimana subjeknya adalah mahasiswa jurusan bahasa Inggris dalam kelas menulis. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisis berdasarkan teori fitur linguidstik dalam Instant Messaging, strategi kesantunan, dan etika linguistik. Analisis penelitian ini didukung oleh teknik wawancara sebagai data triangulasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa siswa cenderung menggunakan penyingkatan teks yang mengarahkan mereka untuk menerapkan strategi bald-on-record dan menunjukan bahwa mereka cenderung menghasilkan tingkat kalimat beretika rendah dan ditandai sebagai ungkapan kurang sopan. Akhirnya, dari hasil penelitian ini di harapkan bahwa pengajaran norma linguistik dapat diberikan kepada para siswa.Kata kunci: fitur linguistik, komunikasi pesan singkat, norma linguistik  Abstract Linguistic Etiquette on Instant Messaging Text-Based Communication In Writing Class. Instant Messaging text-based communication is enriched by the linguistic features, such as textual shortening, gestures, itention cues, though-string, and backchannel cause. Then, the use of these linguistic features form the strategy of politeness which is very needed to be kept in order to create harmonious communication. Furthermore, it is the method to achieve the linguistic etiquette. This research is conducted by using qualitative approach in which the subjects are the English department students in writing class. Then the data are analyzed based on the theory of linguistic features in Instant Messaging, politeness strategies, and linguistic etiquette. The analysis is supported by interview method as the triangulation data. The result shows that students tend to use textual shortening which leads them to apply bald-on-record strategy and it indicates that they tend to produce low etiquette sentences level and marked as the impolite highlighed phrase. Finally, it is hoped that the teaching of linguistic etiquette can be given to the students.Keywords: linguistic features, instant messaging communication, linguistic etiquette

Abstract

The digital native generation emergent triggers the educational practitioner to develop a new way of approaching the teaching practice in the classroom. As it is claimed that this generation has a unique characteristics and way of learning. Therefore, this paper explore the experience of the first year student of English language and letters department in using technology. Students were asked about their access to, use of and preferences for a wide range of established and emerging technologies and technology based tools using a questioner developed to assess their level of digital nativity. The results show that many first year students are highly tech-savvy. However, each student’s experience on the use of technologies and tools (e.g. computers, mobile phones) show considerable variation. The findings are analyzed using the Prensky’s theory on the ‘Digital Natives’ and the implications for using technology to support teaching and learning in higher education. The reported data indicate that for a range of emerging technologies were used intensively by the students. Furthermore, the majority of the respondents also claimed that they used the tools and technology to support their study. However, it is inconclusive as how the student integrate the tools and technology in their study.

Abstract

Literacy workshop is important activity delivered in community to increase people’s competencies not only in reading and writing, but more importantly in building critical perspectives. However, the result of the literacy workshop needs to be examined, not only to find out the success indicator of the workshop, but also to understand the narration presented in young peoples‘ works. It is necessary to get the idea of what the young people’s concern and thought. This paper discusses the writings as the products of literacy workshop held at Trenggalek, East Java, which was attended by young people as participants. The workshop results in 12 writings, consisting of two short stories, and 10 essays.  The questions raised in this paper are; how is the discourse of daily life represented in the writings of the literacy workshop participants? What are the social and cultural factors affecting the writers in constructing the discourse? This paper argues that young people’s concern reflects the current social cultural issues that matters in our life. Literacy for young people is not merely giving the skill of reading and writing, but it is a meaning-making process, that enable them to construct the meaning of their everyday life.

Abstract

 This study aimed to explore the negotiation of Islam identity reflected from the hijabi basketball players' subjective experiences in Indonesia. A qualitative method was conducted from a subjectivist epistemological position. Six hijabi basketball players between the ages of 16 and 30 were recruited to participate in this study. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews. A thematic analysis was adopted to analyze the data since this analysis method allows the researchers to interpret based on the data's in-depth examination. The study results showed that the negotiation of Islam identity was found in the ways of modifying their sports attires and behaviors in and out of the basketball fields. All of the participants saw their modifications as positive actions to integrate the Islamic values in their lives.  Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui negosiasi identitas Muslim yang direfleksikan dari pengalaman para pemain bolabasket yang berhijab di Indonesia. Penelitian kualitatif ini menggunakan subjectivitas epistemologis. Enam pemain dari usia 16 hingga 30 tahun dipilih menjadi partisipan. Data dikumpulkan melalui interview semi struktural. Sedangkan analisa datanya merupakan analisa tematik karena dalam interpretasi data diperlukan pemeriksaan yang detail dan mendalam. Hasil analisa data menunjukkan bahwa negosiasi Identitas sebagai orang Islam dilakukan dengan cara memodifikasi kostum olahraga dan sikap mereka baik di dalam maupun di luar lapangan bolabasket. Mereka memandang penyesuaian tersebut sebagai tindakan yang positif untuk menerapkan nilai–nilai Islam di dalam kehidupan mereka.
