Abstract

This study aimed to find out the implementation of Contextual Teaching and learning (CTL) in learning English for Maritime at Barombong Maritime Polytechnic. The author used descriptive research by applying a qualitative approach. The source of data was taken from observation, recording, and interview. The data was analyzed by using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman and Saldana, namely data collection, data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The result of this study concluded that the lecturer applied the CTL approach through main steps, namely preparing the material, showing the topic of learning, explaining the topic, and asking some questions. The lecturer developed students’ mind through working, finding and constructing knowledge and skills; conducted inquiry activity for all topics; developed the questioning attitude of students; created learning community (learn in group); presented “model” as learning role; conducted reflection in the end of meeting; and conducted authentic assessment in different ways. The lecturer also encouraged and motivated students by giving good feedback to students and connecting the topic of learning to real life.

Abstract

An electric motor is an electrical machine device that uses electromagnetic principles to convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. This mechanical energy is used as a driving force in the auxiliary mecchinery on board. There are many causes of damage to electric motors and the impact on the operating system can be disrupted. Some of the causes of damage to electric motors are heat, dirt, humidity, vibration and electricity quality. Other causes are usually poor maintenance and less than optimal cleaning. The aim of this research is to find out the causes of damage to electric motors on ships and to find out how to prevent damage to electric motors. Data collection methods used field methods, literature and interviews using descriptive qualitative data analysis techniques and obtained results on factors that caused damage to electric motors on MT ships. Transko Arafura, Factors that cause damage to electric motors on MT ships. Transko Arafura, namely vibrations in the electric motor due to damage to the worn ball bearing and shaft so that the shaft is not balanced. Prevents damage to the electric motor on the MT ship. Transko Arafura is by replacing the ball bearing with a new one and refacing the shaft by turning.

Abstract

Language-related questions in legal settings require an analysis that connects linguistic form with social context and institutional meaning. This conceptual study examines the interconnections among general linguistics, sociolinguistics, and forensic linguistics and explains their relevance to legal analysis. It employs a qualitative descriptive design and a literature review of books, journal articles, and other academic sources concerning the three fields. The sources are synthesized conceptually to identify their principal objects of analysis, areas of contribution, and relationships within legal contexts. The review identifies four connected themes. First, linguistics provides analytical tools for examining language structure, meaning, and use. Second, sociolinguistics explains how identity, social relationships, language variation, power, and communicative context influence language choices. Third, forensic linguistics applies these insights to legal texts, disputed authorship, recorded interaction, and the interpretation of potentially ambiguous or harmful expressions. Fourth, sociolinguistic context is necessary to reduce decontextualized interpretations of linguistic evidence. The analysis indicates that linguistic evidence is most informative when structural features are considered together with speaker relationships, communicative circumstances, and institutional norms. Nevertheless, linguistic analysis should support rather than replace broader legal evaluation because language interpretation is context-dependent and may involve uncertainty. The study offers a concise conceptual framework for understanding the complementary roles of the three fields in legal settings

Abstract

This research examines the English language competencies required by industry stakeholders in the Maritime Transportation Management sector. A mixed-methods approach with a convergent design was employed, integrating quantitative and qualitative data to obtain a comprehensive understanding of industry needs. Data were collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, involving 14 respondents, comprising maritime industry practitioners and representatives of educational institutions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis through methodological triangulation. The findings indicate that speaking and listening skills are the primary competencies required in Maritime English, particularly for operational communication and workplace coordination. In addition, reading and writing skills are also considered essential for understanding and producing technical documents and professional correspondence. Mastery of maritime terminology and contextual translation skills is regarded as an important supporting competency, ensuring information accuracy and preventing miscommunication in professional settings. Therefore, a reorientation of the Maritime English syllabus toward a more contextual, applied, and professionally competency-based approach is necessary to enhance the readiness of Maritime Transportation Management graduates to meet the demands of the global maritime industry.

Abstract

This research was conducted to examine the significance of implementing the Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model and its effects on students’ English for Maritime learning at the Indonesian Maritime Polytechnic. The study employed a descriptive research design, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. The collected data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s interactive analysis model, which consists of data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results revealed that the implementation of the CTL model significantly influenced students’ learning motivation, participation, and comprehension of English for Maritime. The approach encouraged students to become more active, motivated, and collaborative by connecting classroom learning materials with real-world maritime contexts. Furthermore, the model enhanced students’ critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and reflective learning practices, enabling them to apply knowledge actively rather than merely memorize concepts. The implementation of CTL also helped reduce students’ learning anxiety and improved their retention of maritime-related terminology.
