Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of agricultural modernization on the farming system of Dayak Kanayatn in Samalantan Village, Samalantan Subdistrict, Bengkayang Region. It used a qualitative approach using a descriptive design. A modernization theory expressed by W.W. Rostow was used as atheoretical basis, describing social changes in five-stage development. The datawere gathered through primary and secondary sources. The research illustrated the farming pattern of Dayak Kanayatn, the form of changes, and the effects caused by agricultural modernization. The primary data were obtained from in-depth interviews with a participant. He is a native of Dayak Kanayatn, working as a farmer. Observations were also conducted to better understand the farming practices in the area. Following that, secondary sources were traced through literature reviews, official documents, and field notes that were relevant to the research topic. Results indicated that agricultural modernization significantly affected the farming system of the Dayak Kanayatn people in Samalantan Village. The positive effect was a productivity increase with the use of agricultural technology and efficient farming practices. In addition, it contributed to the people's welfare improvement and sustainable economic and developmental growth. However, this modernization also brought some negative effects, such as sociocultural changes among people in Dayak Kanayatn. People might also be facing the threat of losing local wisdom and local rice seeds in Dayak Kanayatn. The results of this study are expected to provide a better understanding of social change and the impact of agricultural modernization on the Kanayatn Dayak community, as well as provide relevant recommendations for sustainable agricultural development in this region.

Abstract

Rangrang cloth is a local fabric that is produced according to the traditional knowledge of the people of Nusa Penida Island. This traditional knowledge has been transmitted through generations by virtue of a process of inheritance. The weaving patterns of Rangrang cloth are imbued with the rich cultural narratives of the island's inhabitants, offering a subtle reflection of the community's way of life. However, the practice of weaving Rangrang cloth is gradually diminishing. This phenomenon is influenced by a variety of factors, including changes in the Indonesian textile market and the rapid development of tourism in Nusa Penida since 2020. As a result, it compels weavers to implement various modifications as a means of adapting to the livelihood system that has been passed down through family inheritance. The present study yielded various forms of change. To ensure the accuracy of the data collected, this research process will employ qualitative research methods, with a particular focus on direct observation in Pejukutan village and Tanglad village. The purposive sampling method was then employed to augment the data presented in the article's narrative which was taken from two families who are active as weavers. This will facilitate the subsequent data analysis and reduction process. This article presents a concise ethnographic account of the life experiences of two weaver families residing on the island of Nusa Penida.
