Abstract

Indonesian trading development rapidly shows an improvement with neighbour countries such as Malaysia and Singapore. Even though the transportation infrastructures arround Malacca Straits are currently just provided by boats. For balancing the develpoment trading reasons, Indonesian Government concerns to facilitate the building of transportation infrastructures or a fix-link infrastructure, a crossing bridge between Sumatera island (Indonesia) and Malaysia. Malacca Strait Bridge (MSB) between Indonesia and Malaysia is a part of Trans Asia road link, has been planned since years ago. To support the current planning, the Research and Development Agency – Ministry of Public Works – Republic of Indonesia (Badan Penelitian dan Pengembangan, Kementerian Pekerjaan Umum, Indonesia) needs to make a reviewing on a pre-feasibility study (Pre FS) for MSB. Pre FS activity involved many disciplines of knowledge especially for road/corridor, transportation, bridge, geotechnical, sea shore, environment, and social-economic-culture-policy. Pre-FS results that break event point for Corridor I among Dumai-P.Rupat-P.Medang-Malaysia may be expected between 25 and 30 yeras based on Benefit Cost Ratio methode, using cable stayed and suspension bridges and girders. The longest span for cable stayed and suspension bridges are 2600 m and 1280 m respectively. The selected corridior must be intensively discussed about technology absorbed and safety factor, resources capability for maintenance, integration within toll road network, foundation technology in the sea, and users psychology and comfort. Consession for operator may apply for 30 to 40 years. Keywords: Pre-feasibility study, Strait crossing, Strait bridge, Strait tunnel, Malacca strait bridge, Benefit cost ratio (BCR)

Abstract

Performance of asphalt concrete largely depends on quality of aggregate, stiffness of bitumen and asphalt mixtures. This paper specifically discusses the effect of temperature and the loading time on mechanistic value of Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (ACWC). Accoding to several literatures, in most ways asphalt stiffness is influenced by the time of loading and temperature which can influence mechanistic value of ACWC. To evaluate the effect of temperature and loading time on stiffness of asphalt and aspha lt mixtures, Van Der Poel’s Model is simulated. To evaluate the effect of temperature and loading time on tensile strain of ACWC, Shell’s model is applied.. Based on the analysis result, it is found that the effect of temperature on stiffness of asphalt penetration grade 60 is very significant, especially at temperature of more than 25°C. To maintain asphalt stiffness of 5 Mpa with loading time of 0.011 second (speed, V=80 km/hour) is 29.5°C. The effect of temperature and loading time on the stiffness of asphalt and asphalt mixtures is the same, both are very sensitive to the temperature of more than 25°C. Referring to Asphalt stiffness with minimum 5 Mpa, stiffness of ACWC is approximately 2250 Mpa.. ACWC fatigue will be sharter when temperature is colder and loading time is longer. Key words : mechanistic value, asphalt concrete wearing course, temperature, time of loading.

Abstract

or servicing the passage of vehicles, on the top of sub-grade are consist of pavement, so that the receiving load can be distributed to the value that can be borne of that sub-grade. From efficiency point of view, pavement which are build on the top of subgrade, usually from the bottom to up are namely sub-base, base, and surfacing, with strength are higher to the top. Sometimes, according to design calculation, below the surfacing, there is only base or sub-base (plat form) only, then direct to sub-grade. Material for road pavement also varied, commonly from aggregate, bituminous, or cement concrete. This paper review the advantages and disadvantages the surfacing made from bituminous and concrete, with particular attention to cost, time, durability and strength, comfort and safety, construction nd equipment aspects, and environment impact. Then, the paper describes sinthesis and innovative which are available to reduce the disadvantages of each type of pavement. Keywords: bituminous pavement, concrete pavement, synthesis and innovative

Abstract

The biggest deposit of Asbuton (natural asphalt from Buton island) located in Lawele Region, it is called As buton Lawele, which has deposit about 100.000.000 tons. Compared to Asbuton Kabungka (the raw material of Granular Asbuton BGA which has met Special Specification of Hot Mix Asbuton). Asbuton Lawele relatively has higher bitumen content, higher light oil content, and higher bitumen penetration value. It has 30% bitumen content, 7% light oil content, and bitumen penetration value of 180 dmm. As Asbuton Lawele has special characteristic, there could be a special specification in order to use it for hot mix asphalt pavement. For that reason, based on the result of laboratory study, in this paper the Specification of Hot Mix Asbuton Lawele is proposed and with the reasons. Based on laboratory study, it is found that Hot Mix Asbuton Lawele hasrelatively similar characteristic with Hot Mix Asphalt Oil Pen 60/70, except the higher value of its Marshall Stability and Dynamic Stability. Hot Mix Asbuton Lawele has Marshal Stability value of 1030 kg, and Dynamic Stability of 3500 passing/mm. Whereas, Hot Mix Asphalt Pen 60/70 has Marshall Stability value of 930 kg, and Dynamic Stability of 1432 passing/mm. Keyword: Road pavement, Hot mix asphalt, Asbuton Lawele

Abstract

Road has a very strategic role in social, economy, culture and national integrity, however, in the time being (traffic load and environment) the pavement performance has been decreasing. To gain a pavement performance, which is suitable or better for the users’ demand, is very difficult to achieve. This is only one of the reasons of limited budget so the aging serv ice of the pavement is shorter than the planning, such as occurs on The East Sumatera Roads. Condition of that pavement is serious damage and needs improvement, moreover, there are some areas needed to be reconstructed. Meanwhile the available financial to support the construction in 2005 is only 10% from the estimating needed finance. This paper is discussing the road improvement planning strategy related to often-limited budget. Based on the analysis whenever the existing budget is very limited, it is better that the budget is not be allocated evenly for the long of existing road surface because the result will not be effective. To optimize the budget and fulfil the demand of road users’ a better pavement performance, improvement planning strategy for the whole road surfaces is done segmentally not distributing evenly. This segmentation way also including improvement suits to aging planning or ideally and for other parts are not planned optimally but still having strength structure for 1 to 2 years to fulfil road users’ demands. Nevertheless, to obtain pavement suitable to aging planning depends on the continuous maintenance (routine and period).

Abstract

Asphalt durability level has to be known early or before the asphalt is decided to be used for pavement. In principle, asphalt durability level can be known base on chemical composition. The asphalt that has more reactive component has lower durability level than the asphalt that has more unreactive component. To know asphalt durability level, the reactive component compare with the unreactive component and it is called durability index. On the other hand, SUPERPAVE has developed TFOT (Thin Film Oven Testing) and PAV (Pressure Agging Vessel) testing to simulate field condition of asphalt in pavement. By this test, asphalt durability can be predicted. This paper explains the relation of asphalt durability index base on asphalt chemical composition with asphalt durability base on TFOT and PAV testing. The results, there isn’t correlation between asphalt durability index with asphalt durability based on TOFT and PAV. Because of that, to predict durability of asphalt, it is better if use conditioning by TFOT and PAV as SHRP recommendation.

Abstract

Cold recycling is one of technology alternative which can be prefend in selecting the strategy alternative for road rehabilitation project. Learning about the development technology. we also learn about the weaknesses of it. The pavement assessment condition, which sustain heavy traffic laod in the road trial, has been identified. In order to evaluate the performance of recycling technology, laboratory testing for material properties, mixture as well as field observation have been conducted. The evaluatiins consist of material properties, mixture, construction and pavement performance since the opening traffic until the age of construction in approximately 2 years. The result of laboratory test shows that the mixture strength criteria meet the specification, whereas the field assessment based on functional condition and from structural pavement indicates that pavement performance decreases, this shown by occuring rutting in the some parts of the wheel track. Based from this result, it is predicted that there is a correlation between material, mixture and construction method and pavement service life. The construction method should be developed in the future to minimize early deterioration. This paper describes about the evaluation result for recycling technology with binder material of foam bitumen which have been used in road link with heavy traffic load Jatibarang - Palimanan, Panturan, West Java. Key word : cold mix, recycling, foam bitumen, RFB (Recycling by Foam Bitumen) , pavement performance.

Abstract

Nowadays, many types of asphalt have been used on road construction, either from domestic production or imported. Understanding of asphalt characteristics is required to determined the types of asphalt needed in accordance with its requirement. Beside penetration index, the adhesion, softening point, and maltene parameter will strongly influenced the asphalt performance on pavement mix. To fulfil the demanding quality of asphalt on road construction, the asphalt producers should have cooperation with many parties, such as additive suppliers, research and development institutions, or universities, and maintaining the ashalt quality up to project location. This paper describe more detail about asphalt characteristics, especially for penetration grade asphalt.
