Abstract

Harajuku street fashion is a popular street fashion among youngster.This fashion's popularity is very high, not only in Japan, but almost in around the world. Harajuku street fashion has many various types of styles, such as visual kei, decora, Ura-Harajuku, lolita, Mori kei, and fairy kei.Each of these styles has different meaning also have different reasons to the one who wear it. One of reasons the fans of this fashion in Japan is they wear it as a form of rebellion.  This research aims to describes the acceptance of the members of the Harajuku Street Surabaya community towards harajuku street fashion.This research is conducted by using qualitative research method through case study approach also used an interview method as a data collecting methods. This research used Stuart Hall's reception theory (encoding-decoding) to find the acceptance positions conducted by informants. The results obtained there are two positions which occupied by informants, dominant-hegemonic and negotiated. The informants whom in dominant-hegemonic position, approve the messages brought by the encoder (harajuku street fashion) and reinterpret the messages according to the encoding rules. While the informants who are in a negotiated position accept and understand the messages, but they have exceptions and make their own rules.
