Abstract

The most pavement type in Indonesia is flexible pavement, of which rutting as one of the pavement defect is caused by heavy load and high temperature. Rutting can cause the decrease of road service and followed by crack which leading to worse damage of pavement. The purpose of the study is to find out the performance of Stone Mastic Asphalt using asphalt cement pen 60 mixed with semi extraction of asbuton and the method of the research is laboratory experiments. The results showed that the addition of semi extraction asbuton significantly increases the resistance of the SMA mixtures to rutting, increasing modulus of asphalt mixtures and improve drain down and flushing. However the resistance of mixture to particle loose decreases even though it is still in the limit requirement and it tends to become less brittle. As the addition of semi extraction asbuton increases some Stone Mastic Asphalt performance, and decreases the others, so that the determination of semi extraction asbuton proportion has to be minimum but still meet the requirement of asphalt mixture, by carrying further research about fatigue resistance of Stone Mastic Asphalt Keywords : Stone Mastic Asphalt, rutting, asphalt cement pen 60, stiffness modulus, semi extraction Asbuton.

Abstract

One of the asbuton products that frequently used for hot mix asphalt is granular asbuton with maximum size of 2,36 mm. The amount of granular asbuton used in asphalt mix is approximately between 5% to 10% of aggregate by weight. The assumption used in mix design is bitumen from granular asbuton can be all removed from its mineral matter and become soft and blended with petroleum bitumen, so that it can partly substitute asphalt in mixture. In addition, another assumption is asbuton mineral can be uniformly mixed with aggregate. The fact that in the mixture, bitumen from asbut on can not remove from its mineral matter. As a consequence, in actual implementation, there is different volumetric calculation of mixture. Therefore, mix gradation correction is required as a result of a major difference in unit weight of asbuton and aggregate, and the size of asbuton and its mineral. Hot mix asphalt with granular asbuton has high stiffness, high resistance to deformation, however, it has low resistance to cohesion and stripping, shorter fatigue life, more sensitive to increasing of stress/strain, more brittle, compared with the mixture using petroleum bitumen 60 pen grade. Abstract

Shear strength between asphalt wearing course and layer beneath in pavement structure has an important role. Wearing course distress will occur due to unsatisfactory shear strength such as shoving, craks and REMOVAL of some wearing course. Moreover, adequate shear strength of asphalt mix layer on steel plate deck bridge is required as well. Laboratorydirect shear test was performed to find out the shear strength between asphalt mixes and various coated steel plates to protect against corrosion. Test result using direct shear principles showed that shear strength resulted from different coating on steel plates was not significant. Test result and its analysis indicated that shear strength between wearing course of asphalt mix layers and steel plates is less than shear strength between wearing course and binder course os asphalt mixes. Therefore, a great careful application (spreading and placement) of asphalt mix on steel plate deck bridge must be taken into account. Key words : Shear strength, steel plate, asphalt mixes, coated material, direct shear

Abstract

Indonesia has imported asphalt from other countries to meet the need for road construction and annual maintenance. Meanwhile in Buton Island, Southeast Sulawesi Province, there is natural asphalt known as asbuton that has been produced since 1926. Asbuton was produced in convensional granular asbuton with maximum granular size of 12.5 mm since 1987. In that case, pavement performance using convensional granular asbuton was unsatisfactory, its production was practically ceased in 1987. In the early 1990 granular asbuton has been reproduced in a smaller granular size, packed in the water proved plastic bagit was used either in the hot or cold asphalt mixes. This paper describes the laboratory research result on the properties of granular asbuton for hot mix in terms of the function of granular asbuton in the mixture. The failure of asphalt mix specimen with granular asbuton using Marshall test, the analysis of aggregate gradation resulted from granular asbuton addition in the mixture, material loosing by Cantabrian Method were also xamined. The experiments show that the bitumen in granular asbuton is difficult to separat e from its mineral so it cannot coat and bind the aggregates. The solubility experiment of granular asbuton using kerosene heated 90oC for one hour, only about 55% of bitumen was dissolved. Therefore, asbuton bitumen is functionally ineffective in asphalt mixture as petroleum bitumen. Consequently, it influences the performance of asphalt mix and pavements. It is proved that the bitumi nous mix failure using granular asbuton in marshall test was splitted into two parts. Considering the above result, asbuton extraction granular of asbuton should be developed and will be applied for achieving better performance of asphalt mix and for effective utilization of asbuton. Key Words : granular asbuton, bituminous mixes, Marshall test, extraction, stability

Abstract

Asphalt has a great influence on asphalt mixes, therefore determination of asphalt grade needs to be adopted to temperature where asphalat used. The asphalt type that commonly used in Indonesia is asphalt cement pen 60 besides some other types such as polymer asphalt or modified asphalt. The article describes asphalt cement pen 60 modified with pure asbuton bitumen (mineral content less than one percent), considering that asbuton as agreat Indonesia natural deposit. Research analysis shows that the addition of asbuton bitumen resulting in more harden asphalt and resistant to high temperature proved by the increase of softening point value, and more low susceptibility. Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) test was conducted with various asbuton bitumen contents. The range of suited asphalt temperatures was obtained for each asphalt mix containing asbuton bitumen, related to resistance of permanent deformation and fatigue cracks. Asphalt containing asbuton bitumen is more resistance of deformation and crack to higher temperature compare to cement asphalt without asbuton bitumen, so that asphalt containing asbuton bitument is suitable for tropical climate like Indonesia. Keywords : Asbuton Bitumen, penetration, so ftening point, Dynamic Shear Rheometer, deformation, cracks .

Abstract

Asbuton is Indonesian natural resource with a large amount of deposit, but has not been effectively utilized. On the other hand Indonesia imports asphalt about 650,000 tonnes per annum. Technology improvement to produce Asbuton with can be effectively used both in mixture and in asphalt content is immediately required. This article describes the properties of Asbut on resulted from extraction technology with has little mineral content ( < 1% ) and also describes properties of bituminous mixtures using bitumen Asbuton and asphalt cement pen grade 60 by Marshall method. The stiffness modulus properties of bituminous mixtures, resistance against deformation or accumulative strain due to repeated loading were examined in various temperatures. The test results show that bitumen of Asbuton extraction and asphalt mixes using bitumen Asbuton, generally has good performance compared to conventional asphalt cement especially for tropical area such as Indonesia.

Abstract

Indonesia only produces asphalt around 650,000 tonnes annually, whilst the need for the constructions and road maintenance is about 1, 2 m illion tones. To meet those needs, Indonesia has imported asphalt from several countries. On the other hand, Indonesia has large deposit of natural asphalt known as Asbuton approximately about 200- 600 million tones which has not been utilized efficiently. Asbuton contain around of 20 % bitu men and 80% mineral. Considering that Indonesia has large deposit of Asbuton and to meet the need of asphalt shortage, new Asbuton product called “ Asbuton Murni – Pure Asbuton “ has been developed. It is extraction of Lawele Asbuton and processed to be “pure – bitumen” containing of less than 1% mineral. “Asbuton Murni” is liquid substance like pen bitumen and it can be delivered in drums or bulk, so that is a high affectivity is asphalt hot mix and easily used as other asphalt products. “ Asbuton Murni“ product has a good properties as proved from test results such as penetration, softening point, solubility, ductility, loss on heating, high penetratio n index ( + 0. 144) compared with conventional asphalt cement (- 1,127) and perfectly suited for heavy traffic with high temperature like Indonesia. The result of bituminous mixes (hot mix) using “A sbuton Murni” showed superiority compared with hot mix using conventional asphalt cement pen grade 60. Another advantage of using Asbuton Murni in hot mix is high stiffness modulus for any temperature test, therefore, it has better spread loading ability from traffic to subgrade and better resistance to permanent deformation as seen in high dynamic stability or less deformation due torepeated loads. Layer thickness for overlay in asphalt hot mix for various design traffic loading is less compared with conventional asphalt pen grade 60, resulting in significant saving. The application in Asphalt Mixing Plant (AMP) is simple because of unrequired additional special equipment, is similar to other mixing process with conventional asphalt pen grade. In short, from the above test results of both bitumen (asphalt) and asphalt mixes, “Asbuton Murni” can be able to meet the need of aspha lt shortage nationwide with a better quality

Abstract

The evaluation of pavement strength has been conducted and developed for long. There are two different types of evaluation namely destructive and non destructive methods. The tools for non destructive techniques have rapidly developed such as Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), however, this equipment is very expensive so that big budget is required for it. Moreover, the number of road links served is long. Another simple equipment is Benkelman Beam (BB) which well known in Indonesia, cheap and more practical in use . This paper presents the relationship between the test results of the strength of the structural number of existing pavement structures in Central Java using FWD and BB obtaining from surface deflections and tangent of deflection bowl. The study reveals that a variety of relationships occurred so that careful consideration is needed in correlating the relationships of the strength of pavement structures based on FWD and BB.

Abstract

There are two main types of bitumen i.e. those which occur naturally and those which are by product of the fractional distillation of petroleum. One type of natural bitumen is natural rock asphalt. There is a large reserve of natural rock asphalt in Buton Island-South East Sulawesi Province, Indonesia ; containing a bitumen content of 5% to 30% with an average bitumen content of 20% and remainder of the material is solid mineral matter, usually limestone or sandstone. The natural rock asphalt is known as Asbuton abbreviation of Asphalt Batu Buton i.e. Rock asphalt from Buton Island. The size of deposit has been variously estimated at up to 200 million tonnes. The deposit is therefore an important national resource with the potential to improve the properties of petroleum bitumen to carry the current and ever increasing traffic and axle loads in the future, reduce need imported bitumen and generated export income. To get a better quality Asbuton product, research and development has been ongoing. Available refining process has been developed. The refining process reduces the mineral content to produce Refined Asphalt Buton that has a bitumen content around 60% and new process has been recently developed produce a "pure Refined Asphalt Buton" has bitumen content > 99%. These types process high consistency and homogeneity and allow a uniform high quality to be produced. The addition of Refined Asphalt Buton bitumen increases the "Softening Point" and lower the "Penetration" of petroleum bitumen 60/70 pe grade. The addition of 20% refined asphalt Buton and about 54% pure refined asphalt buton bitumen P40/60 and P60/80 increases the softening point frim 48,5oC to 55oC ; 58oC and 54oC respectively. The penetration decreases from 61 dmm to 46 dmm and 47 dmm respectively. Blends containing Refined Asphalt Buton are less temperature susceptible as indicated by increasing Penetration Index (PI) value. This will improve resistance of a mix to permanent deformation particularly in tropical climates as indicated from wheel tracking tetsand Unconfined Uniaxial loading test results. The addition of Refined Asbuton has a significant effect in improving the mix stiffness which will improve the load spreading in the mix stiffness by 1.2; 2.7; times for the mixes containing 20% and 54% Refined Asbuton in the blend binder. This is due to increase in containing 20% and 54% Refined Asbuton in the blend binder. This is due to increase in Softening Point and a reduction in Penetration. Increasing in the mix stiffness would be able to spread the traffic loads onto the under laying layers of the pavement over as wide an areas as possible. The latter would mean that the stresses and strains in the pavement would be kept to a minimum resulting in a longer life for the pavement.

Abstract

The application of concrete pavement in Indonesia started 1995, there was increase in its development but no significant, Rigid pavement type with commonly use in Indonesia is plain concrete pavement due to the simplicity in application and cheap, with typical slab thickness of 25 cm. The influence of the change composite reaction by approximately ± 25% will change the service life by ± 6%. From the analysis of slab thickness and concrete quality deficiencies, gave significant influence on pavement service life. The descrease of slab thickness by 25 mm of design thickness or the decrease of concrete quality by 20% of design quality will decrease half of pavement service life. Even though there is compensation by decreasing the payment on the contract unit price but economic analysis on disadvantages is required.
