Abstract

Concept of discourse involves three dimensions that are as language use, communication of beliefs (human cognition), and interaction in social situation. As a language use, discourse consists of two elements: cohesion and coherence. Discourse is divided into spoken and written discourse. Written discourse such as newspaper is very familiar today. One of the famous newspapers in Indonesia is The Jakarta Post. The most essential article in a newspaper is its editorial. Therefore, the research has been intended to find cohesion and coherence devices of the editorials in The Jakarta Post. In this research, substantive data were texts consisting of cohesion and coherence devices. The sources were editorials in The Jakarta Post May 2011 edition that consisted of 28 editorial articles. The data was analyzed using Identity Method. Results of the analysis showed that editorials in The Jakarta Post May 2011 contain all kinds of cohesion and coherence devices. The editorials contain grammatical cohesion (reference, ellipsis, substitution, conjunction) and lexical cohesion (reiteration and collocation). Coherence devices (repetition, personal reference, transition) are also contained in the data.

Abstract

Perceptive verbs have important function, especially in Cognitive Linguistics perspective, because these verbs are directly related to real experience. Cognitive linguistics focuses on the study of the relationship between language, mind, and socio-physical experience. Thus, this paper discusses how the lexical-semantic characteristics particularly the dynamicity or aktionsarten of the verb look. The verb look itself consists of agentive and perceptive verb class. The dynamicity of agentive and the perceptive verb look were analyzed using the distributional method combined with several techniques. Most of the verb look constructions appear as phrasal verbs. At least, there are 17 phrasal verbs with look as the root and the constructions consist of at least 20 different meanings. The dynamicity test is also applicated for the phrasal verbs. The results of the research show unique lexical characteristics of the perceptive verb look and it influences the meaning as well as the construction of the verb. The relationship between lexical characteristic with its construction shows the schema of cognition processing language.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the textual aspects in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) Norman Fairclough model of CNN news discourse about Uyghur issue. When this research is conducted, there are only at least five articles specifically discussing Uyghur issue that are 29th December 2011, 29th February 2012, 29th February 2012, 30th October 2013, and 5th September 2014 publications. The research focuses on analyzing the text representation and the relation between participants in the discourse. Objectives of the paper are: 1) to analyze the text representation of news in the news channel of CNN related to the Uyghur case, and 2) to analyze the relation between participants in the news channel of CNN related to the Uyghur case. The subject of this paper is Uyghur issue as reflected in the news articles of CNN International. The paper applies qualitative descriptive method. As a consequence: CNN often put formality features and a vague vocabulary to block and obscure the negative value from the readers to China. The relation here is presented by CNN to China rather than CNN to Uyghur. It is reflected by the power of the status of China.

Abstract

The integration of AI in EFL is increasingly vital to meet the demands of digital content creation, where English serves as a global medium for audience engagement. This study aims to investigate how students view the usefulness of an AI-based English e-module in improving their abilities and involvement in the production of digital content. An explanatory sequential mixed-method was used in this study. The data were gathered from 44 students of communication science study program at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan. Quantitative data were collected via a structured questionnaire grounded in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and qualitative data were gathered through structured interviews with six purposively chosen participants. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analyses. Results revealed strong positive perceptions: the AI feature usefulness item recorded M = 3.98, the comparative effectiveness over conventional methods item yielded M = 3.89, and overall satisfaction achieved M = 3.91. Thematic analysis confirmed the value of real-time chatbot feedback and automated corrections in enhancing scriptwriting and confidence, though device incompatibilities and navigation issues emerged as barriers. These results suggest that in order to acquire real digital communication abilities, educators should incorporate AI-driven e-modules into task-based EFL curricula. Additionally, system design should give priority to multilingual support and cross-device optimization in order to guarantee equitable access.

Abstract

This study investigates how cohesion is realized in English project videos produced by communication studies students within an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) context. While cohesion has traditionally been examined as a structural feature of written discourse, limited attention has been given to its role in spoken and multimodal communication. Adopting a qualitative discourse-analytic approach grounded in Halliday and Hasan’s framework, this study analyzes 13 student-generated self-introduction videos to identify patterns of grammatical and lexical cohesion and their functional roles in meaning-making. The analysis identified 90 cohesive instances across five dominant categories: personal reference, conjunction, lexical repetition, demonstrative reference, and collocation. The findings reveal that personal reference serves as the primary organizing mechanism, supporting identity construction and audience alignment, while lexical repetition functions as a strategic resource for thematic continuity. Conjunctions provide minimalist yet effective logical structuring, and demonstrative references frequently operate across both verbal (spoken language) and visual (on-screen gesture and imagery) channels, indicating the presence of multimodal cohesion. These patterns suggest that students employ cohesion not merely as a structural linguistic system but as an adaptive communicative strategy shaped by real-time production demands and digital discourse contexts. Based on this limited dataset, this study offers a preliminary contribution toward reframing cohesion as a functional, strategic, and multimodal resource rather than a purely structural feature, warranting further investigation with larger corpora. Pedagogically, the findings highlight the importance of integrating discourse-based and multimodal approaches in ESP instruction to support students’ communicative competence in digital environments.

Abstract

The rapid growth of Indonesia’s digital economy has increased the importance of English proficiency for digital content creators. However, many digital content creators still lack the specific language skills required for global communication in this field. This study aims to identify the English language needs of digital content creators and to inform the development of an AI-based English module. A mixed-method design was employed, involving a questionnaire completed by 69 undergraduate students and interview with one English lecturer at the Collage of Multimedia (MMTC), Yogyakarta. The findings indicate that students perceive their English proficiency as moderate, with significant needs in productive skills, particularly pronunciation, speaking, and grammar for digital content task such as scripting and captioning. Students also demonstrate positive attitudes toward AI-assisted learning, especially for feedback and personalized practice, although concerns about over-reliance and ethical use remain. These results highlight the importance of integrating AI tools with authentic content creation tasks while maintaining pedagogical guidance and ethical awareness.
