Abstract

Short stories as part of the literature play a significant role in portraying the human lifestyle, including the image of disabilities. Studying the portrayal of disabled people in literature becomes significant to consider the need to change the illustration of disabilities in fiction. There are four short stories selected in this study, namely “Cathedral” By Raymond Carver, “The Blind Man” by Guy de Maupassant, “The Blind Man” by Kate Chopin and “A Man Who Had No Eyes” by Benjamin MacKinlay Kantor. Applying disability theory proposed by Tobin Siebers, this textual analysis study found that the characters in the four stories are portrayed as weak, dependent, unproductive, and other negative prejudice. They receive this treatment due to the social misconception about disabilities.

Abstract

This study examines the personality structure of the character Elizabeth, who is the Queen of England in the film Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) through the theory of Sigmund Freud, as well as the psychosocial development of Erik Erikson's theory, and the defense mechanisms of Sigmund Freud's theory that she uses. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis, examining the elements of dialogue and character behavior in the film. Data for this study were collected by watching the film, noting relevant scenes, and analyzing them according to the theory used. The results of the study show that Elizabeth experiences internal conflict between her id, ego, and superego and this reflects how she develops as a national leader. Erikson's psychosocial stages such as Identity vs Role Confusion, Intimacy vs Isolation, and Generativity vs Stagnation, show Elizabeth's changes when dealing with matters related to politics and society. In addition, the defense mechanisms used by Elizabeth such as rationalization and sublimation play a positive role in maintaining her emotional stability, while regression and forgiveness lead to negative ones.

Abstract

This article explores how Rick Riordan applies the literary concept of pastiche and defamiliarization in his novel The Sword of Summer (2015). The study focuses on how elements of Norse mythology are blended with contemporary settings and characters to create a fresh and unfamiliar reading experience. Guided by Viktor Shklovsky’s theory of defamiliarization and Fredric Jameson’s idea of pastiche, the analysis reveals that the protagonist Magnus Chase and supporting character Samirah Al-Abbas are constructed through a fusion of ancient myth and modern identity. The appearance of mythological symbols such as the sword Sumarbrander, the fire giant Surt, and the reinterpretation of Valhalla as a high-tech hotel also represent a deliberate artistic choice that renews readers’ perceptions of traditional myth. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study concludes that Riordan’s work challenges conventional depictions of heroes and mythology by encouraging readers to see both ancient narratives and present-day realities in unfamiliar ways. This blend of nostalgia and innovation not only attracts contemporary readers but also delivers a unique aesthetic experience through literary defamiliarization (Jameson, 1992; Shklovsky, 2015).

Abstract

This study examines research trends on promoting mental health literacy in children’s literature throughbibliometric analysis. With growing recognition of children’s mental health as a critical issue, literature has emerged as a valuable tool to foster emotional resilience and well-being. This study aims to identify emerging themes and shifts in focus, ensuring future studies address the most pressing mental health concerns in children’s literature. Additionally, mapping these trends highlights under-researched areas, guiding targeted investigations to strengthen evidence-based interventions and support for children. This study employed data from Scopus and found seven eligible publications between 2015 and 2024. To comprehensively analyze the collected data, VOSviewer is applied to capture co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrences, and thematic clusters. The results highlight a rise in publications during the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting increased global attention to mental health. The United States leads research output, followed by China and the United Kingdom, though cross-institutional collaborations remain limited. Prominent themes include resilience, emotional intelligence, and the impact of bullying, with emerging topics like digital interventions and bibliotherapy. However, areas such as the experiences of foster children and those facing cyberbullying are underexplored. The study underscores the need for interdisciplinary approaches and international partnerships to address these gaps. Fragmented research themes highlight the importance of broader integration. By promoting emotional literacy and resilience, children’s literature holds significant potential to support mental health initiatives, offering valuable insights for future research and practical applications.
