Abstract

Water pollution from waste, particularly from the healthcare sector, is a serious problem in urban areas such as Surabaya. Liquid waste that is not properly managed can pollute the environment and threaten public health. To address this problem, the city government of Surabaya has implemented an electronic reporting system (E-Simpel). This study aims to determine the level of compliance, especially by health facilities, in reporting environmental management efforts, one of which is water pollution control. The method used is a descriptive quantitative analysis to see the compliance of the implementation of liquid waste management in health facilities in Surabaya with the applicable laws and regulations. The focus of the research is on the compliance of health facilities in reporting waste quality data through the E-Simple system. The results of the study show that there is a difference in the average score of water pollution control compliance of health facilities in Surabaya, with the average score of air pollution control compliance being higher in 2024 than in 2023.

Abstract

Due to continuous business expansion, Surabaya has serious environmental management problems. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how well business actors comply with the guidelines in the Environmental Management Efforts-Environmental Monitoring Efforts (UKL-UPL) and Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL) papers. Surveys, interviews and document analysis are some of the data collection methods used in this descriptive-comparative study design. According to the results of the study, the compliance of corporate activities increased in 2024, indicating that the monitoring efforts were successful. In order to improve corporate compliance with environmental management, this study suggests the expansion of monitoring capacity, training and the integration of information technology in monitoring. It is believed that these results would serve as a basis for more flexible and successful regulations to maintain the environmental quality of Surabaya.

Abstract

The rapid growth of the laundry industry in Indonesia, recorded in 2021 there were more than 30,000 laundries spread throughout Indonesia with a business growth of 15-20% per year (Bisnis et al, 2021) the increased laundry industry means more wastewater will be produced. If it is not treated properly before being discharged into water bodies, it can pollute water bodies and the ecosystems inside. One of the processing methods is the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) which is a biological method by utilizing microorganisms to form a biofilms and stick to carrier media and then move dynamically so that contact occurs between waste and microorganisms effectively which can degrade pollutants in laundry waste, the more bacteria added and the longer the contact time, the more pollutants will be degraded. In this study, variations in the addition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria were carried out by 0%, 3%, 5%, 7% and 10% with contact times of 7 hours, 14 hours, 21 hours and 28 hours to degrade COD, phosphate and detergent parameters in laundry wastewater. The greatest removal efficiency was obtained at the addition of 10% bacteria and a contact time of 28 hours, namely 84% COD, 96% detergent and 74% phosphate. The number of colonies in the biofilm with the addition of 0% was 101,000 CFU/mL, 3% was 110,000 CFU/mL, 5% was 184,000 CFU/mL, 7% was 234,000 CFU/mL and 10% was 338,000 CFU/mL.

Abstract

Hospitals contain wastewater containing toxic chemicals and radioactive substances. Hospital waste produces liquid waste that is processed physically, chemically, and biologically using IPAL. The purpose of this study was to analyze the efficiency of pollutant removal from hospital liquid waste at the Wastewater Treatment Plant through document reporting at the Environmental Service of Gresik Regency. This study was conducted using a quantitative method with descriptive analysis to analyze the efficiency of the Hospital X IPAL system, through wastewater quality data at the inlet and outlet of wastewater treatment. The average TSS efficiency results were 88.15%, BOD 84.13%, COD 81.62%, Ammonia (NH3-N) 69.82%, Oil and Fat 82.93%, and Total Coliform 75.97%. The performance of the IPAL unit is said to be good where the Hospital X IPAL is effective in processing liquid waste because it can remove pollutant levels and achieve quality standards according to regulations in the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 68 of 2016 concerning Domestic Wastewater.

Abstract

Environmental monitoring and complaint systems are essential components in the protection and management of the environment. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of monitoring mechanisms and community-based complaint systems regarding environmental violations in Indonesia. A qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach was employed through literature review, regulatory analysis, and case studies in several areas of Sidoarjo. Based on the analysis of community complaints data from 2024 and 2025, industrial activities continue to pose serious environmental problems. In 2024, manufacturing industries dominated the complaints, primarily related to air and water pollution, ineffective waste management, and inadequate equipment usage. These issues directly affected nearby communities, causing noise and pollution that reached residential areas. Meanwhile, in 2025, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were identified as the main contributors to pollution due to the lack or suboptimal operation of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and air emission filters. Insufficient public outreach and knowledge regarding waste management also led to indiscriminate waste disposal into surrounding waterways. Overall, the most common violations by both industry types were related to air and water pollution regulations.
