Abstract

Pavement design is determine of the type and pavement construction thicknesse to accomodate traffic for along design life. Estimation of traffic is very importance to the pavement design result.. Lane width is one from several problems wich impluence to estimation of design traffic, and lane width of road in Indonesia was varies and very different with foreign. Lane width of road can affect to riding confort and for road user safety, so road user behaviour will different depend on lane width of road is used. This paper discusses correction factos to design traffic effect of lane width, especially for road with two lanes two way. Activities undetaken are included literaure review, canalization survey or vehicle wheel path on several road links with two lanes two way with different lane width and data analysis.Based on the analysis result, found that for road with two lane two way and lane width is less than minimum lane width of 3.5 metres, so wheel path of vehicle wich use wheel path on design lane is more increase. Thus, for estimation of traffic in design lane is required correction factor. Especially for roads with fairly heavy volume, regional corners, climbs, or descendants, then the amount of lane width correction factor (fw) should be based on the survey results directly in the field.. Keywords: lane width of road, wheel path, design traffic, correction factor, two lane two way undivided.

Abstract

Conformity between the quality of hot mix asphalt construction with quality result is very difficult to achieve the plan. There are several factors that can lead to differences, among others, is the effect of lack of precision sampling, testing and manufacturing process ofthe mixture and implementation of the field. Difference of diversity of the construction is still acceptable as long as it within tolerance as specified in the specification. Tolerance in the specification reflect that the quality of the product is still acceptable because it is technically still within the range required. This paper discusses the range limit of bitumen content which still meet the requirements based Superpave specifications for various types and gradations of hot asphalt mixture, either for Laston of Lataston. Activities undertaken are included literature review, testig of materials and some types of hot mix asphalt in the laboratory and data analysis that includes a descriptive analysis to properties of material and hot mix asphalt. Analysis shows that the range limit of bitumen for hot mix asphalt-based refers to the Superpave specification, especially for the type of mixture of bitumen mixture which limits the range to meet varied requirements and more narrower (< 0.3%). As for the mixture Lataston was still quite wide, namely >= 0.4%. Since the range limit of bitumen content for Laston narrow enough, so in the process of sampling, testing and manufacturing process of the mixture and implementation of field is required precision and high accuracy. In this case associated with implementing a well-trained and well and calibrated equipment Key word : the range of bitumen content, hot mix asphalt, Superpave, tolerance, Laston and Lataston

Abstract

Performance of asphalt concrete largely depends on quality of aggregate, stiffness of bitumen and asphalt mixtures. This paper specifically discusses the effect of temperature and the loading time on mechanistic value of Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (ACWC). Accoding to several literatures, in most ways asphalt stiffness is influenced by the time of loading and temperature which can influence mechanistic value of ACWC. To evaluate the effect of temperature and loading time on stiffness of asphalt and aspha lt mixtures, Van Der Poel’s Model is simulated. To evaluate the effect of temperature and loading time on tensile strain of ACWC, Shell’s model is applied.. Based on the analysis result, it is found that the effect of temperature on stiffness of asphalt penetration grade 60 is very significant, especially at temperature of more than 25°C. To maintain asphalt stiffness of 5 Mpa with loading time of 0.011 second (speed, V=80 km/hour) is 29.5°C. The effect of temperature and loading time on the stiffness of asphalt and asphalt mixtures is the same, both are very sensitive to the temperature of more than 25°C. Referring to Asphalt stiffness with minimum 5 Mpa, stiffness of ACWC is approximately 2250 Mpa.. ACWC fatigue will be sharter when temperature is colder and loading time is longer. Key words : mechanistic value, asphalt concrete wearing course, temperature, time of loading.

Abstract

Roads have a strategic role in social, economic, cultural area and National defence and security. However, to provide an adequate performance of pavements as expected by road users is hard to be achieved. One of the problems is caused by inaccurate use of base and sub-base materials. The paper discusses the use of aggregate base and sub-base that stabilized by cement. Based on analysis result, shown that the use of cement-treated base has several advantages, namely, high layer coefficient which can increase service life and more economical. Another advantage is to decrease the use of new aggregate and environmental impact.. Key words: base and sub-base, aggregate, cement stabilized, early damage, cement treated base

Abstract

In general, the pavement design methods used in Indonesia are adopted from pavement design methods of AASHTO or TRL, such as flexible pavement design with analysis component methods (structural number analysis). The effectiveness of design result depend upon the use of design input, completeness and accuracy of data, that is traffic data, environmental or regional factor and terminal serviceability index (Pt). This paper discusses the effect of inaccurately inputing data, which is used for the design result. Design result showed that incorrect determination decided of regional factor, terminal serviceability index (Pt) and the use of the equivalent standard axles of Austroad formula have a significant impact on it.

Abstract

From years to years the use of aggregate for maintenance and new pavement construction increases, while the resources of crushed stone decrease. Every year the need of aggregate to use for pavement construction in Central Kalimantan is increased. This research is based on the use of natural sand from Central Kalimantan for asphalt concrete wearing course (ACWC). To evaluate the performance of asphalt mixture in the laboratory, the test conducted in this research was Marshall Test. The result shown that the use of the natural sand up to 37% from the total weight of asphalt mixture, was still conform to the specification. Key words :natural sand, Central Kalimantan, asphalt concrete wearing course

Abstract

Recent years, there have been two issues of asphalt pavement in Indonesia i.e firstly, the supply of asphalt cannot meet national demand, so that it needs to be imported. Secondly, life design cannot be reached due to early demage resulted from inappropriate mixture used to accommodate traffic loads. To reduce imported asphalt and improve asphalt mixture performance is the use of asbuton known as Butas, mined in Buton where 677 million tonnes of natural asphalt deposit can be found which equivalent to 170 million tonnes of asphalt cement. Lawele has the most asbuton constituting 30% or 210 million tonnes but has not been utilized, on the other hand Kabungka with deposit of 60 million tonnes has been first developed. Asbuton Lawele contains 30% of bitumen, by considering the ratio of bitumen filler, the use of asphalt cement in mixture can be saved to one third resulting in saving of imported asphalt from 600.000 tonnes to 400.000 tonnes or saving of $ 100 million per year. Research result showed that hot mix asphalt added by asbuton has several advantages mainly in the increase of dynamic stability from 1457 passes/mm to 2743 passes/mm with 5% asbuton, 3283 passes/mm of 10% asbuton and resilient modulus from 2302 MPa without asbuton to 3480 MPa with 5% of as buton and 5163 MPa with 10% of asbuton. Moreone, from simulation calculation based on existing road condition and given resilient modulus of asphalt mix, as the thickness is less with the same design life and cumulative traffic load, the construction of asphalt layers with asbuton is 20% cheaper compared to asphalt layers without asbuton, although the price unit in ton is 3,7% higher for 5% of asbuton and 7,3% for 10% of asbut on, the price of asbuton is Rp. 750.000 perton. In order to have equivalent price between hot asphalt mix with asbuton and without asbuton, the price of asbuton should be Rp. 540.000 per ton in project location.

Abstract

Road has a very strategic role in social, economy, culture and national integrity, however, in the time being (traffic load and environment) the pavement performance has been decreasing. To gain a pavement performance, which is suitable or better for the users’ demand, is very difficult to achieve. This is only one of the reasons of limited budget so the aging serv ice of the pavement is shorter than the planning, such as occurs on The East Sumatera Roads. Condition of that pavement is serious damage and needs improvement, moreover, there are some areas needed to be reconstructed. Meanwhile the available financial to support the construction in 2005 is only 10% from the estimating needed finance. This paper is discussing the road improvement planning strategy related to often-limited budget. Based on the analysis whenever the existing budget is very limited, it is better that the budget is not be allocated evenly for the long of existing road surface because the result will not be effective. To optimize the budget and fulfil the demand of road users’ a better pavement performance, improvement planning strategy for the whole road surfaces is done segmentally not distributing evenly. This segmentation way also including improvement suits to aging planning or ideally and for other parts are not planned optimally but still having strength structure for 1 to 2 years to fulfil road users’ demands. Nevertheless, to obtain pavement suitable to aging planning depends on the continuous maintenance (routine and period).

Abstract

Flexible pavement defect which is frequently occurred in some regions that have high temperature and heavy loaded traffic is called plastic deformation. There are two factors contributed significantly to plastic deformation in asphalt mixture, they are volumetric of mixture and the use of grade asphalt. Problem in volumetric of mixture can be overcome by choosing appropriate gradation of aggregate that have sufficient void to accommodate asphalt under densification by traffic. To solve the above problem, research on the selection of aggregate gradation as an alternative to anticipate plastic deformation in laboratory scale has been conducted. The result indicated that properties of asphalt mixtures with aggregate gradation cut across Fuller Curve (below restriction zone) is not sensitive to plastic deformation.
